Reviews of War »

Historic facts, oh its just a war movie.

Advantages: Robert Shaw, action, good realism
Disadvantages: Hollywoodised story complete with history rewritten, ( again )

The Battle of the Bulge ( or The Battle of the Ardennes as it was really called ) was the last major offensive ever mounted by Hitler in the second world war and was one of the biggest battles the US forces ever fought. It was also the only battle where the US army suffered a defeat ( be it a short one ) and also the first time they were really pushed back and if Hitlers plan had been a little bit more realsitic, he might well have extended the war ...
...these were veterans and very battle hardened troops, in additional, although many units did retreat, a lot of them stood their ground and this held up the Germans and even though they were completely surrounded and outnumbered, these units caused major delays and some very heavy casulties to the Germans, worse still they caused them to use a lot of fuel and ammunition which they could not afford. However, the allies did have some major fuel dumps ...

You will watch this over and over again.

Advantages: A Brilliant Plot with a Brilliant All Star Cast
Disadvantages: None

...great sound track, suspense. The plot is esentially that a group of WWII military hard nut lifers banged up in military prisons are given a chance of a full pardon if they accept a dangerous mission behind enemy lines in France. Of course the catch is that it is somewhat of a suicide mission, .......or is it? There are some vague similarities between this film and The Magnificent Seven in as much as you have a group of main characters each with their ...
...more believable plot and The Magnificent Seven was in my opinion more of a vehicle for individual actors to "show boat" in their roles. One actor common to both films is Charles Bronson. In this film there is a rare opportunity to see Telly Savalas with hair! The best moment of the film for me is when Donald Sutherland laughs at having put one over on an inspecting General who has "had the wool pulled over his eyes" by the Dirty Dozen crew. This ...

When Men were Men

Advantages: A classic war, action movie
Disadvantages: Very thin storyline

Synopsis *********** Set during the second World War, rebellious Major John Reisman (Lee Marvin) is facing disciplinary action for his attitude but is given an opportunity to escape the impending punishment if he agrees to take on a very peculiar mission. Reluctantly he is put in charge of a mission to pick 12 soldiers facing the death penalty in prison and to train them up for what is effectively a suicide mission to destroy a chateau where prominent ...
...back and escape than complete the mission. Opinion ********* Certain films over the years seem to become perennial favourites of TV, films such as "Star Wars" and "The Great Escape" always seem to be on the screen and so is the fact with "The Dirty Dozen". Set in World War II, the film is predominantly aimed at a male audience with copious amounts of action, although it is still very popular with female audiences. Unlike many war films which rely ...

Inglorious Tarantino Nonesense

Advantages: Tarantino making grown up films
Disadvantages: Still not back to his best

If ever a director has suffered a steep decline from the very summit of Hollywood its Quentin Tarantino. How did we get from Pulp Fiction to Death Proof?? He didn't even have time to plant his flag pole he slid down the other side that fast. What on Earth was that self parody Kill Bill nonsense all about! The geeky ex video store worker who dreamed of becoming an actor but burdened with a face for radio (even Morse code) astounded the independent ...
...uber cool Reservoir Dogs and became the darling of the European film circuit with Pulp Fiction. But since then I have struggled with nearly everything he's done, dare I say it I'm almost bored with the film genius of the reported owner of a 151 I.Q, his Muppet Show yapping mouth going on about the nuance of film somewhat irritating now. With Inglorious Basterds I think he too knows his best days may have passed and this is an attempt to woo back ...

One of the best films ever, must buy!

Advantages: Great story, amazing acting, superb film
Disadvantages: None

Ever since seeing this film i have been dying to own this film and its finally on dvd. A modern classic of a film and such a typical Tarintino film. From the opening scene this movie has you engrossed and the two and a half hours it lasts for fly past. The acting is superb from some little known actors and having only one big name like Brad Pitt sets it off brilliantly. Very rarely do you see a somewhat pro jewish war film, most are just protraying ...
