WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS
A FILM ONLY REVIEW
I know that they are very predictable. But I do love a good romantic comedy. As I generally enjoy films Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz so I was quite enthusiastic about watching ‘What Happens in Vegas’.
Wall Street workaholic Joy McNally (played by Cameron Diaz) was a successful woman who loved to plan, she planned everything, she planned what she was going to plan. One of the things that she had planned was a surprise birthday party for her long time boyfriend Mason (played by Jason Sudeikis). I guess she was sorry that she did, because at this party -in front of all of their friends – he finished their relationship.
Elsewhere, Jack Fuller (played by Ashton Kutcher) , whose refusal to finish anything has just got him sacked from his father's company, by his father himself.
Joy and Jack each get a talking to from their friends Hater, (Rob Corddry) and Tipper (Lake Bell). This talk results in the four going
on holiday to Las Vegas. Predictably the friends end up being assigned the same hotel room, and they decide to have a drink together.
Joy and Jack end up spending the evening together drinking, and drinking and ……getting drunk. The morning after brought the couple more than a hangover; they awake to the realisation that they had married each other the night before. The ‘ happy couple’ decide to make the most of it and be pleasant to each other about their divorce – both were worried the other would want to stay married.
But when a coin is put in a machine...winning $3,000,000 an argument breaks out over whom the winnings belong to. Is it Joys because it was her coin that won, or is it Jacks because he was the one who put the coin in the machine? But when they take it to the courts, instead of granting the divorce, Judge Whopper ruled that the couple had to live as husband and wife for six months and attend marriage counselling with Dr. Twitchell (played by Queen Latifah) After the 6 months they'll either be awarded the divorce, and split the money 50/50, or they will stay together as man and wife and keep the money. This is where all the fun begins.
Ok, ‘What Happens in Vegas’, was predictable, the plot was unbelievable the humour was at times over the top but I thought that it actually turned out to be pretty funny, enjoyable, and light-hearted. There was a quite a lot of slapstick type of humour, but I thought that it actually fitted in quite well with the overall theme of the film. In fact I think that I would go as far as saying that this was one of the funnier romantic comedies that I’ve seen in a while
The acting in the film is not wonderful, some is worse than others, Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz have a good onscreen chemistry and are likeable enough, but I personally didn’t think that they had a lot to work on with the script. In my opinion, it was the two less well-known actors. Lake Bell and Rob Corddry, who are the real stars of this film, they play Hater and Tipper, the happy couples best friends. They have such brilliant love/hate chemistry that they are the funniest part of the film. Queen Latifah also appears as the psychiatrist, Dr. Twitchell, but sadly she has a surprisingly small role but a memorable one. I didn’t particularly like Dennis Miller’s portrayal as Judge Whopper, although he did have some hilarious lines.
Overall I have to say that ‘What Happens in Vegas’ was surprisingly better than I was expected. I know that it is cheesy, that there is an abundance of overacting and ridiculous coincidences, but there's also a charisma about this film that makes you keep watching, and it IS funny. I think that both male and female could sit down together ansd watch this quite happily – there is enough rom for the girls and com for the boys to make a surprisinglywatchable rom-com
