I'm very shocked that 'Unbreakable' got such awful reviews because of the story's main element that seemed to come straight from comic books. While it was a definite change from the Sixth Sense, a tale of a young boy who could see and speak to ghosts, I found Unbreakable to be no less poignant.
Bruce Willis plays David Dunn, a football arena security guard who walks away the sole survivor of a terrible train wreck - - without a single scratch on him.
After the accident, David meets an enigmatic comic book store owner named Elijah, played by Samuel Jackson, who is convinced that comic book heroes truly do walk the earth.
David is forced, initially kicking and screaming, through a journey of his past, where he forces himself to remember who he is and what he is capable of. His first step is going to see his mother, from whom he learns that he has never been sick a day in his life, literally.
The paranormal elements are more subtle than in The Sixth Sense. Shyamalan relies on the lesser-known psychometry as one of David's abilities.
My favorite scenes were the interaction between Bruce Willis and Spencer Treat Jamison (who played David's son, Joseph). Each was a real turning point in the story; a moment of significance where David Dunn grew emotionally.
One of these turning points didn't even have any dialogue- merely the 'knowing look' between father and son behind wife Audrey's (played by Robin Penn Wright) back, as David pushes the newspaper towards his son. The newspaper whose headline tells of a mysterious good samaritan aiding two girls whose parents had been killed by a thief who had broken into their home.
I believe that it is the human quality of this film that most appealed to me. It raised the question as to what makes someone a hero, posed at a time when people as a whole were often emphatically cynical and distrustful of others.
An interesting "special feature" to this DVD set is a piece of original artwork by Alex Ross featuring both David Dunn and Elijah. The second "special features" disc contains deleted scenes (something I always look forward to on DVDs), an excerpt from one of M. Night Shyamalan's early films, and an interview with Samuel L. Jackson.
This is one of the few films in my DVD library that I will gladly watch over and over again - year after year, without being bored.
I became a M. Night Shyamalan fan the first time I watched the Sixth Sense. Unbreakable has only increased my loyalty to this unique filmmaker. I hope he continues gracing his with his work for some time to come.
