Another boring Sunday night at home and the decision to watch a film seems like the only option. So into the DVD collection I go and pull out a fairly recent addition to my collection, Welcome to Collinwood. I’m not entirely sure what it was about this film that made me buy it, I’d hardly heard anything about it however now that I’ve watched it I’m quite glad that I did take the gamble on it.
A petty criminal Cosimo (Luis Guzman) is caught red handed stealing a car and ends up in prison. Where he finds out about a Bellini (A Big Job), from a lifer in the pen he needs to find a mellinski to take the fall for him and he's willing to pay $15000. So he sets his girlfriend, Rosalind (Patricia Clarkson) on the outside to find him a mellinski who can get him out of the prison so he can pull this one job that will make him rich.
So she approaches various different criminals in the Collinwood area to try and take the fall, but none of them are interested and each one knows someone else who can do it as longs as they can have a part of the Bellini. Finally they get Pero (Sam Rockwell) to agree to it and after an overdramatic performance in court an extra 6 months is added onto Cosimo's sentence and Pero gets three years.
Having told Cosimo all this, Cosimo then tells him all about his Bellini and why the lifer can’t pull the job himself. So having got all the details it turns out that Pero has actually got a suspended sentence and has been released to lead the gang on this job. So do they manage to pull the job of and if they do what exactly can they expect to get out of it in the end?
Now this is pretty much the first hit film from the writing duo of Anthony and Joe Russo who also direct the film. They had a couple of smaller films before hand but to date this is their biggest project. Backed up by Steven Soderbergh (Out Of Sight) and George Clooney, who both help out on the production side. The script as already mentioned was penned by the directing duo, and a good job they have made of it, with plenty of comedy moments to keep you interested.
The film flows along quite smoothly although there were parts where to start with your not entirely sure what is going on, but it soon gets explained. The film has been likened to Oceans Eleven, with the Clooney connection and it being a similar sort of heist film, although it is a lot funnier. Only the odd special effects are used with most of it relying on just normal action and not heavily on them.
As far as stars of the film, really the best role has to be that of Pero, played by Sam Rockwell, who I wasn’t actually aware of before this film. He seems to have the right sort of attitude for the part, which makes him a lot more convincing. For the short scenes that he’s in I wasn’t that impressed by Luis Guzman, who again I haven’t really seen in much before but his part in this didn’t really inspire me to watch anything else with him in.
Other mentions go to of course George Clooney, who plays an ex safe cracker who now in a wheel chair has to train people how to get into safe’s. Although not a huge role for George he does play it well, but mainly his role is cut down, obviously with him producing as well. The other real star of the film was William H Macy who plays Riley an ex con whose wife is in prison and he’s been left holding the baby. Some of the more comical moments come from Macy’s character, which again adds a little extra appeal to the film.
The setting is perfect, taking you deep into the slums of an American city, where almost every aspect has been recreated in such away to give the film a bit of realism. Soundtrack wise, I can’t actually remember hearing any music, but I’m sure there must have been some there somewhere.
To be honest this is one of those films you really must see, even if it is just for George Clooney’s little cameo appearance. Well worth at least renting once. Of course it’s not as straightforward as the brief plot summary above as there are a lot of other twists, but any more detail would actually ruin the film. As I said definitely recommended and watch out for future films by the Russo brothers.
Advantages: Excellent cast Disadvantages: ever so slighty over hyped
...George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh, welcome to Collinwood is not your average american comedy. Although there are elements of slapstick which american humour over relies on, the majority of the films laughs are based on subtle irony and this works brilliantly with the misfit characters that make up this rather simple story.
Story : The story starts off with petty thief Cosimo being told a story by a lifer in prison. Soon however Cosimo realises ... ...plan for a huge pay day or as it is reffered to by criminals, the perfect Belini. One slight problem, Cosimo is still in prison. It soon falls upon his girl Rosalind to find the man who can carry out the plan. Needless to say she finds her man but only with the help of five other guys who each want a piece of the action. What ensues is the trials and tribulations of this group of opportunists as they attempt to pull off the heist that will change ...

Advantages: fun but daft, lots of laughs Disadvantages: not enough of George Clooney
I was interested to watch Welcome to Collinwood for a couple of reasons. Firstly because George Clooney is in it and secondly it is a comedy likened to Oceans Eleven which I really enjoyed. I obtained my copy from the Swapshop site and last night sat down with my husband to watch it. We did enjoy it but I'm not sure that it was quite what I was expecting. The film was made in 2002 and was directed by Joe and Antony Russo. I think the tagline for ... ...safe. No brains! (I have to confess that I have stolen this for my title too!). The five guys in question live in Collinwood a small town where little happens and where there are little prospects. Everyone is looking for their 'bellini!' According to message boards on the IMDb website this is supposedly street slang for a perfect heist plan - which is the only way any of them are going to make enough money to get out of the town. The five guys are ...

...which culminated in me watching Welcome to Collinwood this afternoon.
So a brief idea of what the film is then eh? well its a comedy but not your average type of nowadays comedy (i.e. American Pie, Road Trip and Not Another Teen Movie). The film surrounds a gang of small-time crooks who’ve been given details of one great heist where they could end up walking away from the whole Job with a cool $300,000 - there’s one problem - to get every detail ... ...honest the few reviews of Welcome to Collinwood that I read left me feeling a little unsure as to whether it was worth me going to see it or not - a lot of people were slating it because of George Clooney’s addition as producer, but in my eyes at least - those movie critics were wrong, its rare for me to actually laugh out loud in a cinema but on this particular movie there were plenty of occasions that along with the rest of the cinema-goers I was ...

Advantages: Hilarious movie Disadvantages: Can't think of any
A guy’s got a life sentence in jail and he knows about a very big job, worth 300 grand (it was big at the time). So what does he do with this knowledge? He passes it on to a cell mate, but this cell mate is too greedy to wait until he gets out, so he needs a Mullinski. Mullinski – To take the fall for a con, after being paid a certain amount of money.
Word gets out that this guys needs a Mullinski, and two seconds later word gets out as to why he ... ...guy’s got a Bellini. Bellini – A big score, worth a major amount of money. Confused yet?...No? Give me a few minutes. So a bunch of street criminals get word about this and all want in, but neither of them want to go to jail, they just want in on the job, so one of them cleverly gets this guy to talk, now all they have to do is get the money. Okay now I’m confused.
Five criminals + A big jackpot + A few obstacles = A funny movie.
This type of movie ...

What can I say, you will look at the trailer for this film and think, oh yes another set of funny clips from an average film (like all of us who saw the trailer for Johnny English and were daft enough to watch the film!). In fact some may think it looks poorly made, the picture and colour quality looks low grade, but thats the idea. Imagine living in the back end of nowhere, how dull and dreary might every-day life seem? There you are. This is not ... ...explosion addicts, this is one for the purists. The film begins with 'lifer' Cosimo played by Luis Guzman (Carlitos Way, Punch Drunk Love, Boogie Nights) confessing to his long term lady Rosalind, Patricia Clarkson (The Green Mile, The Pledge), of his 'bellini', the dinner ticket, the last big job, and asking her to find him a 'mullinski', a fall guy so to speak, who will take the rap for Cosimo's actions, get him off the hook and so free him to ...

DVD Description
A group of petty criminals in Cleveland's East End join forces to rob a jewellery store by breaking through an adjoining wall from an empty apartment. An easy job becomes a nightmare when a beautiful woman moves into the apartment, ruining their plans. COLLINWOOD paints a tragically impoverished netherworld of Cleveland's East Side. Quirky career criminals Pero (Sam Rockwell), Basil (Andrew Davoli), and Toto (Michael Jeter), crawl around in burnt-out buildings speaking their own kind of cross-cultural language, passed on by generations of ex-cons. WELCOME TO COLLINWOOD is a physical comedy wrapped in a rich and enigmatic visual package from directors Anthony and Joseph Russo. It includes references to old-time vaudeville, silent film hi-jinks, and grubby antiheroes similar to those of O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU and RAISING ARIZONA. The film uses an impressive array of talented actors including William H. Macy, Sam Rockwell, Isaiah Washington, and George Clooney, who produced this film with Steven Soderbergh. Excellent, touching performances by Patricia Clarkson, Gabrielle Union, and Jennifer Esposito also add to the film's cohesive group dynamic.
