of new-man-on-the-team Jamie Dow, but realised as a star vehicle for Ross Kemp as the clichéd tough-but-caring leader Sgt "Henno" Garvie. Kemp essentially plays a legitimate version of hisEastendershardman persona, Grant Mitchell, while Jamie--Billy Elliot--Draven wins a lot of hearts as the troubled but sensitive Dow. The two are the focus of this hit ITV series which, harking back to the thick-ear undercover shenanigans ofThe Professionals, echoes the macho camaraderie, soap opera character development and explosive action ofLondon's BurningandSoldier, Soldier.By TV standards the set-pieces are bold and bloody, but the stories are routine, from rescuing hostages in the feature-length opener, to tracking a war criminal in the finale. Despite being cowritten by ex-SAS man Chris Ryan, the show regularly stretches credulity, and sometimes, as when demonising anti-globalisation protestors as would-be assassins, displays a tabloid sensibility quite out of step with reality.Ultimate Forceis essentially an updatedWho Dares Wins; a far better insight into the real SAS isBravo Two Zerostarring Sean Bean, which, not coincidentally, was also directed by Tom Clegg. On the DVD:Ultimate Forceis presented with a near flawless anamorphically enhanced picture in the original TV broadcast ratio of 16:9, while for a modern action drama the sound is perfectly capable but less than spectacular stereo. Other than subtitles for hard-of-hearing the only extra is a standard 17-minute behind-the-scenes featurette shot on location during the making of series 2.--Gary S Dalkin

Episode 1: The Killing house
A bank raid goes wrong, hostages are taken, the police screw up and the SAS are called in. Two new recruits have joined red troop and after the training they have received in their own environment this is the first hot situation they have to go into. Gripping and realistic, quite gruesome in parts if this is accurate it is good.
Episode 2: Just a Target
Upset group of protestors want to make a point by assasinating a European banker so hire a sniper. Red Troop have to infiltrate the gang to recover the high powered rifle and stop any further attemps by the gang. Gritty edge of the seat stuff.
Episode 3: Natural selection
The next batch of hopefull SAS recruits are on excersise to make final selection. Unfortunately a highly trained psycho is trying to make a point by killing them. The SAS protect their own by going after the psycho. Good hunting.
Episode 4: Breakout
Eastern Europeans break into a very secure pharmacuetical company. How do the team get in to stop them releasing a deadly virus. Lots of explosions and blood. Very clever story.
Episode 5: The killing of a one eyed bookie.
Ireland had to feature at some point and when one of the troop is kidnapped whilst impersonating a politician the hunt is on to find him before he is killed. IRA against SAS.
Episode 6: Something to do with justice
Two of theunit are kicked out so go to train terrorists in Bosnia. The troupe unfortunately are sent to Bosnia to stop a well trained group of terrorists. Action involving SAS against SAS
Episode 7: Communication
Suspicious crew on a ship docked in Southampton. The troop are sent in to investigate but things goe wrong for a change and some of he team get caught in the crossfire.
Episode 8: Mad Dogs
SAS against French special forces. OOps the mistake has led to the Troop being in court to defend their actions. Does the country really need a bunch of highly trained killers on the loose to defend her.
Episode 9: Wannabes
Suicide bombers who can use sex to distract people. Nice group to try and stop but Red Troop get the job.
Episode 10: The list
A daring illegal raid on a bank vault is offered to red troupe. The target is not money but a list of terrorist targets. Sounds easy for a bunch of gun toting explosives experts but if they are caught the SAS will disown them.
Episode 11: What in the name of God...
Religios nutters led by a Gulf war vet. The buildings are rigged and the nutty girl from 2 pints of lager is in their. Even if I was in the SAS I wouldn't get involved but red troop do.
Episode 12: Dead is forever.
When your CO is taken hostage what do you do. Negotiate? I don't think so.

My Opinion -
I love it. My childhood of running round the garden pretending to be a soldier. Growing up watching the storming of the Iranian Embassy. Knowing that the SAS are the best in the World and knowing from the behind the scenes footage that SAS advisors were on hand to make it as real as they could possibly make it.
OK there are some parts which in all honesty are OTT. Ross Kemp - when you get past looking for Phill Sam and Peggy is quite good as the moody but in control Henno Garvey. He must have worked out to do some of the stuff that is in these episodes so fair play to him. Action, Moral interest, Murder, social and family problems all rolled into a great drama package. The box set is good with the extra documentry parts and behind the scenes footage but I think it was probably too early. With series 3 out and a series 4 in the pipeline is it worth waiting for them all to be in one big set? No way watch them over and over now and when these DVDs are worn out then buy the complete set when it is available. If you like action buy this.
