Black Hawk Down (2001) It’s 1993, Somalia, a large east African country. Delta Squad, one of America’s elite army ranger units, is preparing for a smash and grab mission to capture two high ranking enemy officials. To do so they must enter the most hostile district in the capital, Mogadishu. Over 100 troops enter the city by via armoured vehicle and black hawk helicopters. When John Woo has a go at directing a film set during the second world war you can bet it will be packed with action from start to finish, and low and behold this film has exactly that. The story follows the efforts of marines who's mission it is to protect Navjo Indians recruited into the war to use military code based on the Navajo language. The marines protect the code by protecting the man and the story therefore allows for selfless feats of ...
...Nicolas Cage. Don't expect any anti-war messages here but do expect to be thrilled by some great battle scenes with slow motion sequences that have become a trademark in John Woo movies. The story is not particularly strong nor do I expect it was intended to be, but the action makes up for any shortcomings in the plot. I am very much a war film buff and upon the release of this, went to see it in the cinema. Absolutely loved it, so when it was shown on the television, I stayed up late to watch it. I again thought it was stunning and saw it as a film that I could not get enough of. So I went out to purchase the DVD. I noticed the two disc special, so I went ahead and bought that. Advantages: nonstop action, good story, genuine feel for what happened
Disadvantages: bit too much "hero" stuff, patriotism

...horribly wrong when the first Black Hawk helicopter goes down in a crowded area in downtown Mogadishu. In an attempt to rescue the first Black Hawk a second chopper tries to go down and, while dispersing a group of Rangers and Delta Force units, gets shot at. This Black Hawk also crashes. The downed Rangers and Delta Force units try to find a hiding place while at the main camp a truck unit gets ordered to go to the first chopper to check for injured. ...
...this movie are when the Black Hawks get shot down, a comment made by the main truck pilot Lt. Col Danny Knight (Tom Sizemore)about the way that the spotter unit for the trucks is up in their chopper while the trucks are all in the firing line, when a soldier gets shot so badly he needs to be helped directly (not for the faint hearted !)resulting in his death and the running of the soldiers across the borderline while being fired at with machine guns ...
