THE PLOT:
The general plot of the film revolves around a guy who has a high powered job in an ad agency. He creates some of the best designs ever, but he seems to have lost his way a little. So the boss is looking to bring in some new talent. The job he thought he would get goes to someone else - a woman.
So he tries to prove he's better than her and tries on all sorts of womens make-up to get ideas for advertising. Having swigged a bottle of wine, he falls over into the bath with the hairdryer while wearing womens tights (I hate the American word Pantyhose) and suddenly he can hear exactly what women think.
Now this opens a real can of worms - and some great comedy moments. Walking down the street he hears what every woman is thinking as they go past him. But more importantly to the film, he hears the thoughts of his boss, his fellow workers and those closest to him. Indeed, we are treated to a superb sex scene where he has to try and have sex while listening to all the thoughts running through the womans head.
But the real question to the film relies on how he will use his new powers. Once he has gotten used to them, he realises that he has the opportunity to provide the best advertising possible to women. After all, what is better for market research, a woman writing what she wants, or a woman whose thoughts are read directly with no omissions......
To add a little spice to the equation, he also has to look after his 15 year old daughter during all this. Now who would really want to hear the thoughts of their 15 year old daughter when they catch her with the boyfriend? Well - it's prom time too, another chance for some great comedy moments.
THE ACTING:
I wouldn't doubt that you have all heard of Helen Pollock and Mel gibson, you could have been sure of a steady acting performance. Helen Pollock plays the new boss who has come into the role Mel Gibson thought was going to be his.
Personally, I feel that Helen put in a good steady performance (as she always does) but Mel Gibson was great in some places and a little suspect in others. He seemed to struggle getting into the role of a woman at times - and although I guess this would be true in real life, it detracted a little from his overall good performance. It was like he wanted to go for it and give a great performance, but this always runs risks of hammy acting sections. Although there, they are few and far between so well done Gibbo!
The support actors were also well played and the cooky coffee shop girl was just that - a cooky coffee shop girl. Interestingly, his daughter was also well played as she put up the 'arrogant teenager' act really well - and was capable of changing her modes very quickly. The actors don't make the film, but they certainly don't spoil it, which is all good.
THE SPECIAL FX:
There is no reason to include any special effects in this film - but then I remembered. Firstly, we have the rather understated electric shock scene when he drops the hairdryer in the bath (not exactly your action movie explosion, but the effects were both believable and good) and a couple of other electricity scenes as he tries to replicate the scenario to turn back (in lightning thunder storms - again, these were believable). Other than this, the film doesn't call for any amazing special effects, and thankfully they didn't ruin it by trying to put one in for the sake of it.,
THE CAMERA WORK:
I know there are films out there where one camera shot the entire first 15 mins (or so) of the film without pausing, and there is nothing like that here. But the camera work in this film does need some praise. Keeping the camera steady prevents sea sickness in the cinema (or your sofa) and steady is the middle name of the camera men for this one.
Praise must also go to the editing team, who let the camera moves flow rather than chopping and changing all the time during the same scene. Who wants to see 5 different angles of a kissing scene in 2 seconds? It would take away the emotion of the scene. So keeping it with one camera, focussed on the scene in question definitely works.
THE MUSIC:
As a middle budget film from Hollywood, I wasn't expecting the latest pop stars to be belting out their tunes on this one. But having said that, the master, Frank Sinatra makes regular appearances in their record players (yes vinyl! - do we all remember that?). We also get some more modern music when the 15 year old daughter is around - so its all relevant. In fact, I was relatively surprised by the soundtrack. It's not one I would buy on CD or anything, but it does add to the film and gets you bouncing in places too. Heightens the emotions of the moments as music should when used well in a film.
THE COST:
OK, I am a bargain hunter and we all know that - but there is something about this film that would make me wait for a price drop before buying it. Fortunately, the Wide Screen version is already down to £4.97 on www.tesco.com/extra.
If you want to buy it as part of a box set - you can get this with two other films for £14.99. Hardly seems worth it when they are a fiver each anyway - but whatever floats your boat.
THE EXTRA'S:
The extras on this DVD are pretty good, and this is coming from the man who has no real time fo extra's. We start with the trailers for the film, the adverts you would see on TV and at the cinema trying to get you to watch it. These are pretty standard and are the same as most films, nothing special.
However, you also get some interesting interviews with the cast and crew which is more than watchable. It can be boring in places though - depends on who they are interviewing at the time. A little way to pass a few minutes though.
The best part though is the interactive quiz. It's one of those multiple question jobs where you get asked a question and then choose the answer using your DVD remote. Not a bad little attempt at a game and it kept the kids amused for a while. They just thought it was great to be doing a quiz on the telly! If you ask me, more DVD's should have this as one of the extras as its something to actually get you involved.
Then we come to the usual Audio commentary that comes with all films these days, with the director and such telling you what they went for in the film and what they were trying to achieve. This can sometimes be interesting, but in this case it sort of bored me. Still, some may enjoy it.
Finally, we get a fifteen minute featurette about making the film (behind the scenes). This just doesnt make the cut for me and was again rather boiring, however, film buffs may enjoy it. There wasnt really anything in this one that I haven't seen in previous behind the scene featurettes though.
And thats your lot. In the end I was pleased with them, mainly with the interactive DVD quiz. It was the best addition I have seen yet, and the kids loved it. If only Disney would follow suit on a kids film - they would be hooked for hours!
SUMMARY:
This was a watchable film with funny bits in places. Its worth a watch and isnt a chick flick as I first expected. In actual fact, I think most blokes would find it an interesting take on what women think when walking down the street.
The Extra's are also pretty good, with the inclusion of an interactive DVD quiz that will keep any adult hooked for a good half hour and it kept the kids quiet too. I would have paid a fiver for the quiz on its own having seen how the kids took to it.
For less than a fiver on Tesco.com I would recommend it as great value for money - whether you have kids or not. It's not the best film ever, but it is well worth watching.

...having the ability to hear what women think. At first, hearing the voices of every single woman make Nick think he's going mad and he doesn't take kindly to finding out what the women around him truly think of him. But, after seeing a psychologist in a bid to get rid of his curse, the psychologist makes him see that he has been given a gift that he could use to his advantage. So Nick takes on a positive new approach towards his 'gift', hoping to ... ...the women and Nick regarding what they are thinking and saying. The great thing about this film is that it is not only for girls to watch - my husband found it just as funny as me and he really enjoyed it. This is a great light-hearted and relaxing, romantic and funny film which I'd definitely recommend seeing.

Ever wondered what women really want ? Then no worries , as this is where this movie comes in handy. I first saw this movie on the last day of school before the Christmas holidays. Actually , we only saw half of it as I remember the bell going , and so we had to stop the film. However , I saw the whole movie a couple of nights back , when it was on the television.

~What I thought~
A lot of times you see a trailer for a film and it has a few funny scenes in it, and when you actually go and see the movie, those funny scenes are the only ones in the entire film. I had expected this to be like that, but I was wrong, and found it consistently funny all the way through. Mel Gibson is brilliantly cast as Nick, but I have to say that I was not impressed ...

Do not expect anything deep, this is a turn off your brain and be entertained film, it proves that Gibson can do comedy and that he is rather a suave dancer (watch the scenes and see what I mean).
Geoffrey said he enjoyed it, although he did say that it was totally stupid and devoid of realism. Although he did try to dress up as a female giraffe afterwards and electrocute himself, in order that he could read those darn female dogs thoughts. Have to say that he is a handful at times.
WhatWomenWant is out on video and DVD and is a 12 certificate, watch it with your partner, or if you have teenage girls watch it with them. There is no sex or swearing and the film was probably only was rated a 12 due to its discussions of sex that happen between Nick and his daughter.

I bought this Region 2 DVD from W.H Smith's for 17.99 which I now think is a bargain for such a hilarious film.
WhatWomenWant is a very funny film by Nancy Meyers starring Mel Gibson (who is my favorite actor) as a successful advertising executive called Nick Marshall.
Nick thinks he is God's gift to Women he thinks that he has Women falling at his feet, but oh he is so wrong. He is confident that he is in line for a promotion at the advertising firm he works for called Sloane Curtis but his Boss has other ideas and hires a Woman called Darcy Maguire who is played by Helen Hunt to be Nick's Superior and to bring the female touch and perspective to Sloane Curtis in order to close more deals and bring new clients.

This is a fairly funny film, which doesn't take too much concentration. The ending is fairly obvious but no more than in most other rom coms!! Whilst it may not be a classic it can be watched again and again. Good performances from Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt, although Helen Hunt seems a bit miscast. WhatWomenWant is a good family film, which shouldn't offend too many people! I have had the DVD for quite a while and still watch it repeatedly and still enjoy it! Many films of this genre seem repetitive but this has a few twists before the end and makes a welcome change to 'usual plots'. This is definately worth watching, but it may not be what everyone wants!! ...

DVD Description
Director, writer, and producer Nancy Meyers's (THE PARENT TRAP) sophomore directorial effort is a lively screwball fantasy featuring Mel Gibson in his first romantic comedy. Gibson plays Nick Marshall, a high-flying chauvinistic Chicago advertising executive who, like his musical idol, Frank Sinatra, calls women "baby" and believes he has the world on a string. Nick experiences a rude awakening when the creative director position he coveted goes to Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt), a savvy outsider--and a woman--who intends to aggressively pursue the lucrative women's market. While trying to brainstorm ideas for "feminine" products, Nick experiences a freak accident that gives him the ability to hear women's thoughts. Determined to win back his stolen job, Nick uses his terrifying yet useful new talent to scrutinize Darcy and finds his smart, beautiful rival may not be the "bitch on wheels" he imagined. Meanwhile, he also must maneuver carefully within complex relationships with his estranged teenage daughter, Alex (Ashley Johnson), and a pretty coffee shop waitress, Lola (Marisa Tomei). Once Nick begins to listen to the new voices he hears, his previous worldview is challenged, and he finds that he finally might understand what women want.
