The Plot
Based on a Graphic Novel in the 1980's the story is set in the future around about 2015 where the world is very different from what we know today. The story follows V a freedom fighter who is on a mission to get revenge on every one that has hurt him along the way.
Britain is now ruled by the Government, different races and homosexuals have been got rid of, as they have been used a experiments. The film begins with V showing Evey his idea of freedom when he blows up a building on the 5th of November, he begins to show people from around the country his idea of Britain, and that they should be free to do and say whatever they want.
Along the way however this freedom fighter or superhero, gets revenge on the people that have made his life as bad as possible.

My Opinion
I brought this DVD for a cheap price when I went into HMV and have only just sat around to watch it. I sat down last night, not really expecting much, after all the crap films we have seen lately, but I pleasantly enjoyed myself.
It is technically a superhero movie, but unlike what you'd get in the likes of Superman and Daredevil even, it's not made for 12 year olds or even 7 year olds to understand, the plot is very complex and very smartly written.
Even though this may be counted as a superhero movie, you can't really call V a superhero. The only person I can really describe him to is Dexter, if you haven't seen that TV show then you won't understand what I mean, but Dexter and V both are trying to help out the world, by getting rid of the bad people in it. V is a bit different in the way that he is not just hurting the baddies, he is getting revenge on everyone who has even done any bad to him.
In the extras Stephen Fry talks about the way that this movie is very unique from other movies out there at the moment as it is set in a dystopian future. The graphic novel that this was based on was set in the future in the 80's, so the Director has decided to put this way into the future, I believe at one point they say 2015. There is an obvious inspiration for the 'future United Kingdom' and that is of course Nazi Germany. Sutler has the same aura that you see Hitler had, the posters and the fact that you couldn't do or say anything shows this.
Characters/Performance
For me this is the first film I have ever seen Natalie Portman act in, never ever watched a Star Wars in my life and never will, however she is a fantastic actress. She's obviously American from her accent in the extras, but in the film she carefully and brilliantly pulls of a British accent which is perfect. Portman plays Evey Hammond, a young woman who is at the wrong place at the wrong time and her life changes forever.
The role was perfect for Portman, who really got into the role of Evey, even having her head shaved at one point. I remember seeing her after this film was done with a shaved head so I assume it was real, she really got into the role of Evey.
I knew the name of Hugo Weaving, but throughout the film I was sat there unable to put a face with a name. Weaving had the hardest role of all, throughout the whole film, he has no face, it's covered by a mask and for me this made is quite terrifying, but brilliant at the same time. Weaving managed to put so much emotion into his voice, as he couldn't use his face to show this, this shows a very talented actor.
Did You Enjoy It?
Surprisingly I really did, this was one of those films which I hadn't heard much about but when I finally watched it I was in awe of the brilliance behind not only the writing, directing and producing, but more importantly the script and the acting.
The actors of course pulled of an amazing performance, but that couldn't have been done without the amazing script that was given to them. The script is very smart and it really just does justice for the actors who perform it.
Story
The story is just magnificent, it's outstanding even. I think it's one of the first graphic novel films to actually work, and this shocked me, because this was the reason why I was sceptic in the first place about watching the film. Everything just seemed to work with the film, a brilliant idea and a brilliant script.
Special Effects
The special effects throughout the film are great, especially at the end and at the beginning. For me though however, the fighting scenes were just too over the top. On the extras they talk about them not wanting to be too over the top with the effects but it really just made it almost laughable, if I had not known that is was by the same guys that did the Matrix I would have guessed at that point.
How Does It Compare to Similar Films or films by the Same Director?
I have never seen the Matrix films, I have always sat down to watch them and then was asleep in a few minutes, so I can't really compare the film to the Matrix films, however compared to similar films, it's brilliant. The film is very smart and you do need to use your noggin to get through it, it's a lot of fun to watch as well.
Value for Money
I paid £3 for this in HMV and it was well worth the money, it was very enjoyable to watch and I really found it one of the best films I have seen in a long time. Just brilliant and well worth the money you pay for it.
DVD Extras
The extras aren't great you actually only get one, called Freedom Forever, behind V for Vendetta. It's enjoyable to watch, but there could have been more extras on here.
Recommendation/Should You Buy The DVD?
Yes, this is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. Stick with it as it does seem to drag in places, but everything comes together and you begin to understand what is happeing. There are some great performances from the likes of Stephen Fry and Natalie Portman and of course Hugo Weaving.

...celebrated graphic novelist Alan Moore, V For Vendetta tells the gentle tale of a mutilated anti-hero who hides behind a Guy Fawkes mask as he singlehandedly brings down a fascist UK government of the near future.
It is, in many respects, a superhero version of 1984, Brazil played straight if you like. And in this adaptation this is made all the more obvious by the casting of John Hurt as the leader of this dystopian nightmare (John Hurt of course ... ...to it. Never mind.
V is a bit of a vague superhero, really. A cultured man of extreme intelligence, his main talent seems to be for misinformation and sleight of hand, a deep and certain knowledge of how people will react to the events he sets in motion.
However, all this introspection is offset by the fact that he wears an indestructible mask, has swishy slow motion knives and can kung-fu you in the face if you get in his way.
Evey (Natalie Portman) ...

Advantages: Brilliantly atmospheric with a compelling protagonist Disadvantages: Weak script fails properly to examine the morality of V's actions in any depth
...the figure as an icon, V For Vendetta is based loosely upon a comicbook by Alan Moore (who, as usual, has distanced himself from the project), translated by the Wachowski's into a near future that more closely parallels our own timeline.
While the former USA is in chaos, 2020 England is held together by a totalitarian government who control the people through media domination and force. We see events through the eyes of Evey Hammond [Natalie Portman] ... ...finally she comes to understand V himself. The film is about the idea, while the story she tells is about the man.
The film's most chilling line is the high chancellor's enraged cry, "I want them to remember why they need us!" as he feels his vice-like grip over the population beginning to slip. The idea that control of population, largely through fear, is paramount provides a vision that could easily be applied to more than one western government. ...

Advantages: Thought provoking film. Disadvantages: Slows down in the middle part.
Hello there and welcome to my 27th review on Ciao.
Today I have was given my Easter present from my beloved, knowing that I have a slight passion for these types of film she bought me the 2 disc set of V for Vendetta on DVD. Now this was not a film that I saw when released at the cinema at all as I didn't think that it would interest me. Well safe to say now after watching it that I was well wrong on this matter, please read on?..
---The Source---
V for Vendetta was originally a graphic novel released in the early part of the 1980's. Originally published as a strip in Warrior, a publication along similar lines as 2000AD which at this time was selling at its peak.

Advantages: Bonfire Night is complete!! Disadvantages: None
This film is such a great modern classic- set in the future the scene is set for a terrorist / freedom fighter (V) to solve the problem. The lead role is superb and the visual effects match.
The use of daggers is outstanding and never seen before. During the most important fight scene V kills everyone before they can reload their guns- impressive!
Initial scene interesting and shows resemblance between the main characters who are drawn closer together throughout the film.
An old railway line poses the most threat to the Houses of Parliament, unfortunately V dies fighting for his course (even with a metal jacket) however Evey completes what V set out to do and sends the train towards Parliament laden with carriage after carriage of bombs.
The metal mask is perhaps the most important part of this film with the link to Guy ...
Advantages: Beautifully shot, good story Disadvantages: Apart from the insipid love element added on
Sorry, I couldn't help myself with the title.
Anyway, V for Vendetta - The Movie. As you may or may not have found out from all the media hype surrounding this film, it's based on a comic book by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, written back in the 1980's. Moore has asked for his name to be removed from the film and there is an interview online about his reasons for doing so - I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link to it or not. It's easy to find through Google, anyway. Moore has been disappointed by many of his comic book adaptations to the big screen (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen being a case in point) so his public disassociation with V for Vendetta could be seen as a very bad sign.
Indeed, when I went to see this last week, I was definitely a bit nervous. Having read several reviews (which seemed to cover every possible ...
