Aren't we all somewhat tired with slasher movies now? We had a run of them in the 80s which was dragged on beyond a joke by the Friday 13th series of 13+ movies, and Halloween which made it past 6. Then we had the revival of them with Scream which was reall a parody of the whole lot although a lot of people missed the point and along the way we had had thousands of cheap imitators. What the 21st century doesn't need is more slasher movies.
It doesn't need Valentine.
Valentine harks back to the days of Halloween for its inspiration, rather than the current crop of slasher pics. However, what it doesn't do is manage to capture the charm of that movie, but rather steals plots and sets from it and its bretheren, jumbles them together and then spews them onto the screen. Add to this mess a few pretty faces, a script which is so bad that its almost funny in parts, a complete lack of acting talent, no suspense, little gore and you have an hour and a half of boredom. No one could even think of a decent plot. I ask you - a couple of girls tease this guy at school, eventually playing a gag which tips a punch bowl over his head(Carrie anyone?)...which of course leads him to have plastic surgery, and come killing them one by one in later life. Of course it does...and of course he happens to go from geek to super hunk, and all his targets are nubile young women, with firm bodies, tight buns, pretty smiles and a penchant for showing cleavage. Fortunately we as the audience have one braincell between us and at the moment its being shared by the guy on the far left in the front row who just dozed off...
You have to ask youself whether the 21st century needs another Halloween movie. We had H2O not too long ago and it was absolute rubbish - do we need Valentine paying tribute to its predecessor? I think not personally, and especially when its handled by a director of this little talent. Blanks' previous offerings have included Urban Legend which was pretty mediocre but this goes way beyond that. It stinks, pure and simple. Think of all the elements which make a good movie, and you'll find them missing from here. You have to wonder exactly what is on a director's mind when they miss the boat quite this badly. Do they really think that a pretty fae, a little cleavage and the odd sexual innuendo is going to pack the crowds in? Sadly I think they do, and Valentine tries to play upon its cast's looks rather than anything else. The problem is the camera might love them, but we could care less about these inept wooden characters. You'll probably end up cheering the killer on just to get rid of their vacuous presence from the screen. as to the identity of this killer...trust me you'll be so bored by the end of this slow moving steaming heap of cinematic dung that you really won't care. Its that bad.
Advantages: some pretty faces in the film Disadvantages: poor acting, easy to guess who the killer is
...him at the high school Valentine Ball and being cruelly rejected by all of them bar one, Dorothy, who is slightly chubby (but this is USA slightly chubby means she’s seen by all as really fat), who goes under the stage and has a bit of a kissing session with him till some other kids see them and she claims he forced himself on her. The other mean kids pour some gunk all over him and you realise this is why the kid turns into a bit of a psycho! Fast ... ...to the house where the Valentine party is taking place and the victims are being killed off very rapidly but his attendance (or rather lack of it) is never evident. I just thought it was a bit weird to show the scene of him calling to say he was on his way and then… nothing! Can’t go into more detail about the climax obviously as I don’t want to spoil the ending of the film – although I guessed correctly pretty early on as to who the killer was. ...

Advantages: Good acting, bits that focus on the characters are good Disadvantages: Not scary or jumpy, predicatble
Valentine is a decent movie and one that I enjoyed, but I’d be lying if I said it covered new ground as far as teen slasher movies go.
PLOT:
Valentine begins with a geeky 6th grader named Jeremy Melton being humiliated by a group of attractive girls and a gang of bullies at a Valentines dance. 13 years later, the fateful night has not gone unforgotten. Coming up to Valentines Day each girl (now grown up) is picked off by the masked killer, suspected ... ...Heigl
The actors in Valentine are young and able, though personally I feel their talents are wasted in this film. Then again, I only actually went to see Valentine so I could catch a glimpse of the gorgeous David Boreanaz, well known for the role of Angel in TV’s ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’ He was suitably broody as Kate’s alcoholic boyfriend, so I was happy.
CONCLUSIONS:
If you’re a fan of horror movies like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, ...

...ago at the Sixth grade valentine ball, at least they think it’s him….i won’t spoil it!
You can guess the rest. Denise Richards (Beautiful but wooden as ever) and David Boreanaz (Angel of Buffy fame) head up the cast but why did they bother? Anyone could have starred in this film and pulled it off, it isn’t that difficult to act over the top and be generally annoying.
So we get a bunch of attractive twenty/thirty year olds ... ...am off to see The Hole tonight, hopefully it’ll be a good one, I remain hopeful that the horror film…sorry, the GOOD horror film will return.

Valentine is just your average teen-slasher flick. Back in college, four friends enjoyed in humiliating a nerdy kid (Boreanaz). Now, 13 years later the loser has changed his identity and is after revenge. One by one he goes cleverly around killing them off in a very organised plan. Of course to keep us guessing who the killer is, he wears a rather strange mask. ... ...Compared to other slasher-flicks, Valentine does not compare well. It may have 5 stunningly, sexy women on the cast, one of those being Denise Richards, but that does not make a great film. Fans of the television shows 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'Angel' will enjoy the film as it stars the fan-favourite actor, David Boreanaz. But to the rest of you it's been there and done that with Scream 1, 2 and 3 for this film.
One point I may add is that ...

Advantages: Hmm... Disadvantages: Bad storyline, bad acting, predictable... I could go on...
Any American horror film with a 15 certificate tends to end up like a cross between one of those teen date films and Scream - which is what you've got here, but without the humour and the knowingness of the Scream movies.
The plot's weak - the basic story starts with events at a high school dance, where a geeky kid gets turned down by just about every girl he asks to dance, then gets beaten up by the boys there. Cut to over ten years later, when ... ...deceptively gorgeous-looking heart-shaped box of chocolates!), and we suddenly seem to have a big revenge campaign.
Starring Denise Richards (from Drop Dead Gorgeous) and David Boreanaz (from Buffy) there are no huge names - which I suppose is a plus with a horror movie, as it means you never know who's going to die in the early scenes.
There are many problems with the plot - a big one, for me, being why are none of the boys targeted? I mean, they ...

From behind a thick pair of NHS type glasses, Valentin tries to understand the world of adults. There are so many questions, like why did his mum leave him, if grandad is happier with God, why didn't he die sooner, why are his father's girlfriends always ugly and will he ever become an astronaut?
This film is set in 1969 Argentina and tells the story of eight years old Valentin. In his short life, he has already encountered many trials. He is raised by his grandmother, whom he loves and is irritated by in equal measure. She has lost her husband and is very lonely and although she is glad of the presence of her grandson, she comes across as brusque at times.
Oh, dear, I have managed to make this sound quite gloomy. Believe me, it is not the case. The main character of the film, Valentin, will win your heart. First, he is ...

Willy Russell proved he had talent when he wrote Educating Rita. It was apparent he knew how people coped and dealt with things, and also how they felt about others and themselves, even. Willy Russel, in Shirley Valentine, writes about a woman who wants to be who she was. Not looks wise. Not hair wise. Not even boobs wise! No, she just wants to be able to be that woman again in her heart, and be Shirley Valentine once again. Shirley Valentine is one of those deep, light-hearted films for everyone. It’s a lovely tale, but it’s got a heck of a story or two, and it’s an absolute gem. It was performed on stage for a while, and it was a big hit there, as well (Willy Russel also wrote the stage play).

"VALENTINE is a smart, stylish horror picture....Expertly structured....Blanks keeps us guessing..." (Los Angeles Times, p.F8, 03/02/2001)
From the director of URBAN LEGEND, VALENTINE is a horror story starring David Boreanaz (ANGEL) and Denise Richards (WILD THINGS). A group of four precocious college girls makes fun of one of their nerdy classmates--a young man who harbors a serious grudge about it for years afterward. Finally, having grown into a handsome, self-assured man, he goes back to get his revenge: Each year on Valentine's Day he takes one of them on a murderous date.
