1985 saw the release of Roger Moore's 7th and final outing as James Bond, the MI6 agent. In one of the last plots penned by Bond creator Ian Fleming, Moore and critics were not too keen on the film, despite box office success.
The Plot
Sent to Siberia to recover agent 003's corpse, Bond picks up a microchip which is an exact replica of one manufactured by Zorin Industries, owned by the eccentric businessman, Max Zorin. Bond goes undercover to meet Zorin and finds out that he is producing a revolutionary microchip, and that in order to conquer the microchip market, he is planning to destroy Silicon Valley through a series of earthquakes. Bond must team up with oil company owner Stacey Sutton to take on Zorin, his bodyguard May Day and his troops.
The Cast and Performances
Although Moore did not like this film, I thought he was rather good in it. He combines very well with the other actors in the film, and gives another convincing performance as 007. Christopher Walken is outstanding as Zorin, and is one of the best Bond villains ever. He was acclaimed for his role. Grace Jones do3es very well as May Day, but not much acting was required for the role - she mainly just had to look menacing, which she seems to do with ease.
Patrick Macnee gives a good turn as a very British horse trainer, Sir Godfrey Tibbett, and Tanya Roberts is good as Bond girl Stacey Sutton, as is Fiona Fullerton as Pola Ivanova. David Yip has a cameo performance. Robert Brown, Desmond Llewelyn and Lois Maxwell return as M, Q and Miss Moneypenny, and the rest of the cast support admirably.
My Opinion
The soundtrack to this Bond ilm haunts me, probably due to the title track, performed by Duran Duran. The film has good action for the whole way through, and Moore and Walken as enemies keep it fast paced, but I felt the plot was not as good as other Bond films. It was not as believable, and hence the plot suffered.
However, the scenery and settings for the film are as beautiful as we have come to expect with Bond films. The Eiffel Tower is the setting for a chase scene, including its Jules Verne Restaurant, as is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and some ski scenes in the Swiss Alps. The camer work is better than in director John Glen's previous Bond films, and the director seems to be cementing his role as a Bond director rather well.
Although the box office disagrees, many have put this down as the worst Bond film made, including Roger Moore and Sean Connery. Moore was 57 when the film was released, and both he and Connery were critical of this. Moore disliked the genocidal nature of Zorin's machine gun killings, saying that it just wasn't like a Bond film, and critics have also been harsh with this film. However, I enjoyed it immensely, with the fast paced nature perhaps being more to my liking.
Advantages: Occassional moments of professional film making Disadvantages: lazy & tired... a real stinker in the Bond canon
...believable in the role of a suave, sophisticated and sexy secret agent.
The supporting cast is of no help whatsoever. Grace Jones is just plain unattractive and all the snarling and high heels in the world won't make her a classic foe in the mould of Red Grant. Her senior cohort, Max Zorin - even the names were bad by now - is played with an annoying collection of twitches and hisses by Christopher Walken, who appears far too young and lightweight ... ...Sir Godfrey Tibbet, played with a delightfully light touch by Patrick Macnee, who could still cut it as Steed whilst Moore looks out of his depth as Bond...ironic.
The story is hokum of the first order and is a collection of tired set pieces, lame gags, and recycled ideas. Glen is out of sorts in his third outing as director, in fact the whole production crew seems to be on some sort of leave of senses. Peter Lamont comes out best with his sets, ...

The obvious thing to say is that Roger looks too old to play the part and indeed well...he is. Well not totally. He does bring a lot to the role - a touch of humour, ...

Advantages: Nice locations, good action scenes and a super villain Disadvantages: Moore a little tired and the plot isn't the best in the series
A View To A Kill marked the end of the 12-year Roger Moore era of Bond. At 58 years of age when the film was released back in 1985, Moore is the oldest actor to have been cast as the super-agent to date. To many, Octopussy should have been his last, but whilst A View To A Kill has frailties both in parts of the plot and the acting, it is among the more enjoyable films.

Advantages: Great last Bond film for Roger Disadvantages: Not rated as Roger Moore's best Bond
As A View to a kill was the first Bond film I ever saw in the cinema and I have very good memories of it, I thought I should review this one.
This was made in 1985 and was Roger Moores last outing as James Bond, he did not really want to do this one as he thought that he was too old at this stage to play the part. The storyline was actually set up for the new Bond Timothy Dalton but there was a last minute hitch and the film Dalton was currently ... ...the role.
This had a very good cast setting With Roger in the title role, Christopher Walken playing the main villain Max Zorin, Grace Jones as his sidekick Mayday, Tanya Roberts playing Bonds love interest Stacey Sutton, and the Bond regulars Desmond Llewelyn as Q, and Lois Maxwell as miss moneypenny
This was filmed in Pinewood studios in London, and had settings in Paris and San Francisco. When filming in Paris it took a very long time to get ...

You are fully aware you're nearly the whole way through the year when the James Bond DVDS suddenly come to full exposure in the shops. Normally just before Christmas arrives the James Bond DVD's appear in the shops, Buy one get one free. Not this year however; this year for your £12.99 you'll be getting one, if you're lucky.
With the impending release of the proper version of Casino Royale (not the 60's comedy starring David Niven) the James Bond DVDS have had further restoration than they have before.
A ViewTo A Kill
Roger Moore's last outing as secret agent James Bond begins in the usual off the wall style. Bond is being pusued across the snow by "unknown assailants" to the jolly tune of the Beach Boys "California Girls" before heading for a submarine discussed as an iceberg.
From here Bond is sent to Paris for a meeting ...
Advantages: Original sequences involving a Horse race. Disadvantages: Morre is too old to be believable as 007.
The title of A Viewto a Kill is taken from Ian Fleming's short story called From a Viewto a Kill. Published in April 1960 as part of a collection of short stories in the novel For Your Eyes Only, the story tells of Bond going undercover to investigate the murder of a dispatch rider in France.
This was Roger Moore's seventh and final outing as 007, at the time Moore was 58 and had been in the role of Bond for twelve years so the believability factor with him on screen canoodling with a Bond beauty that was at least 30 years younger was beginning to be stretched beyond belief. In fact Moore announced his retirement from the role after filming had completed stating that his was to be his last film of the series.
The pre title sequence begins with Bond recovering a microchip from the dead body of 003 in Siberia. The chip is the key ...
Advantages: Fun cast, good stunts Disadvantages: Bit silly in places, quite long
A ViewTo A Kill, first released in 1985, was the seventh and final film to feature Roger Moore as James Bond and the fourteenth entry in the franchise. The film is not widely regarded to be one of the strongest entries in the series, often cropping up near the bottom of Bond fan lists, but it is, in my opinion, an enjoyable piece of hokum that has more to enjoy than some would give it credit for.
A ViewTo A Kill's plot is essentially an update of Goldfinger with Silicon Valley replacing Fort Knox. James Bond investigates wealthy microchip industrialist Max Zorin (Christopher Walken) and stumbles upon a scheme that proposes to flood oil wells along the San Andreas fault in California, set off explosives and destroy Silicon Valley. Such a scheme would of course make Zorin's business considerably more lucrative and unique. Along ...
Roger Moore stars in his last appearance as 007, pitting his wits against Max Zorin, billionaire industrialist and racehorse owner, who intends to make a killing of earthquake proportions on the world microchip market.

"...The potential for cinematic thrills and chills, what with glamorous locations, beautiful women and exotic locations, is still there..." (Variety, 22/05/1985)
DVD Description
James Bond (Roger Moore) must foil the plot of a diabolical scientist trying to control the world computer market by destroying California's Silicon Valley. Christopher Walken is entertaining to watch as the evil madman; the film also features the trademark Bond bevy of beauties, including Tanya Roberts and Grace Jones. A VIEW TO A KILL features a title song by Duran Duran and marks the last time Moore would play Bond.
