A presidential assassination attempt is told from multiple points of view in Pete Travis' directorial debut, VANTAGE POINT. U.S. president Ashton (William Hurt) is in Salamanca,...
more...Spain, to announce plans for a major global summit on terrorism. But as he stands behind the podium in front of an adoring crowd (with protesters blocked off from the stage), he is shot twice, followed shortly by a small explosion and then a massive blast. Secret Service Agents Barnes (Dennis Quaid), Taylor (Matthew Fox), and Holden (Richard T. Jones) immediately jump into action, trying to find the terrorists responsible amid all the chaos. The thriller first shows the events through the eyes of television news producer Rex Brooks (Sigourney Weaver), and then the film rewinds, replaying the action from a different point of view. Each perspective reveals a few more clues, then rewinds again, taking the audience through the assassination attempt and its aftermath again.
VANTAGE POINT has the feel of the 1950 Akira Kurosawa classic RASHOMON, told with the speed of the television show 24. The all-star cast also includes Forest Whitaker (THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND), who gives another fine performance, playing an American tourist recording everything on his video camera. The rewind device--reminiscent of the Bill Murray comedy GROUNDHOG DAY--could have been gimmicky, but instead Travis and first-time screenwriter Barry L. Levy make it work, as more details are revealed with each flashback, leading to a pulse-pounding chase and surprising finale.

I will try and tell you about the movie without giving too much away, otherwise it'll be pointless in you watching it, as it'll lose the surprise and spin that is added to the movie.

The way that this movie has been made is rather clever. It shows you the points of views of a number of different people, and the only thing that remains the same is what they see in the end. It is different to most movies that are made which makes it more interesting.

The movie takes place in Spain around the landmark summit on the global war on terror. When the President is shot, there is chaos, and after that there are two explosions to follow. This is where the movie starts to break up. For the first half of the movie it shows you what different people saw on the day, and just when you are about to find out who tried to assonate the president, time rewinds back to 12pm and you are shown the event through the eyes of someone else. Each view point reveals something. There are 8 people and 8 points of view, yet only 1 truth. After a while the rewinding back to 12pm starts to get boring and repetitive, but just as this happens, the movie stops rewinding back to 12pm but continues and you are able to see what exactly happened prior to the assassination and immediately after it through the eyes of everyone, mainly the assassins and their associates. This is when it starts to get interesting and the story begins to unwind and you find out what really happened.

I enjoyed watching this movie, however towards the middle I started to get bored of it as it kept rewinding back to 12pm and showing basically the same thing over and over just from different angles and perspectives. I was glad to find at this point that the movie continued rather then continuing to rewind. This is where I found the movie really started as the story line began to uncover and we are able to see what actually happens and how it was planned and done.

Characters:
Thomas Barnes is a Secret Service agent who is assigned to protect the President at a landmark summit. He realises that something is wrong and starts to slowly uncover what is going on to try and catch the bad guys.
Kent Taylor is also a Secret Service agent who is assigned to protect the President.
Howard Lewis is an American tourist who is videotaping the historic event to show his children.
Enrique is a local police officer who gets caught in the middle. The girl he is in love with, Veronica, is one of the bad guys, he just doesn't know it. He gets caught by the Secret Service as they think he has something to do with it, he has to try and prove his innocence as well as try and do his job.
Javier is a skilled gunman and is forced to help the assassins as they are holding his brother hostage.
Suarez is the mastermind behind the whole assassination. He tells everyone what to do and when to do it.
Veronica is an assassin and works with Suarez. She plays with Enrique and gets him to bring in something through the metal detectors for him.

Quotes you can look forward to:
Suarez: The beauty of American arrogance is that they cannot imagine a world in which they are not a step ahead.

Angie Jones: The President of the United States has been shot.

Kent Taylor: This war will never end.
