For my birthday last year, I decided I didn’t want anything big and decided to go to the cinema with some friends. After looking through what was on that day, we went for What Happens In Vegas, because it sounded like my type of film. It was a good choice.
I went in expecting to really like the film; Cameron Diaz is one of my favourite actresses, the trailer had made it look really entertaining and funny and people who ha seen it before us had thought it really great.
The Storyline. Joy McNally, played by Cameron Diaz, is a workaholic perfectionist who is dumped by her fiancée, Mason in the middle of a surprise party she threw him. To get over it, she goes to Vegas with her best friend.
Jack Fuller, played by Ashton Kutcher, is the opposite. A slacker who isn’t bothered about where he’s going in his life, he’s failing everything and it’s the last straw when his own father fires him. He decides to go to Vegas with his best friend to just have a good time.
After a mix up with their rooms, they end up partying the night away on the strip together, and then get married on a whim. A very drunk whim, as when they wake up in bed together the next day, they can hardly remember anything about the night before. The obvious thing to do is get a divorce, and they plan on getting one when they’re back home. However, a spanner is thrown in the works when Jack wins $3 million on a slot machine with Joy’s quarter. No idea who will get the money, they go to court to battle it out and the judge sentences them to six months hard marriage. Hilarity ensues as the other tries everything to get the money.
Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher were really a great strength of the film, they had great chemistry and it seemed like they had a real connection. Cameron Diaz plays Joy Fuller so well, and really shines in the scenes where the emotion comes out. You might remember her from The Holiday or In Her Shoes. She always plays really nice roles, and I have to wonder what she would be like in a serious role or as the evil one. Ashton Kutcher also plays his role quite well, I haven’t seen him in anything else so I cant really comment, but apparently he was really good in Just Married. They are supported by Lake Bell and Rob Corddy, the best friends. Queen Latifah also makes an appearance as the therapist who’s trying to get them to make their marriage work.
Also, although there wasn’t actually an official soundtrack released, I can remember the songs fitting in really well with the mood of the films and the scenes. They included: Flashdance - What a Feeling, Hot Chocolate – You Sexy Thing, Mika – Grace Kelly and Eels – Hey Man (Now You’re Really Living.)
The montages in the film were done really well, and blended together with just the right scenes. Las Vegas also looked really great, the film really made me want to go there!
I now have it on DVD, and have re watched it a few times, but having seen it in loads of shops, the average you can get it for is around £7, which isn’t bad as it was out last year.
In my opinion, it was a great film and is now one of my favourites, I can watch it over and over again, and had loas of great comedy bits in.
You’ll like it if you like – Chick Flicks in general, Friends season 6, Mean Girls, The Holiday, Just Married and more.
