DVD Description

Angered at their mistreatment by whites, a group of renegade Apaches escape from their reservation and embark on a rampage of murder, rape and destruction. A veteran army scout, McIntosh (Bruce Lancaster), and an unseasoned young cavalry officer, DeBuin (Bruce Davison), are assigned to track down the malcontented natives. As DeBuin, McIntosh, and their party venture into the unfriendly landscape, issues start to surface about to the morality of their extermination mission. Soon the party of supposedly civil white men are fighting amongst themselves, divided about the task at hand. As much as the moralists struggle, their efforts to stop Ulzana's Raid seem fruitless. On the heels of DIRTY DOZEN and WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE, director Robert Aldrich delivers another smash film. Intelligent and edgy, ULZANA'S RAID features all of the standard Aldrich storytelling techniques: characters full of suppressed madness and prejudices, a moral dilemma, and a loaded gun with a slippery trigger waiting to be squeezed. Add the scorching heat of the desert as a backdrop and Aldrich conjures forth another masterpiece: ULZANA'S RAID.

THIS IS NOT A NICE NEIGHBOURHOOD!
Review of The Missing (Wide Screen) by alfeebee

Advantages: Brilliantly acted and spellbinding.
Disadvantages: A little too much of the 'supernatural' for a western.

...THE MISSING I had a recommendation to watch this movie by a friend who told me that it was an update of John Wayne's, classic western The Searchers (That'll Be The Day!). I appreciated the tip but I think that she was wrong in her assumption. If The Missing is based on anything that I've seen before, it might be likened to 'Ulzana's Raid'… Burt Lancaster tracking down the murderous Apache band bent on theft and torture have a similar 'feeling' to this setting, if not the same storyline, of Ron Howard's western. Forget the noble Native American. The Apaches in both these films believe that the Gods will give them great 'power' the more that they make their victims suffer before they expire. Roasting alive is seemingly a favourite method of achieving this force. WHAT'S THE STORY, THEN? Set... Read review

...of Pacino and De Niro. The non-stop action, enhanced by the incidental music, especially throughout the bank raid. I saw it at the movies, bought the VHS tape, upgraded to DVD, bought it on DVD - I guess this means I liked it! Two enthusiastic thumbs up!... Read review

Goldfinger Its The Film...
Review of Goldfinger DVD by antnelson

Advantages: He Goes To Quite A Few Places.
Disadvantages: A Little Boring In Parts.

...Now this be the most liked Bond film of all time, it went a down a treat at the cinema when it first came out in 1964, with its high-profile images of a fully-armered Aston Martin DB-5, a woman painted head to toe in gold paint, the mute Korean manservant - Oddjob, with his steel rimmed bowler, Bond's near death experience with a laser beam atop a a gold table, and the wild concept of a raid on Fort Knox. Shirley Bassey's powerful voice on the Goldfinger theme tune added a rich shimmer to this 3rd Bond film.... Read review
