After spending £5 on a train ticket, and trudging in the poring rain to the cinema we ended up going to see this movie on a coin toss. It was either this or Sex in The City.
I went into this movie, with quite low expectations. I was pretty much expecting another '27 Dresses', dull, boring and way too predictable. Predictable? Yes this movie did sin in that category, you can pretty much guess the ending from reading the plot. Dull and Boring? Nope. It's actually quite hilarious. Here's what the basic plot is about? See if you can guess the ending.
The Plot
Joy McNally (Cameron Diaz) is a stock broker who has just been dumped by her fiancée, Mason. She decides to take her best friend on the honeymoon to Vegas instead.
Jack Fuller (Ashton Kutcher) is a furniture maker, who gets fired… by his own father. With nothing going for him, his best friend drags him to Vegas.
Now in Vegas the foursome get put into the same room, which causes a fight. At the end of the night, and after many drinks, Joy & Jack end up married. The next day, he uses her 'quarter' and wins $3 million on a slot machine, due to the fact they are married, she wants half.
They go to court and are made to spend 6 months together and try their hardest to make the marriage work, in that time the money will be frozen and they will have no access. Once the 6 months has ended they can either split the money or one takes it.
Dirty tricks follow as they both try and keep the cash.
The Cast
Cameron Diaz as usual is pretty hilarious. If you liked her in Something About Mary and all of those other films she sorta plays the same character over and over. Snotty, uptight, but still damn right funny. She is over shined by Ashton Kutcher in my opinion though.
Ashton Kutcher, first things first, DAMN he's hot. He spent a great portion of the movie in just his boxers, I'm not complaining, oh and for the guys, Cameron Diaz gets her kit off as well. If you liked him in Just Married, you'll like this as it's pretty much the same premise.
Lake Bell & Rob Corddry play the best friends. There constant bickering just adds to humour, especially the last scene, it was perfect.
Queen Latifa: Very disappointing. I don't know if it was just how they wrote her in the script but it's was a very boring and just… well boring performance.
What's good?
The plot may not be all that good and you may not need many brain cells to watch it, but it's still a lovely film to watch with the girls. It's actually got some great laugh out loud moments, which I was really surprised about. The two main characters and even the two sidekicks play off each other really well.
The comedy in this is great, it mainly does appeal to people of my age as it's pretty much slapstick kinda stuff. They both try their hardest to make the other one annoyed, which includes leaving the bathroom covered in hairs, taking the bathroom door off and even peeing in the sink. Hilarious, but a bit stupid really.
What's bad?
The plot, the storyline and just basically the script. It's all right, I'll give it that, but there's no real originality in the storyline. I could have probably have written the script as we were going along, it was that predictable. The laughs make up for it, and of course Ashton Kutcher's gorgeous… well everything. YUM
My verdict
If your favourite film is Silence Of the Lambs, What Happens in Vegas isn't for you. Same goes for the likes of Face/Off or anything that involves violence or action or anything like that. If you're a 10 Things I Hate About You or Coyote Ugly fan, you'll love this film. It's actually, dare I say it, funnier than 10 Things I Hate About You.
It's got a pretty awful plot, which I swear was taken from Just Married and season 6 of Friends in some way, but the laughs between the two leads are great.
The Plot: 2/10 Originality: 1/10 Humour: 9/10 Final: 12/30
Maybe not a good final verdict but it's still a great film overall, I'm sure Sex In the City would have been worse.
Advantages: Cameron Diaz Disadvantages: Not much romance and not enough funny comedy
what happens in vegas This film will not be a great film, that would entice me to watch in a year or two time and laugh my head off. This movie has the show references of 'friends' and perhaps other movies that are unknown to me. what happens in las vegas? Obvious answer in that people get drunk, they get married, and they gamble. You knew that already. Interestingly enough the film does not revolve around vegas all that much, most of the show setting ... ...ashton kutcher plays jack fuller who is a carpenter worker and is fired by his boss who, happens to be his dad (treat williams), for not doing his job properly. jack fullers best friend steve (rob corrdry) asks if they want to go to vegas for a fun adventure trip, as it appears they are bored. This is where jack meets cameron diaz joy who is a commodities trader on a trading market similar to the nasdaq exchange. joy who is equally frustrated and ...

...we get an overview of what a wonderful city New York is. "I could be brown, I could be blue, I could be violet sky," and with that you wonder how they'll manage to make Diaz and Kutcher bump into one another -- afterall they are both leading incredibly different lives. These include an all out party in the Fuller's martial apartment where Joy has got her friends to try and get Jack to cheat on her, so then Joy would be entitled to the entire $3 million. Queen Latifah makes a good appearance as the marriage councillor, Dr Twitchell, and the movie is genuinely funny. ...ninety-nine minute running time and what there is feels laboured. The character comedy doesn't work because the parts are under-written, the slapstick is unoriginal and the situation comedy forced. There's also a little matter of timing, as in Vaughan doesn't have any. He allows jokes to run on too long so they cease to be funny and pre-empts them too much so they go off like damp squibs when they eventually arrive. Casting is also a problem as the ... ...the cameras and that's exactly what he does as Jack. He's slobbish and scruffy, but really can't act so there's no depth to his performance. He also suffers from dodgy timing, so isn't very funny and has no chemistry with Cameron Diaz, making a mockery of their relationship.
The supporting cast seems to be an exercise in miscasting. Rob Corddry plays too straight as jack's best friend and lawyer Hater, making the character come across as a real ...

What Happens in Vegas....probably should have stayed in Vegas!! For anyone who has been to Vegas or knows about it, then you are probably familiar with the well know saying, "What Happnes in Vegas, stays in Vegas". It is uttered by the millions of people of a certain age who hope that the things they get up to in Sin City (drinking, one night stands to name but a few) are not to be repeated to people back home. Given the nature of this phrase then ... ...need an escape and so what better place to go than Vegas!! Now I am a big fan of Vegas and for me there was not enough of it shown in this movie. I think to emphasis the basis of this movie they needed to show more of it and more of the night that these two characters had together. Basically they meet in Vegas and get drunk. Their night is shown from a series of little flashbacks which were funny, (dancing on tables, falling over etc) but I would ...

...some friends. After looking through what was on that day, we went for What Happens In Vegas, because it sounded like my type of film. It was a good choice. I went in expecting to really like the film; Cameron Diaz is one of my favourite actresses, the trailer had made it look really entertaining and funny and people who ha seen it before us had thought it really great. The Storyline. Joy McNally, played by Cameron Diaz, is a workaholic perfectionist ... ...and I have to wonder what she would be like in a serious role or as the evil one. Ashton Kutcher also plays his role quite well, I haven’t seen him in anything else so I cant really comment, but apparently he was really good in Just Married. They are supported by Lake Bell and Rob Corddy, the best friends. Queen Latifah also makes an appearance as the therapist who’s trying to get them to make their marriage work. Also, although there wasn’t actually ...

DVD Description
Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher star as strangers who wake up a married couple after a crazy night in Las Vegas in director Tom Vaughn's (STARTER FOR 10) film. Joy (Diaz) is the type of woman who makes plans to make plans. She's expecting a marriage proposal, but her live-in boyfriend, Mason (Jason Sudeikis), has other ideas. When he dumps her, Joy heads to Vegas to forget her troubles with her friend Tipper (Lake Bell) and discovers her fun, spontaneous side. Unfortunately, she also wakes up with recently unemployed Jack (Kutcher) as her husband. The two quickly decide to divorce, but the plot thickens when Jack wins a $3 million slot jackpot using Joy's quarter. Since neither one of them wants to give up the cash, they each try to drive the other to file for divorce and give up the bounty. But love has a funny way of appearing when you least expect it, and in acting their worst, Joy and Jack actually bring out the best in each other. Diaz and Kutcher have excellent onscreen chemistry and make a very photogenic couple. Treat Williams stars as Jack's difficult-to-please father, while Rob Corddry is Jack's best friend, Hater. Queen Latifah and Dennis Miller appear briefly as a marriage counsellor and divorce court judge, respectively. The Vegas scenes are flashy and fun--just like Sin City--and the settings for the New York City scenes differentiate nicely between Joy's organized, structured life and Jack's less serious, happy-go-lucky attitude.
