My wife really wanted to go and see this recently at the cinema using our unlimited card - I was a bit reluctant as the trailers didn't show it to be all that great and I had heard a rumour that there was supposed to be no talking in it what so ever! This had also put me off slightly but considering that we didn't have to technically pay to see it and if we didn't like it we could just go and see another film a little bit later I agreed to give it a shot!
The plot - Wall E is a robot that was created to clear up rubbish in the world created by the huge corporation 'Buy N Large' - along with the rest of the robots created the idea was for them to clear the junk that humans have ended up covering the Earth's surface with. There was a massive space ship created to enable all humans to live with all the latest gadgets and gizmos out in space until Earth was cleaned up and life could return to normal. However it has been many, many, years since the humans left to live aboard the spaceship and Wall E is the only robot left
of his kind still in operation and so every day he goes about clearing up rubbish and then goes to his 'home' - a rundown vehicle that he has decorated with lights and trinkets he has found over the years. He is used to be on his own apart from his pet cockroach until one day a space ship deposits a more modern robot on Earth that has come to look for sustainable life forms. This is Eve and Wall E is transfixed by her following her around everywhere.
One day he shows her his home and this is where he gives Eve a plant he found - this is where trouble starts as this is what Eve has been sent to look for and so she goes into a state of 'shutdown' until the spaceship comes back for her. Wall E in an attempt to chase after her ends up on the spaceship carrying all the humans and chaos ensues as Eve and Wall E try to get the plant to where it is supposed to go so that the spaceship can return all the humans back to Earth!
The cast: Obviously this is a cartoon film so there is no 'cast' as such but, there are actors who do the voices and sounds of the characters. The main 4 we really have a connection with in the film are:
Wall E - The voice of Wall E is done by a man named Ben Burt who actually produced the sound of Wall E's voice using computer technology. He is a sound and character voice designer and has worked on many films that involve computer sounds such as Star Wars.
Eve - Elissa Knight who works at Pixar as an assistant producer did the voice for Eve but was originally just a test voice until a star was brought in to record. However, writer and director Andrew Stanton liked her so much he decided to use her voice instead. Ben Burt who did all of Wall E then modified her voice to sound more robotic. She has also done the voice of Tia in Cars.
Captain B. McCrea - This is the main animated person in the film and captain of the ship carrying all the humans out in space. He plays a vital role in getting the spaceship back to Earth as he has never even been on Earth himself and is curious to discover his planet. The voice of the captain is done by Jeff Garlin who is an American comedian, producer and director.
Shelby Forthright - This is the only character in the film that actually appears as non animation. He is the CEO of Buy N Large and we see him in a film clip played on the space ship to the captain. This role is played by Fred Willard who has appeared in many American sitcoms such as Married with children, Roseanne and Everybody loves Raymond.
Overall opinion:
I didn't expect much from this film but, in all honestly it was really, really good! It does start off a bit slow as we see just Wall E roaming around on his own but the attention to detail in the scenes are really good - especially in his home he has created. I can thankfully confirm that there is speaking during the film which was the main thing that had been worrying me! The storyline is good and really has a point to make that we should all learn from about recycling more. The story appeals to children and adults alike and contains enough humour to keep you interested in the usual Pixar/Disney way but, at the same time children find it fun due to the cartoon element. In particular I enjoyed the whole way Wall E was made to resemble a person who has feelings even though that as a robot he is not supposed to have this element! I even found myself muttering 'Awwwww' at one point that was particularly sad which I didn't expect to find myself doing at a children's film!!
Directed by Andrew Stanton, Wall E is rated 'U' and is still showing in UK cinemas.
