Robert Aldrich pulls no punches in his unrelentingly brutal story of a reign of terror ... more
perpetrated on Arizona settlers by a bitter Apache warrior and the cavalry's frustrated attempts to stop him. Burt Lancaster, a longtime Aldrich collaborator and star of the similar 1954Western Apache, brings his laconic, quietly authoritative presence to the role of McIntosh, a blunt-speaking, introspective old army scout with more respect than hate for his enemy. A very young Bruce Davison is the green-as-a-sapling Lieutenant DeBuin, fresh from West Point and filled with Christian ideals, thrown into the field against the vicious, tactically brilliant Ulzana. DeBuin is shocked and appalled at Ulzana's brutality--torturing male homesteaders to death, raping the women, leaving a trail of mutilated corpses--and as he struggles to understand Ulzana his values of Christian charity soon melt into racist hatred. Ulzana's tactics were familiar to Americans in 1972 who followed the war in Vietnam and the guerrilla attacks of the Vietcong. LikeThe Wild Bunchbefore it, Ulzana's Raid removes the sentimentality of Western ideals in its harsh portrayal of the violent world, though unlike Sam Peckinpah, Aldrich leaves the violence off-screen and allows the audience to see only the horrific aftermath. (These scenes are often graphic and not recommended for the squeamish.) It's a disturbing and powerful film, where the concept of good guys and bad guys becomes meaningless and the battle between cultures ultimately comes down to survival in a harsh world. --Sean Axmaker

Advantages: reliable, very upgradable, fast and very over-clockable. Disadvantages: no HT support, only USB 1.1, did anybody get built in LAN?
.1 Platinum. Since I've never used the built in one, I can't comment on it. Generally though they are not up to the standard of the high end Creative cards.
I installed 2x 200gig IBM 7200rpm deskstars on the primary standard ide, and a dvd writer and cd writer on the secondary standard ide. On the Highpoint I installed 4x 200gig IBM 7200rpm desktars (primary ide master+slave and secondary ide master+slave). I use them as extra drives only, not as RAID. This is because if you upgrade the highpoint BIOS it can sometimes break the RAID stripe. I didn't want to risk that. This board supports ATA100 max. ATA133 drives work fine, but you will only get ATA100 transfer speeds through the bus.
This board started life with a socket 478 Pentium4 Williamette processor at 1.5GHz. This lasted me for a while, and ran happily when clocked with a 110fsb x4 ...
Advantages: Pleasant smell Disadvantages: Does not kill flies in seconds; often not at all.
I am very disappointed with Johnson Raid Fly & Wasp Killer. It is quite useless at getting rid of house flies in my area. Far from killing flying insects in seconds, you have to spray very long bursts at individual flies to have any effect on them. Then they often just get up again! The scent is nice. Have the makers put air freshener in the aerosols by mistake?
In the area where I live, it has been reported and acknowledged by the council that there have been an unusually high number of flies this summer. My environment is clean and waste disposal and recycling services are efficient. This particular brand of fly spray seems to be the only one available in local stores and supermarkets that I frequent. Is it the case that for health and safety reasons the power and effectiveness of products like this has been drastically curtailed ...
Advantages: online capacity expansion, deals with hard disc problems better Disadvantages: slow compared to software RAID
Dead cheap raid 5 card compared to similar others (£50 cheaper). It also allows online capacity upgrades, which basically means you can expand the size of the RAID without destroying the data on the RAID. handy!
The main reason for me getting a RAID 5 hardware solution rather than a software solution again, is the fact that even if one of the hard discs on a software RAID5 becomes slightly iffy, it drops it, and you have to rebuild!!! With hardware RAID5, it'll automatically recover, and will rebuild in the background.
This fits into my PCI-33 slot, but can alos connect to a PCI64. mmmm tasty... It has LEDs on the card for RAID access, CRC, and Drive access (4 LEDS) and it has all the necessary connectors for external LEDS too! I nearly creamed myself with the thought of 6 blue LEDS connected externally to the RAID card.
I would ...
In this story of the Old West, Lancaster is assigned to aid the US Cavalry in tracking down the notorious Apache warrior Ulzana and his band of renegade Indians.
Angered at their mistreatment by whites, a group of renegade Apaches escape from their reservation and embark on a rampage of murder, rape and destruction. A veteran army scout, McIntosh (Bruce Lancaster), and an unseasoned young cavalry officer, DeBuin (Bruce Davison), are assigned to track down the malcontented natives. As DeBuin, McIntosh, and their party venture into the unfriendly landscape, issues start to surface about to the morality of their extermination mission. Soon the party of supposedly civil white men are fighting amongst themselves, divided about the task at hand. As much as the moralists struggle, their efforts to stop Ulzana's Raid seem fruitless. On the heels of DIRTY DOZEN and WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE, director Robert Aldrich delivers another smash film. Intelligent and edgy, ULZANA'S RAID features all of the standard Aldrich storytelling techniques: characters full of suppressed madness and prejudices, a moral dilemma, and a loaded gun with a slippery trigger waiting to be squeezed. Add the scorching heat of the desert as a backdrop and Aldrich conjures forth another masterpiece: ULZANA'S RAID.
