A film for life, not just watching at Christmas!

Advantages: Everything, seeing Steve McQueen lots is a bonus =]
Disadvantages: none!

...of this movie but never the whole film, I decided to buy it on DVD. I bought it as part of a 'Great Films Starring Steve McQueen' box set. What an investment! Produced in 1963, this DVD is based on a true story of a group of Allied P.O.W's who planned an escape from an 'escape proof' camp. This was the largest planned Allied escape attempt from a German POW camp. This film features some famous names such as: Steve McQueen James Garner Charles ...
...The first half of the film focuses on various escape attempts made by the POWs, as well of the planning of the escape and digging the tunnels, Tom, Dick, and Harry. This half of the film is quite comedic, and the characters work well together. The second half of the film follows the escape of the prisoners, and follows their various journeys as they try and get back to Britain safely. It is much more dramatic than the first half, and is quite fast ...

...Donald Pleasence Released in the summer of 1963 this near three hour movie, based on some true events, depicts the lives of many Prisoners of War incarcerated in a German POW camp, Stalag Luft III, during the second world war, revealing the many escapes which were planned and executed, sometimes successfully, but mostly failures… This movie is based on the factual book by Paul Brickhill, who was actually in the camp and helped out with the preparations ...
...taking part in the escape itself. ** BRIEF PLOT ** Stalag Luft III is a high security prisoners of war camp which, according to commandant Colonel Von Luger, (played by Hannes Messemer), is escape proof, so it is filled with prisoners who have previously escaped from various other prisons… but to house that many professional escapees in one place is just asking for trouble… When Squadron leader Roger Bartlett, (played by Richard Attenborough), ...

Classic desert drama and one of the best films MIlls ever made

Advantages: Lots of action, great performances
Disadvantages: Made on a low budget, a little dated

...beer commercial. Fact is that Ice Cold In Alex is one of the best war films ever made. "Ice Cold" is the beer and "Alex" is Alexandria, the Egyptian city where Desert Rats hung out during World War Two. The film was made in 1958 and Mills was 50-odd at the time which is probably why he was cast as an ambulance driver fleeing the batle of Tobruk rather than a young blade. The film caused great controversy at the time as his romantic interest was a ...
...as they say, a ripping yarn with John Mills excellent as usual But it's very much an ensemble piece and deserves its classic status. In an age where special effects and gadgetry take precedence over narrative and emotional depth, Ice Cold In Alex stands the test of time. ...

A Classic War Film!

Advantages: Really interesting, based on a true story, exciting, good acting
Disadvantages: None

...Only Review Watching the Great Escape on Sky Anytime last night I thought I had to review it. This movie is based on a book by Paul Brickhill who actually was in the camp in March 1944! The film is therefore based on true events but there are some inaccuracies so you should not believe everything that happens in the film! The film was made in 1963 but is still on every Christmas! The Great Escape is set in World War 2 and begins with the P.O.W ...
...high security. The idea is to have "all the rotten eggs in one basket" so they can all be kept inside this one impossible to escape camp! You see the prisoners of war in the camp and follow their escape plan. They want to be as much nuisance to the Germans as possible wasting their time, money and men! There plan is to get over 250 men out of the camp out of tunnels. You get to see how they manage to dig the tunnels, trick guards, get various things ...

The Eagle Has Landed (1977)

Advantages: A great film, with great performances.
Disadvantages: The action is directed near the end of the film.

The Eagle Has Landed (1977) It is 1943, and Mussillini has just been rescued from a mountain top prison in Italy by a daring German commando raid. Now Hitler wants Winston Churchill kidnapped. From the pen of Jack Higgins, the film puts you straight into the depths of Nazi Germany and the story of how Colonel Kurt Steiner (MIchael Caine), Liam Delvin (Donald Sutherland) and 15 German paratroopers desend into the quiet English countryside to carry ...
...a battle scarred survivor of the Russian Front that is now the brains behind the mission. A young Jenny Agutter, who provides the love interest for Donald Sutherland as a young nieve country girl. There is a classic casting of Larry Hagman as Colonel Pitts and his fellow American officer, Captain Clarke, played by Treat Williams. All in all, this is a great film, providing the viewer with thrills, action, interigue and even a small love interest. ...
