--- Brief Synopsis ---
The USS Missouri, once the flag ship of the US Navy is due to be decommissioned after over 40 years of service (the Japanese signed their surrender on her deck in 1946). She has one more tour to carry out, to the port where she will be decommissioned. Travelling with a skeleton crew this was intended to be an easy shake down cruse.
On board is Chef Casey Ryback (Steven Seagal) a former navy seal team captain. On a mission in Panama his team was almost completely decimated due to faulty intelligence, on his return he hit his commanding officer. This offence meant that he could only hold the rank of either yeoman or chef. On the Missouri he is Captain Adam's (Patrick O'Neal) private chef.
Captain Adam's birthday is due to occur during this tour, and Ryback is intent of preparing a great meal for the captain. Commander Krill (Gary Busey), the ships first officer, has other plans. He's booked a band to fly in accompanied by a former Playboy centre fold Jordan Tate (played by the real Miss July 1989, Erika Eleniak). On arriving the band set up and Tate is give some travel sickness pills, she some what ODs on them and promptly falls asleep having climbed into the cake.
Krill attempts clear all none essential areas, including the kitchen, but Ryback has other ideas and hits Krill. He is then locked in the meat locker, because if he was placed in the brig the Captain would have to be informed.
The fun really kicks off when the band starts to play. The mess hall is filled with crew and officers, and then Commander Krill suddenly appears in drag as the captain's 'date'. He heads up to the captains cabin to 'escort' him, on arriving he shoots in the head. Back in the mess hall the lead singer of the band, William Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones), asks for the highest ranking officer in the room to stand up, he then shoots him in the head. The crew is largely taken hostage and placed in the bowls of the ship.
Ryback escapes and is forced to retake the ship, save the crew, and stop the thermo-nuclear warheads from being offloaded on to a submarine. And don't worry Miss Jordan comes along for the trip (and jumps out of the cake). This culminates in a great climax where Ryback takes on Strannix in a huge knife fight (the fight was huge, not the knifes).
--- Characters and Performances ---
Chef Casey Ryback is the hero of the story, the ex navy seal plays the John McClane: Die Hard role to perfection. Of course Segal was not cast for his superb acting, but that is not a problem because his role require very little real emotion.
Our main antihero for the film is the band's lead singer Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones) who is an ex member of the CIA. He plays the psychotic killer role really well and even manages to bring some classic comedy moments. A great early film for Jones which really brought out some great acting ability.
Cmdr Krill (Gary Busey) plays the great double crossing roll and pulls it of well. You really believe that he has some deep psychological problem and has probably been beaten as a child. Busey really manages to show the power struggle between Strannix and Krill.
Com Meaney (who played O'Brian in Star Trek) plays a great side kick role which helped to launch a real acting career. The only real link in the chain would be Miss. July (Erika Eleniak) whose acting is way below sub par and lets down the film, the only reason she's worth being in the film is for when she jumps out of the cake.
Overall the majority of the performances are really good and add great flavour to what would normally be a simple action film. Great casting all round with only one mistake mentioned above.
--- Direction ---
The direction is good, not surprising, considering the director (Andrew Davis) went on to direct 'the Fugitive' a year later. There are no obvious flaws in the direction which allows the film to move fluidly and without any obvious interference. The director's only mistake was lack of accuracy, missing out of several continuity errors (can be found when looking online), however these do not impact the film unless you're really picky or watch it a lot. Although this is the director's first large film he went on to direct several more big films (the Fugitive, a Perfect Murder, and Collateral Damage).
--- Cast List ---
Steven Seagal - Casey Ryback (our main man and the hero) Patrick O'Neal - Capt. Adams (the ship's captain, he gets shot really early) Gary Busey - Cmdr. Krill (the double crossing first officer who hates Ryback) Glenn Morshower - Ens. Taylor (a suck up junior officer who also hate Ryback) Leo Alexander - Lt. Smart John Rottger - Cmdr. Green (the operations officer who promptly gets shot in the mess hall) Tommy Lee Jones - William Strannix (The leader of the terrorist group taking control of the ship) Erika Eleniak - Jordan Tate (Miss July 1989, who becomes Ryback's unwitting sidekick) Colm Meaney - Doumer (the evil side kick to Strannix, full of 'witty' remarks)

--- Special Features ---
The features on the DVD are limited; this is most likely due to its early production date (before DVDs really took off). The film contains the standard theatrical trailer which isn't anything special and doesn't add anything to the film. There is also a set of production notes which show bits and pieces about how the film was made, but once again this contains nothing of interest and really isn't worth wasting time watching.
--- Cost and Availability ---
You can buy this at any good video store (HMV, Virgin etc.) for an RRP of £19.99. It is also possible to get it from Amazon at the much cheaper price of £5.97.
--- Overall Thoughts ---
The film is great and I find that I can watch it over and over again without getting bored. It contains some great action sequences that are really well choreographed. If your looking for great acting then look elsewhere, but if you looking for and easy to follow and great looking film then you've found it. The performances are good considering the direction is well above par. I would definitely recommend this film.
Advantages: Seagal's best film to-date. Disadvantages: Not Many, Although a bit too reliant on the martial arts in places.

After ... ...was not the director on Under Siege 2
The film itself does have a very interesting storyline although totally unbelievable as we yet again get to see the usual one man arm out to save the day and be the hero type film thrown at us. There are some great action scenes for us to enjoy from Steven Seagal and Tommy Lee Jones does play a good part in the film but I have to say I found Gary Busey to grab hold of his scenes and totally ruin them instantly. ...

Advantages: Very action orientated, funny at times, Seagal and Jones on top form Disadvantages: Questionable performances from other cast members
When a Navy battleship is hijacked by ex military personnel things look pretty bleak from the off; led by ex CIA Agent William Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones) the men come onto the ship posing as musicians, their aim is to steal the ships Tomahawk Cruise Missiles and they’re willing to kill anyone in their path. The ships only hope lies in the seemingly less than capable hands of the ships chef.
What the hijackers don’t know is that this isn’t just a ... ...Seal and is highly trained in weapons and martial arts. Casey is locked in the freezer to begin with but once escaping he sets about his mission to bring down the hijackers and save hundreds of lives single handedly. This is a classic 90’s action movie, there’s not a huge amount of plot involved and even the plot that is present doesn’t really need a lot of attention paid to it. Any movie with Steven Seagal in it seem to have a very simple narrative ...

...and a respectable bad guy. Under Siege has both: Steven Seagal as the heroic chef/ex Navy Seal, and Tommy Lee Jones as the psychotic '60s rocker. The latter, along with Gary Busey, seizes control of the ship's nuclear arsenal. We, of course, all know that Seagal is eventually going to kick arse, but it's just a question of how and when. The formula has been repeated numerous times in action films, and with the disillusioned Gary Busey and over-the-top Tommy Lee Jones as the villains, Seagal has something good to effectively work his ego against. In terms of the action itself, there are some decent scenes. ...

Having left the Navy Kasey Ryback has opted for a more relaxed life running a restaurant. When it comes to escorting his niece Sarah to her parents grave his relaxed life gets disturbed when their train is hijacked by terrorists. It falls to Ryback to save the lives of not only his niece and those on the train but also the inhabitants of 2 US cities targeted for disaster. Advantages: Hilarious Disadvantages: Everything about this film is awful
1995's UnderSiege 2 is one of those films which is so unbelievable it's just ridiculous. This film plays on the success of the original, which is a creditable action film, but the second coming simply drags the short series into the realms of fantasy.
The comical plot is about a train which is hijacked by a group of terrorists. The main bad guy is a former US defence employee who designed a destructive satellite (now under his control) and who happens to be a computer whiz and naturally a 'bit mental'. To look after him, a former navy seal and colleague of the films main protagonist (played by Steven Seagal) is on hand... how original. There are of course the usual array of bad guys who make Seagal 'look good', and a passenger on board the train is a relative of Seagal's character. Thus, it is Seagal's job to stop the train ...
Advantages: Lot's of action Disadvantages: Tired plot, cop cliches
from his roles in Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge.
Jean-Francois Richet has made a stylish film in Assault On Precinct 13. The pace is just right, with no overly violent scenes, and no boring, drawn out soul searching by any characters. For many of the action scenes, Richet opts to use only a couple of cameras, which pan to follow the action. At times I find this irritating. It's quite disorientating and makes me a little sea-sick. Richet also manipulates the plot so that the two female characters end up in skimpy outfits. I found this crass, and in this day and age it's unforgivable.
GUNS AND SWEARING
Assault On Precinct 13 is a 15 certificate. There's a lot of violence and some blood. Swearing is abundant. I have no problem with this - if I was undersiege by masked gunmen, I'd swear too!
