Above us the Waves
Review of Above Us The Waves DVD by kreff1110

Advantages: good old fashioned Britsh humour
Disadvantages: I really cant think of any

This film has to up there with the classics, because it really is a good bit of cinema. It follows the story of a British crew that attempt to destroy a German warship known as the 'Tirpitz'. They use 1-2 man-operated sub's to carry out there mission. If you look at war films of this time, you have two categories. The first is War films that were made during the war, where you had to bare witness to all the injected propaganda, such as 'Millions ...
...The Wave’ falls into the post-WW2, which means it focuses more on the front line war hero. It has a well mixed blend of humour and entertainment, when the crew train and banter each other, as well as having some very dark and suspenseful scenes, particularly when the mini sub's are in action. All in all I loved this, even if it is an old film. ... Read review

Ice Cold in Alex
Review of Ice Cold In Alex DVD by Senter104

Advantages: Simply a great film
Disadvantages: Cant really think of any

Another outstanding piece of British Cinema. John Mills plays a Captain charged with getting his ambulance through enemy held desert to Alexandria. He is joined by his Sergeant Major and a couple of female nurses. During the trip they pick up a 'South African' Officer (Anthony Quayle) left behind by his unit during the retreat. The story outlines the trials and hurdles the hardy group face in getting their ambulance back to Alexandria all the while ...
...Matters are complicated by John Mills alcohol problem and Anthony Quayle's seemingly endless supply of Gin. Some of the highlights of the film include the dramatic attempt at 'cranking' the ambulance up a steep slope (makes you sweat just watching it) and the subsequent release of the crank handle by the nurse (not even going to mention women drivers). You can almost see their hearts break as the ambulance hurtles down the slope. Anthony Quayle's ... Read review

Something For The Weekend
Review of Ice Cold In Alex DVD by RSH123

Advantages: Fabulously Entertaining, You HAVE To See What Happens Next! Classic
Disadvantages: None that I can say

...have you reaching for an ice cold lager - it'll also have you with trembling lip and wishing they made more films like this. Grit, determination and strong character shine through. This is a film totally devoid of gratuitous sex and violence - I think the strongest piece of language you'll hear is something like an innocuous "damn" or maybe a "bloody"....it certainly gets no stronger than that! I haven't described much of the action of this film....that's ... Read review

British War Films Collection
Review of British War DVD Collection DVD by kozy_uk

Advantages: An excellent selection of vintage war films, perfect for an avid fan of war films, such as myself. Also ideal for anyone who wants to get a taste of this genre.
Disadvantages: May have been better to replace 'The Cruel Sea' with a more classic film such 'The Great Escape' or 'The Guns of Navorone'.

This collection is an excellent selection of vintage war films. Perfect for anyone who enjoys this genre. The Dambuster and The Colditz story are of particular interest to me as they are true stories. Which are portrayed very well in the respective films. The good thing about this being the 'British' war film collection is that there is the absence of the 'american touch'. By this I mean the story hasn't been adapted from the truth in order to satisfy ...
...your a watching as you know what is being showed actually happened. The Cruel Sea is a collaboration of many different seamens experinces during WW2, and shows an excellent portrayal of what these brave men had to endure. However I am a sucker for true stories, so although this story is not unrealistic, i would have preffered a true story such as maybe The Great Escape or The Bridge on The River Kwai. Ice Cold in Alex is of course a classic war film ... Read review

Ryans awesome!
Review of Saving Private Ryan DVD by atytyut2434

Advantages: Looks & Sounds great
Disadvantages: A Tad Gorey

I saw this with my 3 brothers when it was released. It was the first time i've ever sat all the way through and not uttered a sound until the film was finished. That's saying something. the film was incredible in the cinema. Next watching was on DVD. the whole film all the way through with no breaks. again, the film was awesome. And today i've just seen it again on the TV. The film does get better each time I see it. I notice more and more things, ...
...me. Hanks salutes his superior when he goes for his "find Ryan" briefing but his translator is chastised for doing the same, why? The men that don't spot the Panzerfaust leaning against the wall when their trying to stop the 25mm gun from flanking them. It's right there in plain view in the middle of the screen leaning against a wall and not one of 4 men spotted it. This time I did see Ted Danson and that Vin Diesel. Second time in a week for the ... Read review
