If you think U2's just about 'Vertigo' and 'Beautiful Day', buy this. Visually and sonically, this DVD is stunning. For a start, the stage set is overblown and ridiculous - a forty-foot lemon, a huge McDonald's-style arch, and so on - but the music is more than big enough to take it on, especially given the huge improvement in the remastered sound.
Let me take a quick tour round some of the highlights. The opener, Mofo, will blow your mind if you've not heard this sort of thing from U2 before - in fact, even if you have, the Mexico City version is arguably one of the best. A totally stripped-down Sunday Bloody Sunday solo by The Edge is just one example of the reinvention that the warhorses of the U2 setlist have undergone. 'One' is one of the best performances of that song ever, and the combination of Please followed by Streets is incredibly powerful.
OK, so everything on-screen looks completely ridiculous, but somehow the music takes over and you're not even noticing that anymore. Now onto the special features - often poor on releases of this type, but not in this case.
There are some interesting documentaries hidden beneath some fairly annoying menu screens, which make you wait for a while before you can access the next screen, but the highlight of the second DVD is undoubtedly the perfomances from Rotterdam - don't miss.
A feast for any fan of the album Pop, but the live perfomances are so much better than the album tracks that even those unsure about the album should come to love this DVD. Maybe a bit of a slow-burner: there's so much going on in the songs and on-stage that it can be a bit overwhelming at first, but give it a few listens and you'll be hooked!
