What Happens In Vegas (2008)
I have to say that this is not the type of film that I would usually go for; in fact, my daughter ended up going to the cinema to see it with a friend and her mum. Anyway, she really enjoyed it and talked me into watching it with her, when it appeared on Sky Anytime last week-end and I'm glad she did...
What's it all about?
The story introduces us to Joy (Cameron Diaz) (career driven and uptight) and Jack (laid back and lazy) (Ashton Kutcher) who are both troubled in their lives. They individually decide to take a break and go off to Vegas, with their best friends. They meet when they are accidentally assigned the same room. As recompense for their inconvenience they are offered plenty of vouchers and a posh room, and they set out for a night of fun. The evening gets wilder and wilder and they get very drunk.
They wake up the next morning to find wedding rings on their fingers. After an argument in which they both realise the horror of their mistake (they seem to find fault
with each other very quickly), they part company, and as they do, Joy puts some money in a slot machine and Jack pulls the lever. They turn back as they hear alarms going off and realise they have won $3,000,000!
On returning home they attempt to get a quick divorce, but the judge is not impressed and orders them to try for six months to sort out their relationship before any divorce can be issued.
With the encouragement of their friends, they each decide to drive the other to distraction in order to get them to leave the marriage and so break the court order. In this way they believe that they will get the whole £3,000,000.
The film follows their tricks and antics and personal changes that they make to their characters and of course what happens to the money in the end.
Opinion
This film got off to a promising start for me because one of the main characters is called Jack. I love characters called Jack. Jack Bauer, Captain Jack (pirate), Captain Jack (Dr Who), Jack T Colton (prizes for which film he was in!!), I think that you get the picture.
The film got off to a fast start, with Joy being dumped (in a very embarrassing manner) and Jack getting fired.
One thing that I really liked about this film is that it doesn't pretend to be clever or something that it is not. It is just a funny hour and a half, with lots of great one liners.
I don't usually like Cameron Diaz very much, but she was very funny and portrayed an uptight regimented person really well. She was perfect for this role and I can't imagine anyone else who could have acted this role as good.
I enjoyed watching Ashton Kutcher in Cheaper By The Dozen also and think he is great at comedy acting too. I would definitely like to see him in more roles like this. He did a great job of playing the lovable rogue, who both was irritating but charming too.
They both played a roles where they 'found' themselves and I enjoy stories that see the character of a person transform. She became less straight laced and he found that he could be serious and committed to something he believed in too.
I also think that the supporting actors who played their best friends were fabulous in their own right. Very funny lines were given to them and delivered perfectly. Joy's friend Tipper says "If I could kill someone with my mind right now, it would be you." to the character 'Hater' Jack's friend. It doesn't seem so funny now written down, but was at the time and there are plenty of lines like this.
The surprise party at the beginning of the film was also very funny, but just a bit embarrasing watching it with my 12 year old. I must be a bit of a prude!
Overall this was much better than I expected and the scenes of Las Vegas were great at making it look like an exiting place to go to. This isn't a film about Las Vegas though, so be aware that the part in Vegas is only for around 20 minutes or so.
There is also an additional scene at the end of the film, which is really funny so don't switch off as soon as the credits come on.
It's a great teenager film, but I enjoyed watching it too!
Availability
It is on Sky Anytime at the moment and is available on dvd from Amazon for £4.98 which I think is quite a fair price. It is a good film to put on when you are feel like a bit of cheering up and want a few carefree laughs.
I have to admit that I have watch this three times since the week-end, so perhaps my 12 year old daughter knew better than me on this occasion!!
