Review: Fascinating viewing... the reciprocol influence of artist upon place is visible and infectious. (The Observer Magazine, )
Advantages: Acting, sets and special effects. Disadvantages: Where did the end go???
...really stood out to me as remarkable, Vincent D’Onofrio who plays Gomer, (“Pyle”). His performance is simply mind blowing as he struggles to deal with the pressure that comes with being a fat marine trainee and the intense “motivation” (bullying) he receives from the D.I and the rest of the unit. He has no friends other than his riffle, “Charlene”. His compelling and extremely lifelike performance is spectacular and the film alone is worth watching just for that.

In Conclusion the film is brilliant, realistic and depressing and although it doesn’t make you feel good about yourself has a strong message and is definitely worth watching. If you are a war movie fan it is essential to your collection.

Advantages: Good quality anime, good subtitiles Disadvantages: Very bad English dubbing
...This DVD contains the first four episodes;
*The Guy I kinda like is a sergeant
*I Want to Protect You
*Lingerie Panic
*Kidnap
As you would expect these are the basic introduction episodes. Only by episode four is the series really beginning to show its plot.
Episode 1
We are introduced to the main characters in the series, initially to a group of mercenaries known as 'Mithril'. Sousuke Sagara, Melissa Mao and Kurz Weber, who are sent to protect Kaname Chidori, a Japanese high school student. The reason being that she is one of the 'whispered', a group of people who have access to a great supply of technological knowledge from the future. It is never explained how this came to be. In this episode the main story plot doesn't reveal itself, but the love story between Sousuke Sagara and Kaname Chidori starts to come into focus...

Advantages: Slick and moody with excellent storylines Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too moody for some
.... The best guest performance though has to be the ever versatile Maggie O'Neill in Episode 4. Her character, the mysterious Julia, is both hugely attractive and wholly amoral and we, like her gullible victims, find ourselves falling for her breathy charms. Vincent, though, is another matter entirely.
Some might wonder why a series starring the archetypical Londoner is set 'up north' in Manchester. The answer, seemingly, is that it was just far easier and more practical to shoot in Manchester than in London; Winstone is on record as saying so, at least. And it works. The Manchester backdrop is interesting and diverse, from the grimy back alleys to the shiny new developments. The whole series just seems to be keyed on atmosphere. The music is moody and slick and the episodes are full of long shots of people.... well, just walking about, going...
