I first saw this movie/mini-series when I was around 12 years old and somehow it got stuck in my mind. I think what intrigued me at that age was the large spaceships and the lizard like aliens. I came across the DVD some weeks ago and bought it on impulse.
The film was produced in 1983 and the effects are stunning even when compared to todays standard.
The storyline is a bit similar to that of Independence day expect that the aliens are offering to share their knowledge of technology and medicine in exhange for some of earths unused resources. However, you might have guessed by now, this is not the case. It turns out that their human apperance is only a cover up and the real reason for visiting earth is to drain it for water and use humans as a food source!
Mike Donovan (Marc Singer) plays the cameraman who happens to film the first apperance of the enormous motherships hovering in over Mexico. He plays an important role in what is to become the Earths Freedom Group.As a young child I did not understand too much of the story line, however, as an adult I saw a remarkable similarity to Nazi Germany; in the film the Visitors are cleansing the earth of scientists and doctors. This is ofcourse denied by the Visitors and their supporters. They continue to offer mankind medicine and advanced technology and this way they fight off any doubt that their intentions are not friendly. As you would expect, there is a small resistance group of human beings who do not believe the visitors good intentions.
V - The originial Mini Series is a 2 part mini series of 90 minutes each. You will be dragged into a world of lies, drama, action, special effects, love and hate. If you expect to see an end to the story I am sorry to dissapoint you. You will have to buy V - The final Battle, consisting of 3 more episodes of 90 minutes.
If you are a sci-fi fan I would highly recommend this title. If you are not a sci-fi fan I would still recommend this title. It was what got me into the genre back in 1983.
