~ ~ Forget your John Wayne’s and your run of the mill Western movies that glamorise the Wild West.
If you enjoy cowboy films, then take a look at this offering “Unforgiven” (1992), that shows you what life was really like in the pioneering days in America, warts and all. Directed by veteran Hollywood actor Clint Eastwood, who cut his teeth in westerns such as “Rawhide” on TV (1960’s), and spaghetti westerns like ... ...and The Ugly” from the 1970’s, this movie won no fewer than four Oscars, including Best Film and Best Director.
Surprisingly enough for such an acclaimed actor/director, this was in fact the first Oscar of Eastwood’s long and illustrious career. ~ ~ The plot is simple enough.
A cowhand takes offence at a prostitute who makes fun of his diminutive manhood, and carves his initials into her face with a bowie knife. (nice fellow!)

...they do!
When The Unforgiven was given what is probably its umpteenth television showing last night this was one viewer who was determined not to miss it. I can't say I've been an enormous fan of everything Clint Eastwood has ever done, particularly in recent years, but you can't deny that his presence in Westerns is the stuff of cinematic legend and this would be the only one of those which has escaped my viewing so far. As the 'man with no name' ... ...this theme in mind, The Unforgiven is a much more accessible western than all those which have come before it, appealing not only to fans of the genre but also to a much wider audience who would otherwise tire of the blood, guts and machismo. Don't be fooled however into thinking that this isn't a violent movie, because it certainly is. In the opening scenes a whore's face is cut up by a drunken cowboy, numerous bloody and relentless beatings are ...

Advantages: just like the old days... Disadvantages: nothing at all
...time of its relese anyway), Unforgiven is a classic, brutal revenge story set in the old western outbacks of the developing United States of America. If you had to name one living actor associated with the slowly fading Western Genre, you would of course think of Clint Eastwood. Unforgiven is a comebak for the aforementioned genre and the west has never looked much better. Walking away with four Oscars back in 1992, not only reviecing unaminous critical ... ...small town of 'Big Whisky' Unforgiven plays out a simple, but very effective formula. The film opens with a typical cowboy individual getting his money's worth from one of the bar's prostitutes. This however is not your regular passionate encounter with a beautiful woman as it concludes with her face being cut up as she gave an innocent giggle at the cowboy's "tiny pecker". The cowboy (and his friend - his way with another girl in the next room) ...

Advantages: Different but just as good as previous westerns Disadvantages: Poor DVD Extras
A Clint Eastwood classic, both for his acting and his direction and is definitely one of the best Westerns to be seen for the last twenty years. The plot is central to the film so I'll not reveal too much of it; suffice it to say that it is a tale of justice, murder and revenge coupled with a healthy dose of humanity. The three main characters are played by Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman, I think you would be hard-pushed to find ... ...excellent performances: Hackman is suitably ruthless, Freeman comes across convincingly as a man who no longer has the stomach for killing and Eastwood as a man who can kill all too easily when he has to. With such great actors and a beautiful little screenplay to work from Eastwood doesn't need to do too much as director, but nevertheless he demonstrates his talent for getting the right shot and getting the best from his cast. Tie it all together ...

Advantages: Acting, Plot, Photography, direction, Disadvantages: Possibly to violent at times
A Superb Western of enormous proportions under the direction of Clint Eastwood. Clint Eastwood heads an all star cast including Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman. Eastwood plays William Munny, the baddest gunslinger in the whole of the west, or at least he used to be. Now he is a farmer but some kid comes to see him to take on one last job. This is where the action begins. Apart from the great plot and acting you are also treated to some amazing scenery. ...
