As I don’t wish to spoil the film for anyone who’s thinking of seeing it I will stop telling more on what happens now. Instead I will focus this review on the films ups and downs. As you probably understand from my synopsis this is a film that focuses on a younger audience, mainly teenagers I would say. But I am not sure on this, because the film also holds some very serious marks on parenting, lonelyness and more.
To sum the film up in an easy way, I would say the problem with it is that it is pointing in so many different directions. I wonder if the makers themselves knew for sure why they were making it. At certain points it is plain silly and at several occasions it makes no sense at all. The film jump from one scene onto another without any connection between them. Trying to cover so many aspects the film would have needed more airtime to make any sense.
This makes the film hard to review. Since it’s impossible to tell what the film is trying to say, it’s impossible to say if it’s doing a good job or not. For sure the makers of it have NOT done a good job. The manuscript is too weak and blurry and would have needed much more work on before they started shooting this movie.
The actors aren’t first class either. Murphy looks and acts like a living skeleton that would have needed some fresh air and food before she could seriously live into her role. She looks sick, she’s pale as a ghost and all that kohl around her eyes doesn’t make it any better. But I can’t slam her acting all the way to the bottom, it must have been really hard getting into a role that is so mixed-up but still very soul-less. Fanning is basically just going on from where she left off from “Taken”, doing more or less the exact same role. I didn’t like her in Taken and didn’t like her in this film either. She’s just too pretentious, so precocious, she’s just too much! But on the other hand, she’s ten years old. Aint easy being that young and doing such major films as this one and "Taken". Donald Faison is also doing basically the same role as he does in ”Scrubs”. But he on the other hand does it brilliantly. Huey is the only character in this film that feels authentic. Other actors that are trying hard to make sense out of the horrible manuscript are Marley Shelton as Ingrid and Jesse Spencer as Neal. Both their characters are totally messed up, feeling more or less schizophrenic. You cannot blame the actors.
So, this is a film I recommend. A film I recommend you to AVOID. It could have became so much better if someone had sorted the script out, removed a few of the dozen threads and made the roles more “normal” and not so over exaggerated as they all are. But no-one did and the outcome can only be a big warning sign from me.
Advantages: Cute, funny, great acting, a wonderful storyline!!! Disadvantages: None!

The Plot:
Brittany Murphy plays Molly Gunn a partying rock 'n' roll princess, until her money runs out. Dakota Fanning who plays Ray has a way-too-busy mum to look after her and when her last nanny just ran out she hires Molly Gunn thinking she will be perfect! The unlikely pair face everything from control issues, to tantrums, trying to teach each other how to act their own age. Then Ray is hitting ... ...not always expected as to where your best friend comes from. The Casting:
Brittany Murphy is perfect in this film for the partying rock 'n' roll princess as she looks the part and is always a pleasure to watch. Dakota Fanning is an amazing powerful little actress and her playing the part of a little girl acting much older than her age is suited to her tremondously. Quick review of Uptown Girls (DVD)
I loved this film, it had such a beautiful story line and the characters were so loveable.
The music was fantastic and it was really catchy, i actually went and downloaded one of the songs!
The soryline is about a girl who acts much older than she is, and a woman who takes everything for granted. When the woman looses her job, she is forced to take on some responsibilities, and she learns a lot in the process.
This is the ultimate chic-flick and is perfect for any teenage girl. ...

Advantages: Excellent girlie film mixture of funny and sad. Disadvantages: No good if you don't like girly films
This film is absoluely delightful. You can't help but feel for Molly Gun the main character, the orphan daughter of rock star parents who has everything money can buy and no idea how to live in the real world - until she loses it all. One of the best things about the film is the fantastic clothes and the beautiful locations. It is set in New York so if you liked Sex and the City this is for you.
The story could be described as cheasy, but personally ...

Advantages: Easy going, chick flick Disadvantages: Not as good as it could have been
This is the type of film I normally like, but something didn't quite fit. The plot never quite came together and Jesse Spencer wasn't very believable as the 'rock star'.
I thought the film could have been funnier than it was, but Brittany Murphy and Dakota Flanning played their parts well. Its hard to see who exactly this film would appeal to, which may explain why it was never really a hit. I don't think it would really appeal to younger teen audience, ... ...a chord with all ages but fails. The young girls cleanliness obsession is touching but doesn't quite make the film into a drama, and the lack of humour doesn't turn it into a comedy.
With a few more laughs this film could have been a big hit, but overall it has something missing. ...

"...A feel good tale of love, life and everything..." (Daily Mirror, )
DVD Description
Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning star in this charming romp about a young woman and a young girl who are thrust together against the odds but ultimately teach each other something about life and love. Murphy is Molly Gunn, a rock and roll princess whose father was a famous music legend. She lives wildly off her inheritance--until the man in charge of her money run off with it. With bankruptcy staring her in the face, she is forced to do something she never dreamed of--get a job. So she becomes a nanny--for precocious Ray Schleine (Fanning), an eight-year-old who acts more mature than she does but doesn't have much fun in life. Boaz Yakin's comedy is filmed throughout New York City and it takes advantage of that setting like few recent films. The streets of the city are another character as Molly and Ray slowly begin to develop a relationship that neither one ever dreamed would happen. The movie features support from Heather Locklear as Ray's very busy record executive mum, Donald Faison as Molly's party-loving music friend, and Jesse Spencer as Molly's musician boyfriend, who did all his own singing on the film and whose work appears on the soundtrack album.
