Right I have put this in my disadvantages but need to state it again. This is not a horror movie. The characters that are portrayed in this movie may suggest a horror. But it is far from scary.
We all know the story of Van Helsing and Dracula. Portrayed very well in the classics as an old man..
This is different, very different. We see Van Helsing as a younger man, much stronger and agile. Gone has the lurking in the corner trying to prise dracula out or preaching, replaced by fancy gadgets for killing and hands on approach for getting the job done.
The movie starts in black and white, yes don't try and bang your T.V or think you brought a dud! with Frankenstien being brought to life and Dracula helping. There is a uproar by the locals and Frankenstien ends up falling through a windmill on fire! The movie then moves onto Van Helsing ( Hugh Jackman) fighting Mr Hyde ( Dr Jeckell and Mr Hyde). We find that Van Helsing is a man with a lost past, found by the church with no idea of who he was. The church took it apon themselves to turn him into a fighter and work for the good of god..
Van Helsing is sent to Transylvania to help a non to helpless Anna Valerious ( Kate Beckinsale ) to fight Dracula as she is the last of the Valerious and her line must not end!
To stop this film becoming a usual Van Helsing Vs Dracula they throw in Frankenstein and the wolfman into the mix!!!
The mission to help Anna changes as Van Helsing finds out his psat has something to do with Dracula and that Dracula is trying to make his dead children become alive!
To be honest the movie isn't that great. This is the first review i have made where i haven't sung the praises of the movie. But to be honest i think this movie was made on the back of Hugh Jackman's popularity after X-men!
The movie is very predictable and fails to really got going. The only parts i would really mention is the monk that travels with Helsing, he comes out with some very funny lines. The movie isn't supposed to be funny, but you end up laughing at certain lines and cringing at the rest!
This movie is one for the kids or teenagers, but not for a late night viewing.. It's not as good as it should be. They had the cast they had a good story, but the way it was played out was shocking. I own the DVD, this was brought for me by my brother and to be honest after watching i wished he had brought me a horrible jumper!!!!!
The exra's on the disc are very good, the movie dis contains : Audio commentary from director Stephen Sommers and producer Bob Ducsay Audio commentary from Richard Roxburgh, Shuler Hensley and Will Kemp Bloopers 'Explore Dracula's Castle' featurette 'Bringing The Monsters To Life' featurette 'You Are In The Movie!' featurette 'The Legend Of Van Helsing' featurette Interactive menu Scene access
The second disc contains: 'Explore Frankenstein's Lab' featurette 'Van Helsing: The Story, The Life, The Legend', a mini-documentary 'The Music Of Van Helsing' featurette Dracula's lair is transformed!
All interesting and probably more enjoyable than the movie itself!

I'm not a big fan of Stephen Sommers after The Mummy Returns, and I never really liked this much either. The ending was so naff! But this was a very good review. ~ Pete

Well written, detailed and quite informative review there, we have this, and I agree that the extras are more entertaining than the film itself.........Roy
