~The Story~
Bob and Cindy Russell (Played by Garrett M. Brown and Elaine Bromka) have recently moved from Indianapolis to Chicago with their three kids, when one night they receive a phone call to say that Cindy's father has had a heart attack. Not really knowing many people in the area, the couple struggle to find someone to babysit their children, 15 year old Tia (Jean Kelly), 8 year old Miles (Macaulay Culkin) and 6 year old Maizy (Gaby Hoffman). Bob suggests his brother Buck, but Cindy point blank refuses as she thinks Buck is too irresponsible. Bob tries to persuade her that Buck is not as bad as she thinks and realising they don't have any other option she reluctantly agrees.
Buck (John Candy) lives alone in a small flat and doesn't work, instead choosing to bet on horse races. His girlfriend Chanice is becoming increasingly fed up with his behaviour, and gets him a job at her place of work. She warns him that he better show up the next day as she is sick of his excuses. It is that same night that he receives the call from his brother asking him to babysit the children.
When Buck arrives at the house, it is evident that things are not going to go smoothly. As soon as John and Cindy are out of the house he manages to break one of their priceless plates. The younger children, Miles and Maizy adore their uncle, but 15 year old Tia isn't so convinced. Tia is a very stroppy teenager with a lot of attitude, mainly aimed towards her mother as she is annoyed about the move from Indianapolis. She doesn't like Buck and thinks he is useless, and when he starts being overprotective and embarrassing her in front of her boyfriend, she gets angry and decides to take revenge.
Will Uncle Buck and Tia ever see eye to eye? And how will Buck cope in his new role as a parent? You'll have to watch to find out!
~What I thought~
This is a great film, I remember loving it as a kid - some of the humour, such as Buck microwaving socks really appeals to children, but now watching it as an adult it's still just as funny, but you notice things that went over your head as a child! Some of the humour is quite childish though, so may not appeal to everyone.
John Candy plays the part of Buck really well, I think he was a fantastic comedy actor, he has great timing, and despite the fact that the character is so clumsy and gets everything wrong you still feel sympathy for the character. Jean Kelly is also great as Tia, the hormonal teenager, who thinks she knows best, and also Macaulay Culkin as Miles is great at a time just before Home Alone, when he was still in his cute stage.
Whilst the plot is fairly predictable and it's easy to guess how it turns out, I still find it a really enjoyable film, and John Candy's loveable character of Buck, really makes the movie what it is. Despite being made in 1989, the film hasn't really dated too badly, and it's a great gentle comedy for a Sunday afternoon.

...actor of our time.
Uncle Buck was the perfect vehicle for John Candy to show off his talents, a witty script, perfect cast and a universally appealing bonding theme made this the best comedy of the eighties.
John Candy (herein known as JC) lays the part of Buck Russell, a loud, lazy, loveable slob who ekes out a living by betting on the horses and scrounging off his long suffering girlfriend Chanice, played by the brilliant Amy Madigan.
JC's brother ... ...breakfast, Miles and Maisie love Uncle Buck at first sight but Tia has a real problem with him and sets out to make his life with them unbearable.
The main story in this film is all about the relationship between Tia and Buck with plenty of sub plots and comic set pieces to keep the viewer laughing.
Tia has a boyfriend called, suitably enough, Bug. Buck can see right through him and knows he is trouble but Tia is resentful of his intrusion on her ...

...of a biased review.
Despite Uncle Buck been rather cheesy it was the film that made Macauley Culkin – a rather forgotten actor now who was once huge. The story is quite predictable and right from the start its quite obvious where the film is going but John Candy adds a quite brilliant charm to the film and provides plenty of humour. Story ~~

Buck happily agrees to look after the children and arrives down a posh, Chicago suburb driving a classic, huge American car belching out grey clouds of smoke. The parents hurry off to the hospital and Buck predictably successfully attempts to be a good parent. His slobbish, light-hearted and fun character wins the love of the children which ...

Uncle Buck is one of the great classic comedy films of the eighties starring John Candy as Uncle Buck This film was also one of Macauly Culkins first appearances. This is a great film and it shows off John Candy's great acting, he plays Buck who is called as a last resort to babysit for his brother Bob's 3 children after they find out his father in law has had a heart attack. Bob's wife Cindy and Buck don't get along but Bob reassures Cindy that ... ...find their parents gone and Uncle Buck in the kitchen cooking breakfast. He is an immediate hit with Maisie and Miles but there is a problem with Tia the oldest of the three, they just don't hit it off right from the start, but this doesn't put Buck off in the slightest.
This builds the main part of the story Buck and Tia's relatioinship. There a lot of ups and downs starting with Tia's boyfriend Bug who Buck takes an instant dislike to, he knows ...

Advantages: John Candy; other good, if less noteworthy, performances; funny Disadvantages: A weak resolution
John Hughes' UNCLE BUCK was released in 1989 and today is one of, if not his best films, his most beloved films.
Buck Russell is a complete disaster of a human being. His health is as unreliable as his weight in kilos, he drinks too much, smokes too many cigars, gambles for a living, he lives in a dump, drives one large steaming dump of a backfiring car and he finds it difficult to gain the respect of anyone he cares about. One is his fiancé, at ... ...another town. It doesn't take Uncle Buck long to win over the two youngest but it proves far more problematic when it comes to winning over blossoming teenager Tia, all the while trying to maintain his strained relationship with his fiancé before his brother and sister-in-law arrive back home to witness the conclusion to their illogical choice of baby-sitter.
Everybody loves UNCLE BUCK and it's not hard to see why. It has a kind of sweet eighties ...

Advantages: Really funny, John Candy and Dan Akroyd are great Disadvantages: None that I can think of!
I once watched this film on TV one summer and thought is was great. I went out straight away and bought it on DVD so I could watch is again.
I have to say that this film is great! So funny and so typical. The events that happen are the kind of things that would happen to me when on holiday.
The great actors in this film are John Candy and Dan Akroyd. I can not see any other actors pulling off the parts that they play. Its really sad that John Candy passed away as he was a great actor and this is one of his best films (apart from UncleBuck!).
