I like comedy. Despite making me laugh, it creates a unique air of happiness that is unrivalled by all other forms of entertainment. So, logically, something that makes me laugh a lot consistently, is likely to get a big tick in the Ian Book of Good Things. And that, of course, is always good.
You'll be quite pleased to know that Wayne's World has attained such a personal accolade on my part, and the tick is scored into the page so hard it shows up on most of the following pages. Yes, it IS that good. Why am I talking rubbish? Well, it made a decent intro now didn't it? OK, so I'm tired and my imagination isn't quite up to scratch, but I'm sure I'll pull through.
Wayne's World is a top class comedy film from 1992, starring (amongst others) the now-(in)famous Mike Myers, and the not-so-well-know Dana Carvey. And yes, I always though Dana was a girl's name, but there you go! But whereas Carvey had been in films before, this was the big break for funnyman Mike Myers. Having previously worked on America's top rated Saturday Night Live show, it wasn't until he though up a top class sketch that things really started for Myers. Most people don't know that Wayne's World started off life as one of Myers' sketches on the show, but it did, and someone evidently picked up on it's potential and it all snowballed from there. As such, Myers' co-wrote the script, so he works well with the material he knows so well.
- "We're not mental or anything, so don't be afraid"
The plot of Wayne's World revolved around the two lead characters Wayne
Campbell (Myers) and Garth Algar (Carvey) and their little-known 'public access' cable show – the eponymous Wayne's World. Wayne and Garth sit in Wayne's basement on a setee, and film their show about completely random stuff, including who their 'babe' of the moment is, and the latest new inventions, like the vacuum cleaner that cuts your hair, the Suck Cut ("Turn it off! It's sucking my will to live!"). Well, one day TV exec Benjamin Oliver (Rob Lowe) is watching TV in bed with his glamorous girlfriend when she spots a show she finds really funny. Oliver spots a show ripe for exploitation, so he buys it up as soon as possible. Most of the rest of the film (well, the bits that run along to the plot anyway) revolves around Wayne and Garth battling the big network, and Wayne trying to keep Oliver's hands off his newly found girlfriend Cassandra (Tia Carrere).
- "We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"
So what is so funny about Wayne's World? Well, it's quite different from a lot of comedy films you may have seen before, because it only has a loose structure. This probably derives from the fact that it was originally a series of sketches, but it works a lot better than you might have thought. It's these moments of complete randomness add a unique character to the film that is unrivalled by most of it's peers. Like when Wayne and Garth are lying on the bonnet of a car just outside the airport while planes take off. Or when T-1000 comes up to Wayne's car and asks him about the kid out of Terminator. Or the classic scene with the guys headbanging to Bohemian Rhapsody – a classic scene of our time.
As well as the randomness of the film, there's also Myers' inate ability to parody anything and everything – even the film itself. And I love a bit of self-parody. This is particularly evident in the scene's where it flashes up subtitles like 'Oscar Clip' and 'Gratuitious Sex Scene', and the whole sketch about advertising where the guys talk about how everything seems to have advertising in it these days, while advertising a number of products!
Wayne: I can't talk about it anymore, it's giving me a headache. Garth: Here, take two of these. Wayne: Ahh, Nuprin. Little, yellow, different.
There are references to all areas of pop culture in Wayne's World, bands, films, even people continually playing 'Stairway To Heaven' when testing electric guitars ("No Stairway! Denied!"). It's all these things that add to the unique charm of the whole Wayne's World experience.
- "You're amazing dude"
As well as managing to take a small sketch and turn it into a huge film, somehow Myers managed to get a load of top celebrities to cameo in the film. You'll find Alice Cooper and his band getting all philosophical with Wayne and Garth (who are grovelling at his feet), and you'll also find Meat Loaf playing the security guard 'Tiny' at the rock club.
- "Sch-wing!"
Wayne's World is one of those films that influenced a whole generation – I'm sure most people my age have fond memories of both this and 'Bill & Ted', and it's one of those films that has a habit of spawning a hundred and one catchphrases while are repeated until you want to kill the next person you hear utter the words. "Excellent" is the obvious one, although that comes more from Bill & Ted than from Wayne's World. Then you've got 'Sch-wing', 'Party on' and 'AssSphincterSaysWhat". OK, so they might sound daft now, but at the time…
- Things you probably didn't know about Wayne's World
As I was researching for this film (my memory is terrible :( ), I found out a couple of interesting things about Wayne's World that most people wouldn't realise. OK, so I only found out one thing, but it's better than nothing, isn't it?
In the scene where Wayne and Garth are lying on the car bonnet waiting for the plane to come over, the plane was actually late, and, off the top of his head Carvey (Garth) asks Wayne "Did you ever find Bugs Bunny attractive when he put on a dress and played a girl bunny?". Myers' laughing reaction is genuine here, and the director though it was great and kept the line in. Well there you go – learn a new thing every day don't you?
- "I say puke. If you hurl and she comes back, she's yours."
Well, of course there has to be some bad things about the film. The plot is thinner than the paper it was written on for a start, and if you're not totally up on pop culture (remember – this is American pop culture too), then they'll be some jokes that might leave you wondering what the joke IS. The kind of situation where you know there's a joke, you're just not quite getting it. That can be quite irritating at times, but I suppose we're all used to it by now.
- "It will be mine. Oh yes. It will be mine."
That's the Wayne's World way of saying get this now! This is what I would term a classic film. It's funny, it's witty, and yet it isn't just funny in a 'wacky' way – some of the jokes are a little more complex, and this is to Myers' credit. While the plot isn't brilliant, this isn't all that noticeable, as you spend too much of your time laughing to really care anyway. All the little sketches and one-liners add up to a great film which proves the old adage "Less is more" – less structure, more comedy. Great. I guess there's only one thing left to say:
Comedy - Original Language: English - Classification: 12 years and over - Starring: Tessa Peake-Jones, Buster Merryfield, David Jason, Nicholas Lyndhurst
I have the Waynes World box set, i had to buy the original Waynes Wolrd as the quailty of the video became distorted due to the amount of times i watched it. Excellent opinion!

As much as I should have a 'proper' film as my fave, I have to say that it is in fact Wayne's world. I think the sequel is just as good. Seen it hundreds of times and it never fails to amuse me. It possibly gets funnier. Great op for a great film.

Yes! Waynes World! Bill&Ted! Aaaah! Brilliant! We used to say all sorts of crap including 'Ch-Chiiiiing!' (money sound) and 'if you're gonna spew, spew into this!' Oh how sad we were. :o) Ruth.
