When Westlifes The Greatest Hits: Volume One album was released, they released a video to go with it. The video contains all of their hits exactly like the album, but it shows you the videos for their songs instead.
If you didn't know already, Westlife are a boyband from Ireland consisting of Kian Egan, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, Nicky Byrne and (has now left, but on this video he's still with the band) Bryan McFadden. They've been around for about 7 or 8 years now.
The first 20 minutes or so is spent with Westlife themselves explaining how the band was formed. Simon Cowell also makes a brief appearance and tells us when he thought of the guys when he first met them! Before each video is shown, each member of the band tells us what they think of it which is interesting to hear.
1. Swear It Again Director: Phil Griffin Producer: Hera King Westlifes first single which went straight to number 1. It's a nice simple video for a first single, they're all dressed in black and it's set in a theatre. Nothing flash, but it works!
2. If I Let You Go Director: Sven Harding Producer: Luke Copeland This is set on a beach which is good enough, but I don't get the whole thing with the people riding the horses along the beach, jumping off cliffs to land into the sea etc! The best part is when Nickys white trousers go see-through in the sea :D
3. Flying Without Wings Director: Cameron Casey Producer: Richard
Fenton Another very simple video, but with Flying Without Wings being such a powerful song I think it's better that way. There isn't really a set, it's just a white/grey/black big room with nothing in it except the band, a choir and some other people.
4. Seasons In The Sun Director: Cameron Casey and Simon Brand Producer: Richard Fenton and Andy Leahy Not the best video they've ever done. It's in black and white, and snow falls behind them in the background. That's about it! It's nice to see Nicky and Kian singing though.
5. I Have A Dream Director: Cameron Casey Producer: Richard Fenton and Andy Leahy The lads arrive in Cardboard City and sing, then a bunch of kids appear and sing along with them which is quite cute. A nice Christmassy feel!
6. Fool Again Director: Cameron Casey Producer: Richard Fenton Set in Mexico I think? They cruise around in the car for a bit looking mean and moody, go off their seperate ways then end up at the top of a heeuge building. From what I hear they were terrified with having to stand on top of this building and I don't blame them, it's BIG. I think the location they chose was very nice.
Against All Odds, for some reason, was not included. The video mainly consists of Westlife and Mariah Carey in the studio and out and about from what I remember.
7. My Love Director: Cameron Casey Producer: Richard Fenton The lads attempt some acting at the beginning of this, they don't do a bad job! The first location is an empty train station, then it moves onto a street, then a beach, then a cliff, so they travel a lot in this vid! I believe this was shot in Ireland too which is great because Ireland is beautiful.
8. What Makes A Man Director: Stuart Gosling Producer: Patrick Holtkamp Shane, Mark and Kian get to drive very flash cars (I want Shanes car!), Bryan gets to land a helicopter (I doubt it was him who actually did that though) and Nicky gets to zoom in on a motorbike so I think they were all happy. They arrive in their own form of transport to a mansion in the middle of nowhere and mope about. It's a lovely video, but I don't like the suits they have to wear near the end. Was their stylist blind??
9. Uptown Girl Director: Stuart Gosling Producer: Patrick Holtkamp This was recorded for Red Nose Day, and they did a fantastic video to go with it! I love this video, it's one of their best. Just seeing them let themselves go makes the video great. Even Kian and Nicky get lines to sing too which is the icing on the cake. Claudia Schiffer (can't spell) also makes an appearance as she's the Uptown Girl. The video is set in a diner which was a very appropriate setting!
10. I Lay My Love On You Director: Stuart Gosling Producer: Patrick Holtkamp This video was filmed when they were doing a tour of Asia/Japan? (Can't remember which one it was). It shows the shows they did there and the promotion. I think it's a good video, plus we get to see what they were doing when they were taking a break from the UK!
11. When You're Looking Like That Director: Matthew Amos Producer: Marc Wilkinson Another video which shows a mixture of things. This follows their first tour Where Dreams Come True and a bit of their promotion day for their Coast To Coast album. A great video to go with a great song!
12. Queen Of My Heart Director: Max and Dania Producer: Pete Chambers This is also black and white at the beginning, but it turns to colour when the song gets going. It's set in a mansion which looks abandoned. Nicky shaves his hair off in this which is probably the highlight!
13. Angel Director: Phil Griffin Producer: Fiona Wright I really love this song, and the video is very simple. It's in black and white and not a great deal happens, but I still like it anyway because I like the song!
14. World Of Our Own: US Version Director: Antti Jokkinen Producer: Joyce Washington A different video was made for the US release, and it's completely the opposite of the video for everywhere else. The song is slightly different too. I don't know if it's a good video or not, it's alright but it's very focused on sex and shows about two (quite long) scenes with couples getting it on! The rest of it shows the lads either singing the song in a room or in a bar with about 10 girls around them. Different is what I'll describe it as.
15. World Of Our Own: Original Version Director: Cameron Casey Producer: Richard Fenton This is like the most opposite of the US version you can get. It gives off a bit of a futuristic feel which is cool. I actually really like this vid!
16. Bop Bop Baby Director: Max and Dania Producer: Pete Chambers I think this is one of their best videos, it's very cool. They play musketeers and have to escape from a prison to go and save a girl who's being forced to marry someone evil (the evil guy played very well by Vinnie Jones), cue lots of sword-fighting, backflipping and kicking the crap out of Vinnie Jones!
17. Unbreakable Director: Antti Jokkinen Producer: Joyce Washington And another really great video. It looks like a short movie. A young actor and actress play a young couple and it's really beautiful, but sad.
And that's their last video! Afterwards they give a short speech about what they're going to do next, then you can watch about a minutes worth of clips showing what they get up to in the studio/behind the scenes of videos.
Swear It Again: US Version Director: Nigel Dick Producer: Nina D'huly and Jordan Field After the credits have rolled the US version of Swear It Again appears. It's set at the car wash, and I don't think the song greatly matches the setting, but it's still pretty good.
This video/DVD is a must for any Westlife fan. It's probably not too widely available now that it's been out for a while, but it'll be lurking around on the internet somewhere. Check out eBay!
