A film for life, not just watching at Christmas!
Advantages: Everything, seeing Steve McQueen lots is a bonus =] Disadvantages: none!
...of this movie but never the whole film, I decided to buy it on DVD. I bought it as part of a 'Great Films Starring Steve McQueen' box set. What an investment!
Produced in 1963, this DVD is based on a true story of a group of Allied P.O.W's who planned an escape from an 'escape proof' camp. This was the largest planned Allied escape attempt from a German POW camp.
This film features some famous names such as:
Steve McQueen
James Garner
Charles ... ...The first half of the film focuses on various escape attempts made by the POWs, as well of the planning of the escape and digging the tunnels, Tom, Dick, and Harry. This half of the film is quite comedic, and the characters work well together.
The second half of the film follows the escape of the prisoners, and follows their various journeys as they try and get back to Britain safely. It is much more dramatic than the first half, and is quite fast ...

"All our ignorance brings us closer to death."
Advantages: Superb action Disadvantages: Politically and emotionally empty
Black Hawk Down (2001)
It’s 1993, Somalia, a large east African country. Delta Squad, one of America’s elite army ranger units, is preparing for a smash and grab mission to capture two high ranking enemy officials. To do so they must enter the most hostile district in the capital, Mogadishu. Over 100 troops enter the city by via armoured vehicle and black hawk helicopters. All is going to plan until a soldier is wounded and their progress slowed. ... ...the foot soldiers. When one Black Hawk is shot down they must move to help any survivors further complicating the operation. It quickly becomes clear that they will be stuck in these streets a lot longer than the planned half an hour. Ridley Scott (Bladerunner, Gladiator) directs the action – and there is an awful lot of it. For action junkies this is a pure shot of adrenalin, but others may find it too quick and to follow in the initial scenes of ...

Pass The Dutchie
Advantages: Watchable, entertaining and well-acted film Disadvantages: None
Dutch cinema has, no disrespect, never quite taken the world of celluloid by storm. Its most successful director is unarguably Paul Verhoeven who hit the big-time with films such as Basic Instinct, RoboCop and Starship Troopers. The best-known actor has to be Rutger Hauer who came to fame as the android in Blade Runner, was a fearsome baddie in The Hitcher and has gone on to build a successful career from then, known in this country as well for the ... ...personalities shared a billing are therefore emblematic as far as the Dutch are concerned, and of no little interest to the rest of us.
"Solder of Orange" (Soldaat van Oranje), the thirdd film which falls into this category, is a 1977 movie set during the Second World War but its appeal goes beyond lovers of the genre, indeed anyone expecting major battle scenes will be disappointed. It tells the story of a group of friends at the University of ...

The One That Got Away
Advantages: the film turns the generic convention of escaped prisoner on its head Disadvantages: some scenes look dated
The One That Got Away shows Germans in a sympathetic - even heroic - light, only a dozen years after WWII had ended. It also makes for an interesting exercise in the power of cinema. Despite bitter postwar feelings it must have been hard for Allied audiences not to root for the `enemy' POW trying to escape back to his homeland. And how many British films of that time would have gambled with a German actor as its leading man? As it happened, this ... ...to a POW camp in the Lake District. His tenacious escape attempts throughout the remainder of the film make for compelling viewing. He tries so hard that you'll really want him to succeed, especially by the end (in a sequence I find quite surreal) when he is half-frozen and can't seem to manage another step. ...
