A film for life, not just watching at Christmas!

Advantages: Everything, seeing Steve McQueen lots is a bonus =]
Disadvantages: none!

...of this movie but never the whole film, I decided to buy it on DVD. I bought it as part of a 'Great Films Starring Steve McQueen' box set. What an investment! Produced in 1963, this DVD is based on a true story of a group of Allied P.O.W's who planned an escape from an 'escape proof' camp. This was the largest planned Allied escape attempt from a German POW camp. This film features some famous names such as: Steve McQueen James Garner Charles ...
...The first half of the film focuses on various escape attempts made by the POWs, as well of the planning of the escape and digging the tunnels, Tom, Dick, and Harry. This half of the film is quite comedic, and the characters work well together. The second half of the film follows the escape of the prisoners, and follows their various journeys as they try and get back to Britain safely. It is much more dramatic than the first half, and is quite fast ...

A rather good movie with a poor counterpart

Advantages: What did Marlone Brando like when he was young
Disadvantages: Poor story for D-Day: 6th June

I think this double pack edition of D-Day and The Young Lions is only worth buying but only for The Young Lions. The DVD comes with no special features, no card inlay to tell you about the movies or anything else remotely resembling information except what is on the cover. But at around £6 in the shops what do you expect. I can't I rave about either film because they are not classics and both are stories set in the second world war but neither of ...
...- Marlon Brando - as younger, fitter model compared to his later movies (Godfather, and Apocalypse Now). This film is very much the better out of the two - it has a story line vaguely linked to the second world war and there are a few more action scene (and more realistic than D-Day). Its a B&W film but this doesn't matter because we get to see Brando do some fine acting in this film - I think it was his first 'big movie' or certainly one of the ...

A Classic War Film!

Advantages: Really interesting, based on a true story, exciting, good acting
Disadvantages: None

...Only Review Watching the Great Escape on Sky Anytime last night I thought I had to review it. This movie is based on a book by Paul Brickhill who actually was in the camp in March 1944! The film is therefore based on true events but there are some inaccuracies so you should not believe everything that happens in the film! The film was made in 1963 but is still on every Christmas! The Great Escape is set in World War 2 and begins with the P.O.W ...
...high security. The idea is to have "all the rotten eggs in one basket" so they can all be kept inside this one impossible to escape camp! You see the prisoners of war in the camp and follow their escape plan. They want to be as much nuisance to the Germans as possible wasting their time, money and men! There plan is to get over 250 men out of the camp out of tunnels. You get to see how they manage to dig the tunnels, trick guards, get various things ...

Dam Busters

Advantages: great film, based on a true story, low flying sequences
Disadvantages: some special effects

...produce war material to fight the Germans. But Barnes Wallis (Michael Redgrave), a British scientist, has an idea to shorten the war. He believes that if a bomb (that has not been developed yet) is released from an aircraft doing a certain speed from a certain height then that bomb will bounce on the surface of the water hitting the wall of a Dam, where it will sink to a predetermined depth and then explode using the force of the water to breach ...
...and therefore severely damaging the German war effort. This could be a crazy scientist's pipe dream, but this movie is in fact the true story of how the bouncing bomb was conceived and developed culminating in the execution of Operation Chastise which was the mission to destroy the Möhne, Sorpe and the Eder Dam's in an attempt to cripple Germany's ability to make war. The reality was that although two of the Dams were breached, output was back to ...

British War Films Collection

Advantages: An excellent selection of vintage war films, perfect for an avid fan of war films, such as myself. Also ideal for anyone who wants to get a taste of this genre.
Disadvantages: May have been better to replace 'The Cruel Sea' with a more classic film such 'The Great Escape' or 'The Guns of Navorone'.

This collection is an excellent selection of vintage war films. Perfect for anyone who enjoys this genre. The Dambuster and The Colditz story are of particular interest to me as they are true stories. Which are portrayed very well in the respective films. The good thing about this being the 'British' war film collection is that there is the absence of the 'american touch'. By this I mean the story hasn't been adapted from the truth in order to satisfy ...
...your a watching as you know what is being showed actually happened. The Cruel Sea is a collaboration of many different seamens experinces during WW2, and shows an excellent portrayal of what these brave men had to endure. However I am a sucker for true stories, so although this story is not unrealistic, i would have preffered a true story such as maybe The Great Escape or The Bridge on The River Kwai. Ice Cold in Alex is of course a classic war film ...
