When the first Underworld movie was released in 2003 it was widely slated but it gathered an almost cult like status. Based on the storyline of the first, it was no real surprise that a sequel would be made and this is it.
It is an enjoyable watch and although it again was panned by many, it will probably be very popular now that it has been released on DVD. The story is set up for a third and final film and I would not be surprised if director Len Wiseman has had a trilogy planned since the start. In many ways, this is better than the first film as it answers a lot of questions left unanswered in the first film but does still leave many others.
I would recommend this film to anyone who watched the first and enjoyed it, and if you didn't see the original, hire them both out and enjoy an evening of Kate Beckinsale in a tight fitting leather cat-suit.
STORY
Before I continue a bit of background information about the first film is required
so if you haven't seen it and don't want to read any spoilers, scroll down a bit (nb. some of this is recapped at start of this film anyway).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A war has been raging for many thousands of years between the Vampires and the Lycans (Werewolves). Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is a Death Dealer, assigned to hunt down and kill the last of the Lycans but she uncovers a plan to create a hybrid Lycan/Vampire. As she fights to understand this, she uncovers truths about her past and questions about who actually started the war. The film ends with Selene killing her father figure Victor (Bill Nighy) when she discovers that it was he, not the Lycans who killed her family. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the start of this film we are told that, the history of the two races comes from many years ago when the two sons of an immortal were bitten. Marcus was bitten by a bat (creating vampires) whilst William was bitten by a wolf (creating Lycans). Unlike the Lycans seen in the first film who were able to change from human to wolf form and back, these original Lycans were stuck in their wolf form and savaged villages and towns. Marcus enlisted the help of Victor (Bill Nighy) to help control his brother in return for immortality, i.e. Victor was bitten to become a vampire.
Fast-forward to the modern day and Marcus has been awakened due to the death of Victor. He is intent on releasing his brother from the cage in which he has been imprisoned for many years and this requires him to find a key, part of which is being carried by the hybrid, Michael (Scott Speedman). He also needs to capture Seline (Beckinsale) as her blood hides the key to where William is hidden.
Unlike the first film where Michael was confused and struggling to come to terms with what he is, this film he starts to use his powers and has several fights in the process of working out what is happening. Seline also discovers more about her past and the end of the film questions her future, leaving room for a third film.
DVD EXTRAS
As I only hired this movie rather than buy it, I didn't get time to watch the extras but they are plentiful and based on the extras on the first film, probably well worth a watch. ° Feature Length Commentary By Director Len Wiseman Editor Nick De Toth Production Designer Patrick Tatopoulos And Stunt Coordinator Brad Martin ° Bloodlines From Script To Screen ° The Hybrid Theory ° Making Monsters Roar ° The War Rages On ° Building A Saga ° Music And Mayhem ° Music Video Her Portrait In Black
PERFORMANCES
Kate Beckinsale - I was less impressed by her performance in this sequel but I think that this is mainly due to the fact that her character is slightly less central this time around. However, it is still a very convincing performance and with the make-up, she looks perfect for the role. Scott Speedman - As his character starts to discover himself in this film, Speedman's role is more pronounce. He does a good job although he does still seem to struggle a bit with who he is. Bill Nighy - Despite being killed in the first film, Nighy makes a return in this film in flashbacks to the past. His role is somewhat limited but he is very convincing as a vampire. Tony Curran - Plays the very menacing character of Marcus who although quite scary, does occasionally show a tender side. Very well performed. Derek Jacobi - I was surprised to see someone as high brow as him in a film such as this but he does a very good job as the mysterious Alexander Corvinus.
