'Jake fell off a horse? He fell.....off a horse?'
Advantages: Magnificent Disadvantages: None
Silverado was one of those films when I was a kid that I constantly watched bits of but never all of it. The reason for this was because someone in my family had taped over the last 10 or 15 minutes or so with something else, so I never had a chance to watch the entire film. It was an ITV recording as well, so it was littered with ad breaks. A few years ago, it was on Sky Movies, and I recorded it properly, standing guard by the video recorder and ... ...Lone drifter Mal comes to Silverado in search of his sister and some peace, but racism stands in the way of his goal, as the white folk of the town react badly to a black man coming in and drinking in 'their' bar. Danny Glover gives a very calm and controlled performance in that whole 'wouldn't wanna mess with him!' kind of way. The other two men are brothers: Emmet and Jake, played by Scott Glenn and Kevin Costner respectively. Glenn gives a typically ...

Where's The Dog?
Advantages: First epic Western for years! Disadvantages: There should have been a sequel!
...In fact this is where Silverado made its money; the film was given such a glowing reviews that the rental markets started to see its first straight to VHS success story, really it is a shame as this film would look perfect on the big screen. Strangely the last line said by Costner's character is "We'll be back!" A sequel was planned and for a lot of people would have been strongly welcomed, unfortunately everyone involved in the film went on to other ... ...soon became apparent that it was not going to be possible to bring a second chapter to the screen. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this as it was one of the first Westerns that actually got me into what was then called 'cowboy films' and given the fact that my parents had to wait three weeks to rent a copy shows how big a thing this actually was. This is also a film that appeals across the sexes and is not a boys own adventure at all. The studios picked ...

Pale Rider (actually Quite-Well-Tanned Rider)
Advantages: Clint Eastwood fitting his character wonderfully. Disadvantages: Not much in the way of surprises in the plot.
...slow and consequently boring.
Pale Rider is rather a western that should still appeal to lovers of the aforementioned films, but also those who prefer a more obvious plot and their idea of action and drama aren't tense stand-offs before a gunfight. The film begins with a small community of gold-prospectors who are being terrorised by a more wealthy and industrial group of prospectors (which, if there is one particular message from the film, probably ... ...when it's coming generally).
Pale Rider lacks some of the mystery and intrigue of For a Fistful of Dollars (etc), but packs in a decent amount of plot which is entertaining the whole way through. The other characters are all likeable too (except the ones you're not supposed to like, of course). Being well cast, you remember the lesser characters almost as much as Eastwood and each one has an important role to play in the story.
One other thing ...

Dunbar, not Dumb Bear!
Advantages: Fantastic visuals, Costner Disadvantages: Can draw it out too long in places
...most powerful films to date, Dances With Wolves is a thoughtful and emotional tale that requires a bit of concentration. Set in the aftermath of the Civil War, it features KC as a war hero who is relocated to a post near a tribe of Sioux Indians.
The initial grasp of the film makes you think it's going to be one with emphasis on the conflict involving the Sioux, and for the first part of the film, this is indeed how it is shown, particularly as ... ...Mary McDonnell as a love interest for Dunbar.
Dances With Wolves is available from amazon.co.uk for £6.98. It's a film I recommend watching, but you need to focus and concentrate. It's not the sort of film you can have on in the background and completely understand. Recommended. ...
