What Happens In Vegas is a romantic comedy starring two huge Hollywood stars in the form of Cameron Diaz & Asthon Kutcher. The film was released in cinemas on 9th May 2008 & grossed an estimated $212,222,646 at the box office with an original budget of $35,000,000. The film received numerous bad reviews despite the public taking a shine to it. The film was ranked number four of the worst films of 2008. What Happens In Vegas is rated 12 & has a running time of 99 minutes.
The film?s directed by Tom Vaughan, a Scottish director. His list of credits is limited, he directed the film Starter For 10 & he?s directed a couple of episodes of TV series Cold Feet amongst a couple of others.
The film stars Cameron Diaz, one of the biggest & most well known actresses around. She?s starred in numerous films such as; The Holiday, Charlie?s Angels, Shrek, The Sweetest Thing & There?s Something About Mary. All good films so I was disappointed with What Happens In Vegas as I do tend to like her films.
Ashton Kutcher isn?t as well known as his female co-star & is more famous in America than in the UK. He?s famous for presenting the MTV show Punk?d where he sets up celebrities. He?s also famous for being Demi Moore?s toy boy! He?s starred in small & somewhat successful films
like; Dude Where?s My Car, Guess Who & A lot Like Love.
What Happens In Vegas is the story of Joy McNally (Cameron Diaz) & Jack Fuller (Ashton Kutcher). Joy has just been dumped by her long-term boyfriend & decides to take a trip to Vegas to cheer herself up & forget about everything that?s going on in her life. Then there?s Jack, a lazy lay-about who?s just been fired by his boss who just happens to be his father. He too decides to go to Vegas to have a good time & forget about his job. On a wild night out the two meet & have a one night stand.
They wake up in the morning hungover & tired only to discover that Jill has a ring on her wedding finger. The two panic & decide that they can?t possible be married as they don?t even know each other. They decide they must get a divorce. Before leaving Vegas Jack uses a slot machine that Joy gave him the money for. He lucks out & wins $3 million. Joy argues that it was her coin so the money?s hers & Jack says that he used the machine so it?s his money.
When they return home they visit a divorce lawyer who, to their dismay tells the ?happy? couple that until they can divorce they must spend 6 months living together trying to make the marriage work, they must also attend a marriage councillor who happens to be Queen Latifah in a role way outside anything she normally plays, infact she?s one of the best things about this film. If after 6 months they still want to be divorced they will each get $1.5 million. Sounds simple doesn?t it?!
The couple soon realise that it isn?t quite so simple. They are told that if one gives up on the marriage the other will receive all $3,000,000 so both are out to sabotage the other.
I never got round to seeing this at the cinema so when it came out on DVD I went out & bought it as soon as I could as I was looking forward to watching it. As I said earlier I usually enjoy Cameron Diaz?s films so I assumed that this would be no different. I also liked Ashton Kutcher in Dude Where?s My car so I was especially looking forward to seeing the two together. However when I got round to watching this I was very disappointing. I wasn?t expecting an epic film that would win any Oscars however I was expecting an enjoyable romantic comedy with two good actors in it, my expectations were obviously way too high as what I got was way off the mark. This film is extremely slow & boring, the gags aren?t funny in the slightest & after about half an hour I was extremely tempted to turn this off although I resisted & decided to see it through to the end in the hope that it would get better as it goes on.
I remember reading somewhere that one critic had named this film the funniest film of the summer. I really don?t know where they got that idea from, maybe they had watched something else by mistake! This film isn?t funny at all, the gags are very predictable as is the story. As soon as the two are told they must live together you can predict exactly what will happen. I think before even watching this film it?s obvious what will happen! This film was extremely disappointing & I wouldn?t recommend it to anyone.
On the DVD that I bought which is the one disc there are no special features included, just one more thing to bring this film down a notch! However on the two disc there are special features & these include; Directors Commentary Deleted Scenes Outtakes Trailers
I?m actually quite glad that I didn?t pay anymore for the two disc as after watching the film I wouldn?t have bothered with the special features even if I did have access to them! I was very disappointed with this film.
This film is available from play.com for £4.99 & to be perfectly honest, after seeing this I wouldn?t even spend that to see this again. I paid £9.99 for this when it first came out & I wish I kept the receipt! If you?re really keen to see this I suggest renting it.
