INTRODUCTION
NorthCountry is an American drama film, directed by Niki Caro, her other work is the Whale Rider. The film screenplay written by Michael Seitzman, it was based on a book called 'Class Action: The Story of Lois Jenson and the Landmark Case That Changed Sexual Harassment Law' by Clara Bingham and Laura Leedy Gansler which took note of the case of Jenson versus Eveleth Taconite Co.
SETTING
The film is set in Minnesota which is the most northerly state in the USA apart from Alaska, its original mines are now depleted but there are still taconite mines are developed locally to save the industry. The mines have provided work for the community for generations, an industry that is largely dominated by men, where they still have the same view of women as they did in the 40's. Advantages: Great prose, funny and warm hearted - like your archetypal northerner Disadvantages: A little smug in places
book Maconie sets out to discover what the north of England is and what it means to those who live there.
He starts his journey in Crewe, which, after some deliberation, he decides is the "start" of the north. He does most of his travelling by train, something I must admit I admire, as I find it the most civilised mode of transport myself.
He makes a point of talking to people along the way and he manages to transplant conversations and encounters he has into words in a humorous and colourful way.
He doesn't claim to visit everywhere in the north - but he describes the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester. He paints vivid pictures of two mighty cities, strong enough for me to end up visiting both. He describes the new town of Skelmersdale, where he worked briefly as a college lecturer and talks warmly of the people he encountered ...

After Halloween passing and me having had enough of horror films, I decided this time that I wanted a film with a good story but less gore. I decided to look at my film collection and the film I most recently picked out is 'NorthCountry'. After months of staring at the film thinking to myself I wanted to see it I just thought it might be long and intense so I kept putting it off. However, on a long and boring Sunday with nothing else to do and a dead campus I decided a film might take me away from reality for a bit and I think I was finally ready to properly watch this film. I had been told it was really good and I'm sure it had been nominated for awards. Also, Charlize Theron is a good actress so I expected nothing but a decent film.
