I am a big fan of Bret "Hitman" Hart and I have been for many years. I grew up watching him and followed his career at the beginning in WWE (which was WWF at the time) right up until his retirement from wrestling in 2000.
This DVD is a co-production of WWE and Bret Hart. Bret Hart has many personal issues with World Wrestling Entertainment (such as the death of his brother Owen) and for him to put those issues aside for the benefit of the fans is a really good thing.
The main feature of the DVD is a documentary in which Hart and his peers in the wrestling industry take you through his career. The documentary begins with his days as an amatuer wrestler in Calgary and takes you through to his days in Stampede Wrestling, Japan, Stampede Wrestling, the World Wrestling Federation and finally World Championship Wrestling.
In it he discusses many of the major issues throughout his career including the Montreal "Screwjob" in 1997 (in which he was ousted from the company and stripped of the title at a live pay-per-view event), the death of his brother Owen in 1999 from a stunt which went badly wrong and his eventual retirement due to a concussion and stroke which followed.
The documentary part of the DVD is really good although I would have loved to hear some comments from the guys involved in the Montreal Screwjob, like Shawn Michaels, Triple H and Earl Hebner.
While the documentary part is good, the DVD gets pushed into the realms of "excellence" by the special features. Among them are a selection of 18 of Bret's best matches throughout his career. The bonus matches span the last two DVDs of the three-DVD set and part of the first DVD. Hart himself chose all the matches presented on the DVD. Included are his encounters with the likes of Mr. Perfect, Davey Boy Smith, Kevin Nash, Ricky Steamboat, Owen Hart, The Undertaker and Chris Benoit. The best matches are probably the match with Benoit and the match with Owen Hart from WrestleMania X.
Also included as special features are some stories from Bret about his family. One of the highlights is when he tells a story about Owen prank-calling his dad.
If you are a fan of Bret Hart, really you should already have this DVD. If you don't, I can't recommend it enough.
If you are unfamiliar with Bret Hart but you appreciate pro wrestling at its finest then I cannot recommend this enough. This is the best possible way to become familiar with his work and the story behind his entire career.
