Yet another film that I have the privilege or reviewing not too long after it’s cinema release date and also keeping in tune with many of my other film viewings, it was watched with me suffering from the usual hangover, but in the comfort of my friends living room (Yay for downloading..) ‘Underworld – Rise of the Lycans’ was released on January 23rd, and is not currently in the cinemas anymore (well, not at my local ones!), it is however due on DVD on 18th May.

So, I sat down to watch the film, my head slightly throbbing, and my stomach just about settling…
The Plot
The film opens with narrative from Sonja, explaining the birth of Lucian the werewolf born in human form, the first of the Lycans, and how Viktor used him to create an army of Lycans to defend the Vampires in the daylight hours.
The titles roll..
The Vampires have promised the Humans in the area, protection from the wild werewolves which fill the forests, in return, of course, for a fee. On the day that the nobles are coming, Sonja, Viktors daughter, rides out to protect them as they enter the Vampire stronghold, of course the werewolves attack, and Lucian rides out to protect Sonja, and the other Vampires, something he was never allowed to do, and which results in Lucian being imprisoned, like the other Lycans. The film then progresses, as could perhaps be guessed by the title, to the rise of the Lycans.
The Cast
The film stars Michael Sheen as Lucian, who played the same character in the previous two films. He is a pretty good actor, and gives a good performance, nothing superbly impressive, but nothing that I could complain about.
Then of course, there is Bill Nighy, playing Viktor, again the same as in the previous two films. I think he gave the strongest acting, and was definitely the best, his character was conveyed well, and was the most believable.
Rhona Mitra played Sonja, and again gave a good performance, but similarly to Sheen, there was nothing massively impressive to write home about.
The Filming
Being set in the Middle Ages, the sets were incredibly realistic, the film is mainly set in the stronghold of the Vampires, which was probably filmed in some old castle or something, stone walled, stone floored. It looks convincing. The filming is done in very dark conditions, with blue tinged lighting, this further adds to the look of the film, and the medieval feeling.
The werewolves themselves, are some of the most realistic looking I have seen… hmm that sounds silly doesn’t it? I mean, if there was such thing as werewolves, I think that is what they would look like; they aren’t stupidly CGI made and mix wolves and humans very well giving a great effect.
My Opinion
As I said, I didn’t actually know the film was released, so I had no preconceptions, and having probably not seen the first two films, I didn’t know what to expect. So I just sat there, hoping for a good action packed film. The film was surprisingly short, at just under an hour and a half, although, and this isn’t a criticism, it felt like much longer.
The acting was good, and the characters were well evolved, the overall plot was interesting, but would perhaps have held more significance had I seen the original two films, which I intend to do as soon as possible. It shows how Raze and Lucian meet, and other small details. One thing, I have read which people don’t like is that it doesn’t star Kate Beckinsale’s character, Selene – since it is set before she was bitten.
The action scenes were pretty good, but the camera moved around a lot, probably to make it look more exciting, but sometimes this had the effect of being disorientating. I think the sound people did a great job, the soundtrack music was pretty good and contributed to the atmosphere, but strongest was all the odd clankings and bangs, they had a strong, echo to them, which really firmly gave the impression of it being set in the Middle Ages, and added some realism to the film.
I would definitely recommend the film, it has the basic ingredients of a good film, plenty of action, a good little bit of romance, and the cinematography was very good, except the fast movement of the action scenes. I have read some people complaining about the darkness of the film, but I think that had it been shot in bright lit conditions, it would completely lose the atmosphere.
While I wouldn’t say it is one of the best films out so far this year, it probably falls in the top five or so, and is something I could easily watch again, and as a stand-alone film (ignoring the fact it is part of a series) it contained a solid story. On that basis, I recommend it to anyone who likes this genre of films.
Advantages: Good story Disadvantages: Probably not as exciting as the previous two movies
...most entertaining one from the underworld series but rather serves the purpose of filling in gaps of the story from the first and second movie, especially on the origin of the war and the vampire council. The fighting scene maynot be as exciting/entertaining as Underworld and Underworld Evolution. There is also not a lof of special effects apart from the transformation of the werewolves but I think the main focus is really on the story and the details. ... ...I was a bit disappointed with the character of Sonja, I am not sure how to put it in words. I just feel she lacks something or the kind of attention Selene has on the previous two films. I can see that they have found someone who is kind of Selene look-alike but her character and other aspects are so different. However, she is supposed to be the character who inspires Viktor to create Selene but she is so much different to Selene. ...

Advantages: Great story, lots of questions answered and good special effects Disadvantages: None that I can think of!
Underworld - Rise Of The Lycans is the missing piece to the fabulous story of the Death Dealers and Lycans. When the first movie came out, Underworld, it raised many unanswered questions but brought an epic and spectacular story into our midst. Underworld Evolution is the second film and carrys straight on after the first. It does answer more of our questions and digs the story a little bit further. However, Underworld - Rise Of The Lycans goes back, before the two first films and back centuries ago when it all started.
This film is what we needed to put things into prespective, assuming that you've watched the two first films before watching this one. After watching the first and second, you ask yourself why did this war break out? How did it all happen? What goes wrong? Where does it lead? But after watching this film, you're sorted ...
Advantages: Brilliant story, great acting and special-effects... superbly sinister atmosphere. Disadvantages: None.

In the third instalment of the 'Underworld' series, 'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans' takes us back to the beginning...
Viktor, a cold-hearted and vile 'Death Dealer', king of the vampires, captures werewolves and turns them into slaves... these slaves are unable to turn into werewolves because of the iron collar they are forced to wear around their necks. Unlike the original breed of Lycans who cannot revert back to human form, this new breed of Lycans that Viktor has enslaved is not only less volatile, but capable of human ...
Advantages: Acting, special effects Disadvantages: Far too dark, makes it hard to see anything
You would be excused for thinking this is yet another Hollywood lazy prequel, because in many ways, it is. The Underworld saga has enjoyed a couple of enjoyable films, which have served to cinematise in quite a glossy and violent way the fantasy world of vampires and werewolves.
However, this prequel is very dark, in more ways than one. Set in medieval times, and with Kate Beckinsale seemingly nowhere in sight, we see the history behind the struggle between the vampires and the werewolves. Lycan Lucian (Michael Sheen) has something over other werewolves: the ability to change from human to werewolf. He's not alone, but he is the first of his kind, who are slaves to the coven. Lucian, as the first, is special, and is elevated to chief protector over the vampire coven that he was created by.
Victor (Bill Nighy) is the head ...
Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy revisit their roles from UNDERWORLD in this prequel to the horror-action hybrid. Sheen (THE QUEEN) stars as Lucian, a werewolf who battles vampire Viktor (Nighy, the Pirates of the Caribbean films), despite his love for Viktor's daughter Sonja. Kate Beckinsale might have departed the series, but fellow dark-haired beauty Rhona Mitra (DOOMSDAY) fills fans desires for a sexy heroine in her role as Sonja.

The performances are forceful enough to keep things interesting even when no one is sprouting fangs or drinking blood (Variety, 26/01/2009)
DVD Description
The third film in the UNDERWORLD saga goes back hundreds of years to explain the origins of the feud between the vampire Death Dealers and the werewolf Lycans. Taking over directing duties from Len Wiseman is rookie Patrick Tatoupolos, known for his creature-designing duties in GODZILLA (1998), I AM LEGEND (2007), and the first two films in this series. Less an action-horror film than an old-fashioned 'sword-and-sandal' film with monsters, RISE OF THE LYCANS finally gets to the root of why those vampires and werewolves really can't stand each other. Ruled by Viktor (Bill Nighy, VALKYRIE), the aristocratic, vampiric Death Dealers keep the wolf-like Lycans as slaves. When a captive Lycan woman births a human boy, Viktor resists the urge to kill it, instead naming him Lucian and keeping him as a pet. Lucian (Michael Sheen, FROST/NIXON) grows up to be a blacksmith with the ability to change between human and wolf and begins a clandestine romance with Viktor’s daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra, DOOMSDAY). Viktor learns of this forbidden romance and takes drastic steps to ensure that Sonja will never be able to see Lucian again. Lucian, in retaliation, leads a Lycan slave revolt, resulting in an all-out assault on Viktor’s kingdom.
Though viewers who have skipped the first two instalments of the saga may feel a little left out when it comes to the mythology of the series, LYCANS hits the ground running and doesn’t allow much time for questions. While Sheen has been lauded for his work in more traditionally dramatic films, here he gives his all to every growl and battle cry. Mitra is an appealing presence as Sonja, and Nighy is visibly relishing the opportunity to glower in his blue contacts and chew the moonlight-bathed scenery.
