Introduction ~~ I know that this is one hell of a corny film but it does not take away the fact that this is my all-time favourite film, so I do apologize if this is one heck of a biased review. Despite Uncle Buck been rather cheesy it was the film that made Macauley Culkin – a rather forgotten actor now who was once huge. The story is quite predictable and right from the start its quite obvious where the film is going but John Candy adds a quite brilliant charm to the film and provides plenty of humour.
Story ~~ Bucks brother Bob played by Garrett M. Browns father in law has a heart-attack so Bob and his wife head to the hospital. Slight problem though, they have three children and its too short notice to call anyone to look after them. So as a last resort Bob and his snobbish wife phone Uncle Buck, the member of their family that they see as “common” Buck happily agrees to look after the children and arrives down a posh, Chicago suburb driving a classic, huge American car belching out grey clouds of smoke. The parents hurry off to the hospital and Buck predictably successfully attempts to be a good parent. His slobbish, light-hearted and fun character wins the love of the children which is of coarse no surprise. Though loveable Uncle Buck does have his ups and downs on the way with awkward and miserable15 year old teen niece played by Jean Kelly who resents Buck. Buck also has the difficult task of keeping his girlfriend played by Amy Madigan sweet. She owns a tyre store and begins to get fed up of Buck and his capricious way of life.
Cast ~~ The main star behind making this 80’s classic work is John Candy who plays our friend Uncle Buck. Though Jean Kelly who plays Tia adds depth to the film and shows Bucks true colours. Gaby Hoffman stars as cute little Maizy Russell Bucks little girl niece. And Culkin stars as Miles Russell Bucks little boy nephew. Director John Hughes who was relatively inexperienced when he made Uncle Buck makes several mistakes. He seems to portray Tia as too mean and horrible that when her nice side does come out we find it hard to believe. Tia suddenly turns mean, moody and grumpy to a happy and joyful character. The change is so quick and sudden that we are led to believe that she has a split personality. Director Hughes also seems to go over the top in one scene. He meets the children’s primary school teacher and is incredibly rude and abrasive to them, the scene appears neither funny nor realistic.
Overall ~~ This film does have its flaws and is a bit jerky (not literally!! :) lol) but it resulted to a minor classic. There are several hilarious moments in the film and despite little happening in the story its still a great family film.

Good review as always Jim, but 'minor classic'? That's pushing it a bit innit? Still, each to their own, I suppose! So you reckon I'm 'in' with the Mooster, eh? We can but live in hope Jim, we can but live in hope...
