When two best friends, sensible Vicky and adventurous Cristina, decide to take a trip to Barcelona, they meet the dark mysterious Juan Antonio, a Spanish painter. Cristina immediately falls for his seductive charm and encourages the cautious Vicky to take a trip to his home town where he has offered them a room in his house. When the girls find out about Juan Antonio's previous violent relationship which ended with him nearly being killed, he becomes even more alluring to Cristina who begins a passionate affair with him. However, when Juan Antonio spends some time alone with Vicky, she also begins to see his attractions and ultimately betrays her fiancé, who awaits her return at home.
But when Juan Antonio's ex Maria Elena shows up, she brings all her problems with her and adds lots of spice into the mix. Possessive, jealous, volatile, yet truly captivating, Maria Elena begins a highly charged and passionate love affair with both Cristina and Juan Antonio, leaving the conventional Vicky to marry her fiancé and lead her 'normal' life.

This was one of those films which I wasn't too bothered about seeing but as I have a Cineworld Unlimited card, so don't have to pay, I thought I might as well. However, it ended up finishing before I got the chance to see it so I ended up finally seeing it on a long flight. And I am so glad that I didn't waste two hours of my life watching it in the cinema and I'm actually a little disappointed that I wasted almost two hours watching it on the flight when I could have watched something much better or even fallen asleep!
The entire film was very slow and generally rather dull. It began with a narration about the lives of the best friends and this narration continued throughout the film. This was plain annoying as it didn't add anything extra, didn't tell you anything you didn't already know and the voice was simply dull and droning and wouldn't fail to send you to sleep.
I film was supposed to be a love story played out in a romantic village near Barcelona with Vicky and Cristina, both with very different personalities and very different views on love and romance. However, the whole thing just seemed like a huge porno with everyone sleeping with everyone else! I didn't feel any love or romance coming from the film but just pure lust.
I am a fan of Scarlett Johansson and have really enjoyed her other films but I completely disliked her in this film. Her character of Cristina was flirtatious, passionate and naïve, yet I took an immediate dislike to her as she seemed to be smug and self-centered. The character of Juan Antonio was also someone I didn't take much of a liking to - yes he was dark, mysterious and charming, but I didn't feel his attraction that every single woman on screen seemed to feel. The only good thing about the film was the casting of Penelope Cruz who played a brilliant role in being the fiery and passionate Spanish woman. She was the only thing in the film which gave any emotion and action and it would have been a complete flop had it not been for her.
Unless you enjoy these sorts of dull and uneventful films, I really wouldn't recommend this. The whole thing was just slow, dull and boring and left me feeling tired and disappointed. I really cannot understand how it won any awards or even nominations.
