Advantages: An amazing story that evolves around culture, gender, family and religion. Also beautifully shot. Disadvantages: There are none.
...It is a long time since I have seen a film that has moved me like this. It is not a chick flick, but a beautifully told story of a girl destined to be the leader of her tribe and the saviour of her people.
This film, shot in a remote village on the coast of New Zealand, takes you on an emotional journey against a beautiful background.
It has fantastic cinematography, colours and a close relationship with the nature that surrounds it, especially the whales.
I could not recommend this film more. It takes a little while to get into at the beginning as we learn the history behind the story, but once the present day story begins you will be intrigued and moved throughout.
(Also has a couple of wonderful comic characters to look out for!!)...

Advantages: A classic Disadvantages: The soundtrack

Ishmael joins Captain Ahab's ship for whaling (In a time when ships had sails not steam) and introduces its members. The ship embarks on a perilous journey. The whale is a white monster and for its time puts Jaws to shame. The ending is steeped in symbolism if only I understood it - no more for now it might spoil your enjoyment of the film.
***THE CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE***
Stunningly shot and impressively staged his exciting, epic work as responded well to digital enhancement for DVD. The soundtrack sounds dated and comes across rather like a scratchy gramophone record. It does the screenplay no justice. The dialogue too is dated but remains lively - possibly...
