'Allo Vera!

Advantages: Great film with an absorbing storyline and great acting
Disadvantages: Could be a little slow moving for some, although I loved it

available on DVD for just under £6 at Amazon.co.uk. I however watched it on VHS, so I cant comment on the quality of the DVD extras, although they do include the trailer and a cast and crew documentary. Links: www.VeraDrake.com -official movie site. www.amazon.co.uk - to buy. I used www.wikipedia.com to check my facts on abortion law and the statistics used in this review. ...

Review of Vera Drake (DVD)

The Singing Detective

Advantages: Different and very entertaining.
Disadvantages: None.

I came across this movie while searching through my brother's DVD collection and was quite interested as I had watched the T.V. series ' The singing Detective ' by Dennis Potter (which I thought was brilliant ) I did'nt know it had been made into a movie and on seeing that Robert Downey Jr was playing the lead role among some other good actors I thought it was worth borrowing. Although based on the TV series of the same name and the same storyline there are a few differences.................. The TV series is set in 1940's London with a big band music theme whereas the Movie is set in 1950's America with a Rock 'n' Roll musical theme ! Dan Dark (Robert Downey Jr.) is a successful writer, who writes fictional detective stories, but his life and his writing has come to a bit of a standstill when he is admitted to hospital ...

Vera Drake - The Woman with two Lives

Advantages: Excellent story, well written and superbly acted
Disadvantages: Lack of extra features

I was browsing in Music Zone when I saw this DVD available for £5.99. Never one to miss a bargain, I decided I'd give it a go. I'd read the back of the box and the story sounded interesting, so I went home and put it on. What followed was an emotional rollercoaster of 2 hours viewing. This film is absolutely fantastic and, in my opinion, one the best British films ever to be produced. The film is available from amazon.co.uk for £6.99 now. Vera Drake (played magnificently by Imelda Staunton) is a cleaner in England in the 1950s. She is a devoted Mother to her now grownup children who still live with her, and offers her time selflessly to help the needy. Her husband, Stan (played by Phil Davis, who does a magnificent job) is a mechanic. Her son, Sid, (Daniel Mays) is a tailor and daughter, Ethel (Alex Kelly) works in a light bulb ...
