Another Lone Gunslinger Tale - with a Twist
Review of The Quick And The Dead (Wide Screen) by
zerbine28
Advantages: Good performances from Stone, Hackman, Crowe; nice twist on gunslinger myth, interesting despite clichés.
Disadvantages: A few weak links; tighter plot needed perhaps?
...thought that 'The Quick and the Dead' was just another corny western chock-full of clichés. Seeing that Russell Crowe was in the cast piqued my curiosity, and I decided I'd see it anyway. Well, the film, indeed, had more than a fistful of western movie clichés, all especially familiar to fans of Sergio Leone and his goofy spaghetti westerns of the '60s and '70s. Contrary to expectations, 'The Quick and the Dead' would turn out to be a pleasant two ... ...plot that's morally satisfying in the good-triumphs-over-evil way. Oh, yes, I liked the film, and I'm certainly the last person you would call a fan of the genre.
Young Ellen (Sharon Stone) arrives in the town of Redemption with vengeance on her mind. (The well-executed opening sequence is an effective little piece, and sets the tone for the rest of the film.) Redemption is a dusty, one-street town probably located at the US-Mexican border, populated ...

You're Burnin' Daylight!
Review of The Cowboys DVD by
Rahielli
Advantages: Excellent story, fantastic cast
Disadvantages: for a western... none!
...I watched a lot of the Western Genre of films. They are my Mother's favorites, so of course she introduced them to me. I can still remember watching this film for the first time and absolutely loving it. As a kid I thought it was really cool to see a film where a lot of the characters were just about the same age as me, and they were doing things that adults thought they couldn't. Not only were they taking on adult roles, but they were successful ... ...evening. I showed him the section in my DVD case that had movies he was allowed to see, and he sat quietly on the floor looking through titles. Finally he said, "Can we watch this one?" In his hand was my copy of John Wayne and the Cowboys. It'd been ages since I'd seen the film, and truthfully I'd forgotten how much I really enjoyed it. I've also created another fan, because my nephew loved it.

Not to be missed
Review of Deadwood - Series 1 - Complete DVD by
colin_worldcup
Advantages: Great entertainment.
Disadvantages: Too addictive!
...previously only flicked over to Deadwood when it was on the TV be it waiting for something else to start or during breaks I had obviously struggled to pick up what was going on. However after buying season 1 (for £15-bargain!) I found myself asking why I had been so stupid as not to have watched any of the 3 season run previously!
As I don't believe in giving strorylines away I won't touch on that side of things, If you are interested and act on ...

Nothing like Clint Eastwood
Review of 3:10 To Yuma DVD by
galatico1
Advantages: Shoot out scenes
Disadvantages: Not a great role for Russell Crowe
...be expected from the western 3:10 to Yuma with such actors as Russell Crowe(such films as Gladiator) and Christian Bale(Batman) however after the successfulness of James Mangold Walk the Line, this film has failed to provide a adequate supply of the thrilling scenes which Westerns have come to give us. A un-realistic close bond which is created between these unfamiliar foes, which blossoms throughout the film at least adds something different to ... ...and mouse chase between Russell Crowe's gang and Christian Bale, make out for a ending which was to be expected by many of the viewers, after both actors successfulness, this film is a step back in their amazing line up to films in which they have acted and will hope to forget and move on. ...

Peckinpah's brutal vision sees the light of day
Review of Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid (Special Edition) by
martyn73
Advantages: see the film the way it was meant to be seen
Disadvantages: none
...look at the legend of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Released in this new form it adds extra scenes which give more character study although in places it does seem like there are still parts missing.
Nevertheless it is a beautifully shot film which due to the subject matter has a sense of inevitable doom about it. The violence that is so much a part of Peckinpah's films is here in its full glory serving to show the true brutality of the Old West.
