Uncle Buck is one of those films that is repeated on TV regularly, but still one I enjoy no matter how many times I have seen it.
~The Story~
Bob and Cindy Russell (Played by Garrett M. Brown and Elaine Bromka) have recently moved from Indianapolis to Chicago with their three kids, when one night they receive a phone call to say that Cindy's father has had a heart attack. Not really knowing many people in the area, the couple struggle to find someone to babysit their children, 15 year old Tia (Jean Kelly), 8 year old Miles (Macaulay Culkin) and 6 year old Maizy (Gaby Hoffman). Bob suggests his brother Buck, but Cindy point blank refuses as she thinks Buck is too irresponsible. Bob tries to persuade her that Buck is not as bad as she thinks and realising they don't have any other option she reluctantly agrees.
Buck (John Candy) lives alone in a small flat and doesn't work, instead choosing to bet on horse races. His girlfriend Chanice is becoming increasingly fed up with his behaviour, and gets him a job at her place of work. She warns him that he better show up the next day as she is sick of his excuses. It is that same night that he receives the call from his brother asking him to babysit the children.
When Buck arrives at the house, it is evident that things are not going to go smoothly. As soon as John and Cindy are out of the house he manages to break one of their priceless plates. The younger children, Miles and Maizy adore their uncle, but 15 year old Tia isn't so convinced. Tia is a very stroppy teenager with a lot of attitude, mainly aimed towards her mother as she is annoyed about the move from Indianapolis. She doesn't like Buck and thinks he is useless, and when he starts being overprotective and embarrassing her in front of her boyfriend, she gets angry and decides to take revenge.
Will Uncle Buck and Tia ever see eye to eye? And how will Buck cope in his new role as a parent? You'll have to watch to find out!
~What I thought~
This is a great film, I remember loving it as a kid - some of the humour, such as Buck microwaving socks really appeals to children, but now watching it as an adult it's still just as funny, but you notice things that went over your head as a child! Some of the humour is quite childish though, so may not appeal to everyone.
John Candy plays the part of Buck really well, I think he was a fantastic comedy actor, he has great timing, and despite the fact that the character is so clumsy and gets everything wrong you still feel sympathy for the character. Jean Kelly is also great as Tia, the hormonal teenager, who thinks she knows best, and also Macaulay Culkin as Miles is great at a time just before Home Alone, when he was still in his cute stage.
Whilst the plot is fairly predictable and it's easy to guess how it turns out, I still find it a really enjoyable film, and John Candy's loveable character of Buck, really makes the movie what it is. Despite being made in 1989, the film hasn't really dated too badly, and it's a great gentle comedy for a Sunday afternoon.
