DVD Description
A blistering, unsentimental portrait of the great Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, Robert Altman's VINCENT AND THEO focuses on the deeply neurotic relationship between the unstable, impoverished Vincent (Tim Roth) and his art dealer brother, Theo (Paul Rhys). Specifically, the film investigates the role Theo played in providing the normality and connection to the outer world that Vincent lacked--while Vincent, in turn, acted as the living embodiment of Theo's unfulfilled artistic aspirations. In the end, Theo's inability to secure his brother's financial independence and help him achieve a sense of self-worth by selling his paintings caused him a misery almost as profound as Vincent's. As the introverted Vincent, Roth delivers an intensely passionate performance, and Rhys is just as moving as the more reserved Theo. Altman chooses to concentrate on the artist himself, likely providing a deeper insight into the individual than scenes of him painting ever could. VINCENT AND THEO remains an unflinching and powerful interpretation of the life of one of the world's most famous artists.
Professional reviews
Review: "...There are stupendous performances -- funny, sorrowful and moving....An Altman masterpiece..." (Rolling Stone, p.162, 15/11/1990)
Advantages: Slick and moody with excellent storylines Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too moody for some
...to and fro but generally getting where they want to go, as does the narrative. Vincent was a real winner as a series and whether ITV ditched it due to financial constraints or whether they genuinely believe that 'where there's muck there's brass' doesn't alter that fact. It's a shame nevertheless. Ant and Dec's accountant might not think so, however.
The DVD
The Series 1 DVD is a basic affair. There are two discs each with two episodes and you can either watch specific episodes or watch the whole thing consecutively. Apart from the obligatory (and irritating) anti-piracy introduction, that's your lot.
Series 1 and 2 can be purchased together in a 4-disc single package but, curiously, it does work out cheaper if the two series are bought separately....

Advantages: The cast, the plot, the uniqueness of the film Disadvantages: Only if you loathe violence and swearing
...OUTLINE
Travolta and Jackson play Vincent Vega and Jules Winfield, two hitmen who work for Mr Big (Rhames). Doing his dirty work of money laundering and settling scores with double-crossing conmen, they let their guns do the talking whilst engaging each other in a witty and sometimes aggressive dialogue. These two are the centre point of the whole film. Whilst the story drifts from character to character, Jules and Vincent are central to everything that is good about the film. Their actions, mannerisms and arguments are a joy to watch. Playing Mr Big's wife Mia is Uma Thurman, she is very much her own woman and her main interaction comes when she is taken out on the town by Vincent. If Vega and Jules have the central roles, the scenes with Vega and Mia are certainly an intruiging sub-plot. Tying them all together are the cool as a cucumber...
