‘How the comic collection going Brodie?’ – Brandi
‘Great, oh wait comics are for kids, I don’t collect comics’ - Brodie
Unbreakable is the much-anticipated follow up to The Sixth Sense by M Night Shyamalan and like it predecessor also features Bruce Willis. Though not officially the next film he wrote after The Sixth Sense (that was Stuart Little minus the fart jokes which he claims dusney added themselves, but he wrote it for his child), he must of took the time to figure out what he was going to do. I wasn’t a really big of The Sixth Sense and didn’t see it in its theatrical run, had the ending spoilt and eventually caught it on DVD, I preferred the similarly themed Stir Of Echoes starring Kevin Bacon, but the teaser trailer for Unbreakable made it seem very interesting and gave away nothing much, just what it has too, it catch peoples attention.
The film opens with a black screen in which various facts about comics appear on the screen, like the amount sold every year. It then switches to a shop and in the back room a women as given birth to a baby which was supervised by a shop assistant the doctor arrives and the baby is crying a lot, the doctor examines the baby and asks if it was dropped, they reply it wasn’t. The doctor then tells everyone that the baby has had its arms and legs broken while in the womb.
It then switches to the character played by Bruce Willis who is named David Dunn, who is traveling by train back form New York to Philadelphia. A young lady sits next to him and he discreetly removes his wedding ring and starts a conversation, this embarrasses he young lady and she moves seat, so David puts the ring back on. Next thing we see is the train starts to speed up and shake, David looks around and sees other passengers starting to worry. The screen flashes and the scene ends.
Next we see a young black boy talking to his mother, he wont leave the
room as he has a broken arm, it is found out that his was the baby from the start and was born with a rare disease that makes his bones amazingly brittle and break with any sort of pressure. His mother persuades him to go out side by leaving him a present on the park bench, a comic book and one with a twist ending at that, she says there will be one there every day for him.
The film then skips back to David and he is waking up in hospital, the doctor informs him he was in a train accident and amazingly he is the only survivor, not only that but he hasn’t a single cut on him, he escaped totally unharmed while 180 other people died. He walks out and meets his wife and son and goes home, when he returns home we find out his marriage isn’t going too well and he and his wife even sleep in separate beds. He was returning form New York from a job interview so he could move there away from the family, given this he still seems to have a good relationship with his son. He goes back to work, as a security guard, and when he finishes finds a card on is windscreen asking ‘How many days he’s been sick’, the card is from a place named Limited Edition.
It then skips to Samuel L Jackson’s character, the black boy who is now fully grown, and he owns a comic book store named Limited Edition, David goes to visit him and he informs him that he thinks David is a superhero. David doesn’t believe this and thinks Elijah (Samuel L Jackson) is mad, but his son isn’t so sure and then when events start occurring that could lead this is to be true David starts to wonder as well.
Going to see this film you may be thinking it will be a lot like The Sixth Sense, but you will be wrong, you will probably be surprised by the film whatever you expected it to be, but only a few will probably like it as it doesn’t have the same wide appeal that The Sixth Sense did. The film and its plot go in such a strange direction and stretch the believability so far that many people will just not enjoy it, but its easy to see this film was written backwards. Shyamalan must of wrote the ending first and then wrote the rest of the film leading up to it, as good as the ending is the preceding 20 minutes are sloppy and rushed and the film dives into the ending too soon.
The direction by Shyamalan is exciting and oozes confidence, whether it’s the train journey where we view Bruce Willis’s conversation with the women through the eyes of the little girl sitting in front of him through the gaps between the seats, or the conversation between the young Elijah and his mother totally viewed trough the reflection in a switched off TV screen or grown up Elijah and a man discussing a piece of comic art in his gallery completely by the reflection in the picture. This may annoy some people but I thought it was a cool way of presenting some scenes, Elijah says most people call him Mr. Glass and most times we see him early in the film is through the reflection of a glass object. It’s the quality of the direction that may make the film seem better than it is and adds to the quality feel of the film. Add to this the superb locations that are dark and gloomy while remaining stylish, the Train Station is a prime example of this, you can feel Elijah’s bones break through a mixture of great camera work and loud noises. What the film does well is that at first it never lets us know if David is a superhero or not, is Elijah just a comic freak that has went a bit too far, or is is an normal guy who beleives that there is someone that is polar oppsoite to him and instead of his brittle bones have amazingly strong ones. The film was alos filmed and displayed in the aspect of widescreen that is available, but most of the action takes place only in the centre, with the left and right sides basically being still, this is similar ot a comic strip where most of the action takes place in the centre of the window.
Performances are great with Willis being good as David Dunn, the man who doesn’t really seem to want much in life, and doesn’t know whether to believe Samuel L Jackson or not. Samuel L Jackson gives a strong performance as the weak and brittle Elijah, who can be brave and daring when he wants something, and is even willing to break some bones to prove his point. As Megan Dunn, David's wife, Robin Wright Penn is very good. She still cares very much about her husband, but we never really find out why the relationship went sour. The superhero aspect of the film is played with no humour at all, which may make it harder to believe for some people, but most of the common comic attributes are present. Bruce Willis’s security guards wears a long slicker jacket that look remarkable like a cape, many of the locations are given a fantasy style fell through lighting effects and Bruce even has a kind of spiderman sense which helps him catch people who are sneaking weapons into the stadium where he works. Remind me never to visit Philadelphia if it rains half as much as it does in this film then I dont want to be there.
The score works well and is very similar to the one found in The Sixth Sense, loud noises when Elijah breaks a bone makes us wince and feel the pain, the city is constantly in the dark and covered in rain. The score is by James Newton Howard who is no novice to the supernatural style score, by appying his trade to both The Sixth Sense and Stir of Echoes last year and others including The Devils Adovcate. As in The Sixth Sense the film focusses alot on the main characters and their relationship with each other and their families.
Spoilers Spoilers
The film does have its flaws though, mainly near the end, when David discovers he is a superhero he goes to solve a crime, he does this once then the film ends shortly after. It doesn’t display his talents enough to make us believe he is a super hero. The film never tells us what happens to David after the ending, if he continues to fight crime, if he tells his wife or what happens to his family, as I said the end seems very rushed. The amount of people that David finds that have broken the law, most being pretty big offenses, just by going to the train station is very unrealistic. For a superhero film theres in very little action at all most of the film is conversation based and there are no great special effects needed, the film works because of the great atmosphere it builds.
Spoilers end Spoilers end
Shyamalan must be a comic fan or must of done a lot of research about them for a lot of scenes in the movie, even Osteogenesis Imperfecta is a real but rare disease and is accurately portrayed in the movie. This film starts quite fast but soon slows down until the end, where it finishes too early, when you don’t expect it too and ultimately you may be disappointed when it does end. While you can compare both Unbreakable and The Sixth Sense they are very different movies, with Unbreakable much more in a fantasy vein than The Sixth Sense, but it is also a great movie worthy of the same kind of success that The Sixth Sense got. Basing a movie around comic books can be a risky business as Kevin Smith as found out in the past.

This film certainly has an interesting concept and makes a nice chnage from the more traditional hero films. I really enjoyed it, although I must say it wasnt quite what I was expecting! Deserves to be as popular as Sixth Sense I reckon. Good review, sharon
