What Happens in Vegas....probably should have stayed in Vegas!!
For anyone who has been to Vegas or knows about it, then you are probably familiar with the well know saying, "What Happnes in Vegas, stays in Vegas". It is uttered by the millions of people of a certain age who hope that the things they get up to in Sin City (drinking, one night stands to name but a few) are not to be repeated to people back home. Given the nature of this phrase then it's pretty easy to see what type of movie this is before it has even started.
That said, I am a fan of easy to watch RomCom's so I did have high hopes for this film but unfortunately it did not live up to them. To me this film was just way too predictable, I always knew it was going to be somewhat predicatable but I could have written the script before hand just based on the premise and I would have got it right.
The film came out in 2008 and as I've said above is classified as a romantic comedy. The two leading actors are Ashton Kutcher as Jack and Cameron Diaz as Joy. Ashton basically plays himself from his Punked days (if you have ever seen that series), the loveable, no good, juvenile rogue although he may be different nowadays since his marriage to Demi Moore! Cameron in my opinion also plays a character somewhat like herself, sexy fun and cool but a bit of a workaholic. I do like her as an actress but think she has been better in other things.
Both of their characters have just had a bit of a knock in their lives. Joy has been dumped by her fiancée and Jack has just been sacked, by his father. They need an escape and so what better place to go than Vegas!! Now I am a big fan of Vegas and for me there was not enough of it shown in this movie. I think to emphasis the basis of this movie they needed to show more of it and more of the night that these two characters had together. Basically they meet in Vegas and get drunk. Their night is shown from a series of little flashbacks which were funny, (dancing on tables, falling over etc) but I would really have liked to see these expanded a bit, especially showing how they actually decided to get married. They wake up in the morning and the realisation that they are married both this them but they decided that it was a mistake and to annul the marriage. That is until Jack uses one of Joy's coins in a slot machine and lo and behold they win $3million!
Back home in order for them to get a share of the money a judge orders them to stay together for six months as he is upset at the state of affairs in the country as a whole nowadays and decided to use these two as an example. They also have to move in together so Joy moves in to Jack's stereotypical bachelor pad and have to attend sessions with a marriage counsellor (played by Queen Latifah) but again these are rather predictable and a bit boring.
Well, the film probably could have ended there as you can probably guess the rest of the movie. They start of hating each other, slowly begin to like each other, so on and so on until......... although I am not going to ruin the end for you.
Although the film has been a financial excess, grossing more than $211million when it only cost $35 million to make it was not really a fans favourite as it was voted forth in a New York Post Top ten movies of 2008 review!
