I bought this DVD a good few years ago when I saw it in a shop after seeing Just Married which stars Brittany Murphey...who is the star of this film too, and loving her acting. So I snapped it up despite never hearing of it before!!!
It turned out to be a great buy as Uptown Girls is an amazing film which I love!!!!!!!!!!
The film is about a young woman, in her early 20's, Molly Gunn played by Brittany Murphey. Molly is the daughter of dead rocker parents who died when Molly was very young in a plane crash. Ever since Molly has lived off her inheritance, never working or giving a care in the world. Her bills are paid from a bank account whcih is in the hands of banker, Bob...and the rest of her money is kept in her freezer...what could go wrong eh!?
It's Mollys birthday and her friends throw her a "surprise" party in a club, where there is a live singer, Neal (Jesse Spencer), who is hoping to atract the attention of Roma Shleine (Heather Locklear) who is a music producer. Roma is in the club with her 7 year old daughter Ray (Dakota Fanning) who is there as she has chased off her lastest babysitter with her weird and overly mature ways. But as well as attracting Roma's attention and getting a record deal, Neal also grabs Molly's attention... she wants him, and she knows she always gets what she wants.....or normally!
When Molly finds her electric cut off, and discovers her bills have not been paid, she finds out Bob the banker has run away with her inheritance...and there is nothing left. How will she cope?!
She reluctantly finds a job, but lacking in skills and experience she is finding it tough, and so when she finds herself looking after the young Ray, she wants to pack in straight away. Ray is the opposite to Molly, she acts like a middle aged woman, in a childs body, she doesn't like to have fun, she is scared of getting dirty and uses the phrase "Fundamentals are the building blocks of fun". While Molly is immature, eats junk food, isn't afraid to get her hands dirty (metaphorically and physically!) and doesn't like to let anythign stop her doing what she wants. Both of them could do with been brought back down to earth, Ray needs to lighten up and be a kid, and Molly needs to act her age and grow up a bit!!!!!!!!!!
The film is amazing, and such a sweet story, you see the two girls coming together in friendship and love as the film goes on, we see the hatred between the pair at the beginning of the film, they are so incompatible and different they can never be friends, but the film is absolutely amazing at showing just how similar the girls are!!!!
I adore this film, its so heartwarming, and has some really quite funny scenes. I definitely recommend this film to anyone who likes a nice little story, I can't really think of any other film which is like it, but if you like either of these actresses, and like a nice soft comedy, this film is definitely for you! :)
