Wait Until Dark [DVD] [1968] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

Audrey Hepburn's last Oscar nomination was for this adaptation of Frederick Knott's famed ... more

stage thriller about a blind woman, a con man
(Alan Arkin), and a doll full of heroin. Thanks to
Hepburn's husband, a photographer who does a good
deal of travelling, she's unknowingly comeinto
possession of said doll, which was given to him on
a plane by a comely young drug runner who winds up
dead. The murderous Arkin, aided by sympathetic
henchman Richard Crenna, will let nothing stand in
the way of his obtaining it, even if it comes down
to assaying multiple "personalities" in order to
visit and terrorise Hepburn; Crenna is unwillingly
enlisted to help. However, the "world's champion
blind lady" (as Hepburn sardonically states) is
more than up to the task of defending herself in
her basement Manhattan apartment in a
heart-stopping climax that to this day still
defines the way horror movies with jack-in-the-box
psychos are made. Despite the obvious staginess of
it all (the entire action takes place in Hepburn's
apartment), it still works magnificently, thanks
to Hepburn's steely will and Arkin's deadly,
sadistic madman. A helpful hint: turn out all the
lights when you watch it; theatres back in 1967
did so, killing the guiding lights during the
film's last 15 minutes. We can't tell you why,but
trust us, it's worth it. --Mark Englehart,

Why Wait Until Dark?

Advantages: Audrey Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn
Disadvantages: none really

.../> ~*~

Wait Until Dark was released in 1968 and starred Audrey Hepburn as Susy, Alan Arkin as Roat, Richard Crenna as Mike, with support from Jack Weston as Carlino, Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Sam and Julie Herrod as Gloria. It was originally a play by writer Frederick Knott which opened on Broadway in February 1966. Julie Herrod played Gloria in the theatre version as well as in the film and Lee Remick was the original Susy in the play.
...even more intense as you wait for him to show his true colours but when he does, it's not in quite the way I imagined. I've never been a big fan of Crenna in the past, but I really liked him in this role. Then again, I don't recall seeing him in many films from the 60s - he does look rather dashing in this film so I guess he was a very good choice - his good looks and charisma - made for an all round believable suave small-time crook. It was really ... more

Advantages: excellent viewing
Disadvantages: nil

I had not seen this film for many years and so had some concern about watching it again as I worried if it had aged well. No problems this film is excellent a real gripping tale with good acting. A recent accident leaves a pretty woman blinded, she meets and marries a photographer who travels around and one day brings home a doll with the story of being given it by a young woman at the airport to be collected. And now the story begins her husband ...
...goes out to work, she attends blind school and only has a little help from a young child who lives upstairs in their apartment block. some men want that doll and set about diverting her husband and concieving a elaborate plot to get her to hand it over, she not knowing where it is or what is going on and slowly starts to realise that something is wrong very wrong. with strange men in and out of her flat playing different characters preying on her ...

Return Of The Angel

Advantages: new charcters, even more action, better storylines.
Disadvantages: Abit confusing if you dont follow regularly.

* Return of the Angel * When the second series of Dark Angel was released in 2002 I waited until it came out on DVD and brought it straight away. As being completely glued to the first series the second looked even more action packed and even more intense. The first series ended on such a cliff hanger that the second series jumps straight into the action. On the last episode of the first series Max is captured and taken back to manticore after being shot. Everyone else thinks she's dead but Logan refuses to believe this. I like the way the second series starts everyone else Logan, Cindy, Sketchy are still living their normal lives, everyone thinks Max is gone and the audience did to but then we see Max in manticore. She is back where she escaped from 12 years ago and she rebells taking orders in any form possible. I think starting ...
