Joy McNally has just been dumped by her fiancé during a surprise birthday bash she put together for him - Jack Fuller has just been fired by his father from the family business - the only thing these two people have in common is… absolutely nothing!
Deciding to lick their wounds in Las Vegas, Joy and her girl pal Tipper bump into Jack and his sidekick Hater, and the foursome, although they don't actually kick it off straight away, decide to paint the town. With the help of a little music, gambling and lots of booze, the foursome end up in one of Las Vegas's numerous cheesy chapels and Joy and Jack tie the knot.
The next day, realising what they've done, Joy and Jack get into an argument, Joy takes out a coin, Jack sticks it in a slot machine, and presto… Jack hits the mother-load! Unfortunately for him, the coin belonged to Joy, and she wants the cash.
Taking their case to court, Joy and Jack plead their case in front of a not-so-understanding judge who decides to make an example of them - the verdict? They've got six months to work it out with the help of a marriage counsellor… if that doesn't work, the judge will consider a divorce. Unfortunately for Joy and Jack, working it out isn't in their agendas, and the only thing they want is to piss each other off.
'What Happens In Vegas' is pretty much your usual rom-com with the boy meets girl formula, friends get involved, situation gets out of hand, a bit of nastiness, abracadabra and it's a happily ever after. This film is the usual, but with the added touch that it's actually funny and wholeheartedly entertaining. The writer hasn't attempted to milk the silliness, nor has she attempted to force the absurd upon us - therefore, what we have here is a movie that is actually fun to watch.
Ashton Kutcher, not may favourite actor (putting it nicely), managed a believable performance while abstaining from the ridiculous, while as Cameron Diaz, as usual, came across as somewhat ditsy but thoroughly loveable. True, there are a few scenes that grate on the nerves, a touch of nastiness that is far from funny and is somewhat of a turn-off, but a bit of patience pays off and everything is made right in the end - but then again, that's to be expected.
There isn't much to be said about this type of movie, the formula is always the same, the only thing that differs is the laughs and the actors - in this case, the laughs are constant and the actors are perfect for the part.
'What Happens In Vegas' falls way short of being as good as 'Shallow Hal' 'Enchanted' or 'The Jane Austen Book Club', however, it is thoroughly entertaining and will fill the void on a boring Saturday night.
