Great War Movies-The Dirty Dozen.
Review of The Dirty Dozen (DVD) by
cyberian1969
Advantages: Great performances, Lee Marvin, superb dramatic tension
Disadvantages: Goof ups in depicting war games
The 60's was a period when we had great war flicks like Where Eagles Dare, The Dirty Dozen, Guns of Navaronne, The Great Escape, The Longest Day to name a few. My dad was a lover of such movies, and he would take me along as a kid, and that's how I grew up loving such cinema. Dirty Dozen is a typical lets get together guys and go on a mission, spot the star World War II movies which appeared regularly during that period. But this is one movie which ... ...and superb pacing.
With the advent of D-Day, the US Army has come up with a plan to interrupt German chain of command. Raid a secluded mansion where most of the high ranking Nazi officers come to party with their mistresses and kill every one there. It's a suicidal operation, and so the army decides to make use of convicted criminals who are either on death row or facing life imprisonment. It's a win win situation, if they die, they would have the ...

A hidden gem of the war film world
Review of Force 10 From Navarone (DVD) by
pmcds
Advantages: Plot, acting and keeps you watching
Disadvantages: Confusing if you're not up on war history
Force 10 From Navarone is based on the book of the same name by author Alistair MacLean as is the sequel to The Guns of Navarone, the immensely popular film starring Gregory Peck and David Niven. Force 10 was released in 1978, and features some famous names and a powerful script cast onto the screen. The film didn't do as well as it should have, but is still a quality film.
Following the successful destruction of the guns of Navarone, survivors ... ...a spy named Nicolai, who they had come across briefly in their previous mission. They are the key to the mission, as they are perhaps the only ones who can identify him. Older than they were in the first mission, Nicolai has grown from a boy to a man, and is now believed to be masterminding a sabotage operation under the guise of allied lieutenant Lescovar (Franco Nero). The experienced soldiers are joined by a selection of American soldiers, led ...

The best war film ever!
Review of The Thin Red Line (DVD) by
bibisk
Advantages: great story, real heroism, great direction
Disadvantages: no dis
The greatest war film I have ever seen! When my friend forced me to watch it I wanted to cry, because I dont like the wars and blood. From the early beginning we though it is documentary film as it starts with talking and showing some tribes life with two soldiers. It seemed to me quite strange but so interesting that I had to watch further. After nice pictures of life in wild nature the scene was disturbed by big war ship and the soldiers fall into ... ...afraid of. The film started to show soldiers in situation before war, their thoughts and feelings. Some were strong enough to show the fear, but some of them were on the edge of desperation...
The film is pretty long, tooks around 2 hours and 35 minutes, so there are many things which happens and the soldiers must go through the long long far from easy way, many of them die, get hurt, make wrong decision or make something great. I have never seen ...

Kokoda: 39th Battalion, a good war film.
Review of Kokoda - 39th Battalion (DVD) by
paulhanton
Advantages: Gritty and moving.
Disadvantages: Slow.
...Paupua New Guinea, called the Kokoda trail. Their job is to stop the Japanese infiltrating the trail and coming closer to invading North Australia....look on a map, it really is quite close.
The group of men come under constant attack, run out of food, low on ammunition, and are exhausted. Amongst the group are two brothers who become quite central to the plot.
I won't give away any more of the plot other than to say it shows the absolute worst ... ...the best in man.
~~~Cinematography and directing~~~
It is slow, and I think that is intended as war is not all gun ho and running around. Whilst set in steamy rain forests, it has a ditinct trench warfare feel about it, and whilst set in the 2nd World War, it is reminiscent of the 1st.
The cinematography is excellent, much of it is at night which is hard to film well, and much of it is in rain and mud. The scenery is magnificent.
The music is ...
The Great Escape
Review of The Great Escape (Definitive Edition) (DVD) by
blissman70
Advantages: Thrilling adventure from the past
Disadvantages: none
...Donald Pleasence
Released in the summer of 1963 this near three hour movie, based on some true events, depicts the lives of many Prisoners of War incarcerated in a German POW camp, Stalag Luft III, during the second world war, revealing the many escapes which were planned and executed, sometimes successfully, but mostly failures…
This movie is based on the factual book by Paul Brickhill, who was actually in the camp and helped out with the preparations ... ...taking part in the escape itself.
** BRIEF PLOT ** Stalag Luft III is a high security prisoners of war camp which, according to commandant Colonel Von Luger, (played by Hannes Messemer), is escape proof, so it is filled with prisoners who have previously escaped from various other prisons… but to house that many professional escapees in one place is just asking for trouble…
When Squadron leader Roger Bartlett, (played by Richard Attenborough), ...
