DVD Description
After natural disasters have all but destroyed the Earth, leaving entire cities buried, one man named Violence Jack tries to avert a civil war brewing among the wretched inhabitants of a subterranean metropolis called Evil Town. Based on a character created by manga horror specialist, Go Nagai.
Advantages: Enjoyable, well presented, great value Disadvantages: Extremely suspect English dialogue, only 48 minutes long, not as good as Princess Mononoke
...From my past experience of anime's I have concluded that it must be difficult to make a truly bad one. If the Japanese-to-English translation is a bit ropey, then the story usually makes up for it, and if all else fails, they are worth watching just for the animation and effects. I suppose creaters would see quite early on if they were on to a flop production - it takes a lot of time and effort to make these kind of films and so they probably wouldn't persevere.
With this in mind I bought Psychic Wars, first released in Japan back in 1991, converted to English in 1998 and remastered for DVD earlier this year. It is part of the Manga budget ' Collection' series of films, £7.99 each, and most of which are available from play.com.
Set (naturally) in Japan, Psychic Wars follows the actions of an expert surgeon called Ukyo, who we first...

...Appleseed:
I have been cataloguing my DVD collection recently and I noticed that I did not have that many anime films despite being a huge fan of the genre. I have therefore been using my review earnings to rectify the situation and as a result I have a much healthier anime section now.
Appleseed is an anime film I had heard about many times but for whatever reason I had never gotten around to watching it so when I saw it on Amazon for only £4.98 I decided to get it and give it a go.
For those of you unfamiliar with the anime genre it is basically a term used, (everywhere apart from Japan), to describe Japanese animation. In Japanese though anime simply means animation, Japanese or otherwise. Many people refer to all anime as Manga but Manga is a specific company, I guess it?s like people calling all vacuum cleaners ?Hoovers...

Advantages: The gorgeous, fluid animation, the excellent characterisation, the clever story and perfect sound Disadvantages: Only that the dubbed english language script is different to the english subtitles, not a huge problem!
...the Dubbed sound usually is on these AniméDVD titles. I have no idea how good this film sounds on a surround sound system, as I don't own one yet. So your guess is as good as mine! Thankfully the dubbed audio seemed to match the lips of the characters perfectly, unlike in the Japanese version, according to the Director's commentary. :-P
On the Soundtrack are contribution tracks (which is unusual for Japanese Manga) from the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Basement Jaxx (for the opening titles), Carl Craig and Atom (who??!!)amongst others, as well as an orchestral score by Tetsuya Takahashi.
PICTURE QUALITY
The style of animation in this is totally unique. Its 3D and yet it still has the look of Japanese style, hand-drawn cel animation, which is so familiar to fans of Manga movies. In fact some parts of this film feel as...
